Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of acupressure and simple eucalyptus oil inhalation in reducing cold and cough severity among toddlers under five years old in Indonesia, where respiratory infections account for a significant portion of childhood mortality. Conducted using a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest approach, the research involved 33 toddlers from Jenisgelaran Village, Bareng, Jombang, randomly assigned to control, acupressure-only, and combined treatment groups. Data collected through observation sheets and the Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) classification showed significant improvements in symptom severity in the combined treatment group (P = 0.01), while One Way ANOVA results indicated no overall significant effect (P = 0.06) across groups. These findings suggest potential benefits of combined therapy but highlight the need for standardized eucalyptus oil types and clearer treatment protocols to enhance therapeutic outcomes in future studies aiming to alleviate respiratory symptoms in young children. Highlights: Quasi-experimental design with pretest-posttest approach. Significant improvement in symptom severity in combined treatment group. Need for standardized eucalyptus oil types and clear treatment protocols for optimal therapeutic outcomes. Abstract

The low level of parental visits to Posyandu in Pasuruan Regency is a concern, where the coverage of complete basic immunization has only reached 53.72% in 2023. The most visits occurred in infants aged 0-6 months, but decreased significantly after that age. The Health Belief Model (HBM) was used to understand the factors that influence participation, including perceptions of vulnerability, severity, benefits, perceived barriers, cues to action, and self-efficacy. Objective: to analyze relationships implementing HBM on parental participation in Posyandu after toddlers have completed complete basic immunization. This study is an analytical study with a cross-sectional design. A sample of 61 toddlers aged 1-5 years, the sampling technique used a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through questionnaires that had been tested for validity and reliability. Data analysis used the Spearman's rho test. The results of the analysis showed that only perceptions of benefits had a significant relationship with parental participation in Posyandu after complete basic immunization (p = 0.027; r = 0.283). Other variables such as perceived susceptibility (p = 0.198; r = 0.167), perceived severity (p = 0.849; r = -0.013), perceived barriers (p = 0.082; r = -0.243), cues to action (p = 0.062; r = 0.252), and self-efficacy (p = 0.130; r = 0.205) did not show significant relationships (p > 0.05). Perceived benefits play an important role in increasing parental participation in Posyandu after complete basic immunization. The HBM approach can strengthen these perceptions to increase visits.

Abstract

Background: Obstructed labor is a complication during childbirth that can increase maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity, making early detection crucial for prevention. However, currently, no instrument is available to predict the occurrence of obstructed labor. Objectives: This study aims to develop an effective prediction instrument for the early identification of obstructed labor, enabling timely interventions to reduce associated risks. Methods: The study employs a case-control design for the development of the instrument and a cohort design for its testing. The research is conducted in three phases: Phase I involves a literature review to identify risk factors, Phase II focuses on the initial testing of the instrument, and Phase III includes the validation of the instrument in a clinical setting. The study population consists of 360 women in labor for instrument development and 40 women for instrument testing. Bivariate analysis is conducted using chi-square tests, while multivariate analysis is performed using logistic regression, followed by ROC curve analysis to determine the optimal cutoff point. Results: The results indicate significant associations between obstructed labor and factors such as infant birth weight, maternal height, age, obesity, upper arm circumference, anemia, history of abdominal surgery, and weight gain during pregnancy. The final predictive model demonstrated an AUC of 0.908, indicating excellent predictive performance with a sensitivity of 85.7% and specificity of 80.8%. Conclusions: This study highlights the importance of early risk detection and intervention and contributes to the literature by providing an instrument capable of predicting the risk of obstructed labor.

Abstract

Background: During pregnancy, physiological hormonal changes increase inflammatory responses, particularly in gingival tissue, making gingivitis and periodontitis more likely to occur, which can lead to pregnancy complications such as premature birth and low birth weight. This risk is even higher in pregnant women with malocclusion, especially during the first, second, and third trimesters. Therefore, appropriate and continuous education is crucial for pregnant women with malocclusion to enhance awareness of oral hygiene and health, as well as early detection during pregnancy. Objective: To implement preventive educational efforts targeting the risk of gingivitis and periodontitis among pregnant women with malocclusion who visit the Sedati Sidoarjo Health Centre, regardless of whether they are undergoing orthodontic treatment or not. Method: Interactive education and question-and-answer sessions based on extraoral and intraoral photographs and oral cavity examinations were conducted on 51 pregnant women who came for check-ups at the KIA clinic. All of the pregnant women had malocclusion, and 10 of them wore braces. The examination was conducted to assess the condition of the gums, teeth, and periodontal tissues. Results: The pregnant women enthusiastically participated in the activity, becoming familiar with the terms gingivitis, periodontitis, and malocclusion, and understanding the importance of maintaining oral hygiene, especially during pregnancy. The examination results showed that dental plaque (86.27%) and red gums (54.9%) were most prevalent among women aged 20–35 years and in the second and third trimesters. Conclusion: Interactive education combined with extraoral and intraoral examinations is highly effective in improving oral health during pregnancy and serves as an early detection method for gingivitis, periodontitis, and malocclusion. Most pregnant women with malocclusion in their reproductive years experienced gingivitis, and some also had periodontitis. Highlights: Hormonal changes increase gingivitis and periodontitis risk during pregnancy. Malocclusion worsens oral health issues, especially in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters. Interactive education and examinations improve awareness and early detection. Abstract

