Abstract

Divorce causes changes in social roles and relationships both in the family and in the society. Readjustment requires greater attention and effort, especially by women, regarding the socio-economic impacts it causes. This research aims at explaing the forms of family social supports and social networks for post-divorce role readjustment. A qualitative approach was used by conducting in-depth interviews with eight deliberately selected participants who had experienced the divorce in the last one to three years and they had children. Social support from family and social networks have a significant positive impact on the post- divorce readjustment process. Key findings highlight that emotional, practical, and informational support and positive feedback play an important role in helping the individuals navigate their complex life changes after the divorce. Parents are the first parties to provide emotional support in the form of empathy, motivation, advice, and a place to share feelings as a form of self-acceptance for the children. Parents are also the source of material support to help finance living needs and child care. Support from social networks includes providing information about available resources or services and advice to overcome the post-divorce difficulties, but there is a relative lack of perceived support and positive responses. This research provides important insights with how social support can facilitate the post-divorce readjustment process and emphasizes the need to integrate the strategies for strengthening the social support into individual readjustment interventions.

Abstract

This study examines the preservation of the Marapulai Basuntiang tradition in Nagari Muara Sakai Inderapura, West Sumatra, and its adaptation to modernization challenges. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected from 25 key informants, including traditional leaders, community figures, and married couples, covering the period from 2016 to 2023. The findings indicate a significant decline in participation, from 50 cases in 2016 to only 20 cases in 2023, due to factors such as lengthy implementation processes, financial constraints, weakened traditional sanctions, and perceived incompatibility with modern lifestyles. Despite these challenges, the study identifies innovative strategies for preserving the tradition, including modifications to traditional accessories, the use of social media for promotion, and collaborations between traditional institutions and educational sectors. These adaptations demonstrate how cultural heritage can be maintained while evolving to fit contemporary societal contexts. The findings offer valuable insights for communities seeking to sustain traditional practices amid modernization, providing a model for cultural resilience and continuity.

Abstract

Married life is often characterized by various conflicts. Marital conflicts that occur in each married couple will be different and unique. One of the factors related to the dynamics of marital conflict is the socioeconomic status of the family. The study aimed to describe the forms, causes, and impacts of marital conflict in high and low social classes. Researchers used qualitative methods for data collection, namely structured and in-depth interviews, observations of informants from 10 families living in Padang City. Informants were determined intentionally (purposive sampling) based on education, occupation, income of the married couple, and assets owned. The data obtained through structured interviews are presented through frequency tables and explained in more depth based on the data and information collected through in-depth interviews and observations. The data is interpreted qualitatively by combining existing categories to create descriptions based on relevant literature studies. The results of the study identified 6 families from high social class and 4 families from low social class. Conflicts between spouses, ranging from quarrels to domestic violence, were observed across both high and low socio-economic classes. However, the nature of the conflicts differed, with high social class conflicts mainly involving psychological domestic violence, while those in the lower social class involved physical, economic, and psychological forms of violence.  The cause of marital conflict at high social classes tends to be due to differences in priorities. The wife wants the presence and attention of her husband more, while the husband prioritizes work or career achievement and hobbies as a status symbol. Conflict arises related to pressure to maintain a lifestyle according to social status. The causes of conflict at low social classes are dominated by financial pressure, division of household tasks, childcare, and home atmosphere. In general, marital conflict disrupts emotional conditions such as anxiety, stress/trauma. Physically healthy, the intensity of interaction with the partner is decreasing.

Abstract

Abstract. Remarriage represents a significant phenomenon affecting family dynamics in contemporary society, particularly given the rising divorce rates. This study aims to examine adaptation strategies employed by remarried couples in Nagari Sungai Aur, West Pasaman District, within the Mandailing cultural context. Using a qualitative methodology through in-depth interviews and observations, the research explores how couples navigate complexities such as role restructuring, effective communication, trust reconstruction, and integrating children from previous marriages. Data were collected through purposive sampling, focusing on remarried couples within the past three years who had children from previous marriages. Data analysis followed Miles and Huberman's three-stage approach: data coding, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that adaptation occurs through behavioral modifications, maintaining communication, understanding character differences, building relationships with stepchildren, and strengthening ties with the husband's extended family. Challenges encountered include economic issues and feelings of alienation due to the patrilocal system, which emphasizes the husband's extended family as the center of familial ties. This research highlights the importance of adaptive strategies in strengthening household harmony for remarried women within the Mandailing cultural context. Practical implications include guidance on improving communication, fostering positive relationships with stepchildren, and addressing cultural challenges to enhance marital resilience. Keywords: Remarriage, adaptation strategies, mandailing culture, patrilocal system. Abstrak.
