Abstract

Mood disorders are a frequent complaint experienced by women during menopause due to hormonal changes. Physical exercise is known to reduce depression, but research on menopausal women is limited. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of physical exercise on depression in menopausal women. The study design used was quasi-experimental with pre-test and post-test for 16 weeks. The measuring instrument used was a GDS (Geriatric Depression Scale). The research subjects consisted of 34 menopausal women aged 45-65 years. Subjects were divided into two groups, including the physical exercise group (2x90 minutes/week, n=17) and the control group (n=17). The results showed that physical exercise significantly decreased depression (p=0.013) in the physical exercise group compared to the control group. It concludes that regular exercise is effective for preventing and treating mood disorders that occur when menopause.

Abstract

Anxiety and depression are psychological distress that often occurs in gynecological cancer patients. However, there are few studies related to interventions to overcome these problems. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a spiritual intervention on anxiety and depression in such cancer patients. The research design was quasi-experimental, employing pretest and posttest on the intervention and the control groups. The total number of respondents was 108 patients, consisting of 54 in each group. The instrument used in the study was the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). The spiritual intervention consisted of four sessions, namely an introduction and relaxation session, a control session, an identity session, and a relationship and prayer therapy session, held over two weeks. The data analysis showed a change in the mean score of anxiety and depression in the intervention group after the spiritual intervention (p = 0.001). Also, there were differences in the mean scores of anxiety and depression between the intervention and control groups (p = 0.001). The result implies that spiritual intervention can be applied as part of holistic nursing care for cancer patients, especially gynecological ones. Abstract

Stigma is a relational and social process in which negative characteristics are associated with groups/individuals based on prejudice which leads to discriminatory behavior (identifies as being different or undesirable). Stigma plays a role in forming a bad image in mental disorders. The stigma of mental illness causes the person experiencing it to lose self-esteem, prevents them from seeking medical help, and prevents them from getting opportunities such as job opportunities and opportunities to live independently and safely. If the stigma about mental disorders is still developing among the general public and health workers, it will prevent people with mental disorders from getting help. The purpose of this community service activity through the Stigma Reduction Webinar for People with Mental Disorders is to provide education and health campaigns that can reduce stigma against people with mental disorders. Through this service activity, the community is expected to know the impact of stigma and change the negative perception of people with mental disorders.

Abstract

Background: Breast cancer survivors have an excellent prognosis and a high survival rate, thus each survivor requires self-care abilities throughout their complex therapy. The concept of self-care is not a new concept in the nursing field, but it is necessary to analyze it as there are still inconsistencies in its use and unclear definitions, especially in the context of breast cancer survivors. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe the concept of self-care among breast cancer survivors by employing the Walker and Avant’s analysis method. Methods: The Walker and Avant’s concept analysis method comprises of eight systematic steps. The literature search was conducted through electronic databases, such as ScienceDirect, MEDLINE, EBSCO, ProQuest and SAGE, with the search constraints ranging from 2003 to 2023. Results: The literature search identified 115 articles in the fields of medicine, nursing, sociology, psychology, economics, anthropology, pharmacy, computer science and midwifery. Following the analysis, 30 articles were selected for this study. The concept of self-care was defined as: 1) survivor activity; 2) survivor awareness; 3) self-management; 4) prevention of morbidity and recurrence; 5) improved health. Meanwhile, the concept’s antecedents included self-efficacy, self-care agency and social support, and the consequences included symptom control, improved coping, improved well-being, and improved quality of life. Conclusions: Understanding the attributes of self-care among breast cancer survivors along with their antecedents and consequences could facilitate its development in nursing practices. The self-care concept is utilized for self-care assessment and implementation of appropriate interventions in the context of breast cancer survivors who have completed the therapy.

Abstract

Hypertension is a significant health issue among the elderly and is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and other disorders. Factors such as unhealthy eating habits, lack of physical activity, stress, hormonal imbalance, and genetic predisposition significantly increase the risk of hypertension in the elderly. Integrated management, including regular blood pressure monitoring, appropriate pharmacological therapy, and an emphasis on healthy lifestyle changes, has proven to be effective in controlling and preventing complications of hypertension in the elderly population. The objectives of this activity are (1) to increase the knowledge and understanding of the community, especially the elderly, about hypertension and food management, and (2) to enhance the elderly's awareness of the importance of physical activity in maintaining their health. The results of the evaluation involving 20 participants showed an improvement in knowledge about hypertension, food management, and physical activity, and participants were motivated to prevent hypertension through proper food management and exercise.