Abstract — General Background: Emesis gravidarum is one of the most common early pregnancy symptoms, influenced by hormonal, psychosocial, nutritional, and maternal factors. Specific Background: Psychological distress, particularly anxiety, is believed to exacerbate nausea and vomiting during pregnancy, but evidence in the Indonesian context remains limited. Knowledge Gap: Previous studies have not sufficiently explored the association between maternal anxiety and the severity of emesis gravidarum in first-trimester pregnancies using validated tools. Aims: This study aimed to examine the relationship between maternal anxiety levels and the severity of emesis gravidarum. Results: An analytic survey with a cross-sectional design was conducted among 30 first-trimester pregnant women selected by quota sampling. Data were collected using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS) and PUQE-24 questionnaire. Fisher’s Exact Test revealed a significant association (p = 0.006 < α = 0.05) between maternal anxiety levels and emesis gravidarum severity. Novelty: This study provides empirical evidence on the role of psychological status, particularly anxiety, in influencing emesis gravidarum symptoms among Indonesian primigravida. Implications: The findings suggest the importance of early screening and anxiety management interventions by healthcare providers to prevent worsening conditions such as hyperemesis gravidarum. Highlights: Anxiety severity is significantly linked to emesis gravidarum levels. Primigravida mothers are more vulnerable to moderate nausea and vomiting. Early anxiety management may reduce the risk of hyperemesis gravidarum. Keywords: Emesis Gravidarum, Anxiety, DASS, PUQE-24, Pregnancy

Abstract

Hormonal changes, number of pregnancies (gravida), gestational age, education level, and the presence of malocclusionespecially if accompanied by the use of bracescan increase the risk of gingivitis and periodontitis in pregnant women. This study aims to analyze the relationship between gravida, gestational age, and education level on the incidence of gingivitis in pregnant women with malocclusion. The study involved 51 pregnant women who met the inclusion criteria and provided consent by signing an informed consent form. Interviews and oral screenings were conducted, and the data were analyzed using the Chi-squared test. The results of this study found that the number of pregnancies (gravida) had a significant relationship with the incidence of gingivitis (p = 0.024) and dental caries (p = 0.029). Gestational age showed a significant relationship with the incidence of periodontitis (p = 0.003) and dental caries (p = 0.020). Meanwhile, educational level did not show a significant relationship with gingivitis or periodontitis, but was significantly associated with dental caries (p = 0.050). It is concluded that there is a significant relationship between gravida, gestational and education level with dental caries in pregnant women with malocclusion. Gestational age is significantly associated with periodontitis, and gravida is significantly associated with gingivitis.

Abstract

General Background: Stunting remains a major public health concern, particularly in Indonesia, where nutritional deficiencies and maternal conditions contribute significantly to its prevalence. Specific Background: Maternal anemia, chronic energy deficiency, and short pregnancy spacing are identified as major maternal factors influencing childhood stunting. Knowledge Gap: However, the combined role of these maternal factors in determining stunting among toddlers is still underexplored in regional contexts. Aims: This study aims to analyze the association between maternal anemia, nutritional status, and pregnancy spacing with stunting incidence among toddlers in Jabon Community Health Center. Results: A cross-sectional design involving 96 toddlers aged 24–59 months revealed significant associations through chi-square tests (p=0.000 for all variables). Logistic regression showed maternal anemia (p=0.000; OR=244.6) and short pregnancy spacing (p=0.003; OR=17.5) as strong predictors of stunting, while nutritional status showed no significant effect (p=0.107). Novelty: The study highlights anemia during pregnancy as the most dominant determinant, with a risk 244 times higher for producing stunted children. Implications: These findings emphasize the importance of anemia prevention and reproductive health education as key interventions to reduce stunting prevalence, suggesting that early maternal care and optimal pregnancy spacing should be prioritized in public health programs. Highlights: Maternal anemia is the strongest determinant of stunting Short pregnancy spacing significantly increases stunting risk Nutritional status showed no significant multivariate effect Keywords: Maternal Anemia, Pregnancy Spacing, Nutritional Status, Toddlers, Stunting
