Abstract

Due to low levels of student engagement during the COVID-19 pandemic, elementary school students suffered significant learning losses, which served as the driving force behind this research. Teachers should be the key to solving problems. This research aims to measure how much influence the competence of professional elementary school teachers has on student engagement in Indonesia. This research uses a quantitative approach with a correlational design and survey method. Data collection was carried out through teacher professional competency and student involvement questionnaires, with data sources coming from elementary school teachers and students in the western, eastern, and central regions of Indonesia. Samples were taken using the cluster random sampling technique. Quantitative data analysis was used with descriptive statistical stages, correlation analysis, regression analysis, and comparative analysis. The results of the hypothesis test also show that professional competence in the aspect of understanding content and understanding the curriculum has a significant influence on student engagement, while in the aspect of understanding student character, it does not have a significant influence. These results make an important contribution to teachers' ongoing professional development. Aspects of content development and curriculum development are recommended as priorities for self-development.

This research aims to find out students’ problems in English writing. The data were taken from the writing of English Literature students of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan with samples from three classes. The types of writing were varied starting from essay, formal letter, and topic-based writing. The major finding shows that the students have problems in the subject and verb agreement where they have problems in classifying the subjects and verbs in compound and complex sentences. Besides, the structure of the sentences is sometimes incorrect, especially in forming long phrases. This research is expected to be able to make more students aware of the mistakes and give some clues for the teachers or lecturers related to some problems faced by students in composing a piece of writing.

Abstract

WhatsApp is an option for communicating in the current era, regardless people’s background. In the world of education, for instance, both students and lecturers also use this application for teaching and learning activities. Unfortunately, not many students communicate with this media properly so the messages sent to their lecturers tend to be impolite, especially when the messages are sent in English. One indicator of this is the absence of greetings in the message. None of the previous research has discussed the specific element(s) of a message that becomes the gap of this research. This research aims to find out what greetings students usually use when sending English messages to lecturers and how important greetings are in sending a text message. This quantitative research involved 60 lecturers who teach in English Department or teach English subjects throughout Indonesia who filled out questionnaires and expressed their opinions on several English text messages sent by students. The result shows that there are several types of greetings used by students, such as "Assalamualaikum", "Hello", "Good morning/Good afternoon /Good evening", and also "Excuse me...” Furthermore, 53,3% respondents agree that greetings are one of the most important aspects in sending a message politely.

Abstract

Speaking English is one of the most important skills in learning, especially as international class students. They need more effort to speak English correctly because they are required to use English in a daily basis in the learning process. However, this is the biggest challenge for them since English as a foreign language in Indonesia. While many researches mainly talk about speaking difficulty for students in general, this study aims to find out students' challenges in speaking English during class experienced by students in the international class program. In addition, because this research is a quantitative study, questionnaires were distributed to find out all the problems faced by International Program of International Relations (IPIREL) students in Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY). The results show that the challenges faced by students in speaking is the fear of making mistakes and the lack of vocabularies that limit them to produce the utterances, especially in the classroom. In facing the challenges, the students also have some strategies in handling the situation. It is expected that this research is able to make other students more aware of the possible challenges that they may face in speaking English and find some strategies to handle them.

Abstract

The use of the pronouns kami and kita in Bahasa Indonesia is an issue for most Indonesian youths nowadays. Most of them use it incorrectly. This study explores the problematic usage of the pronouns kami and kita among Millennials and Gen Z in Indonesia. The research led to understanding how these generations comprehend and differentiate these words in daily use communication. A semantic approach is used to analyze the data since the basic difference between kami and kita pronouns is in the level of meaning. Interviews with ten respondents revealed that only three correctly understood the semantic differences between kami and kita. Most respondents understand the difference pragmatically, associating kami with formal contexts and kita with informal ones. Furthermore, most of them think that the difference between the two pronouns is in the number of subjects in a conversation. This misunderstanding often leads to incorrect usage in conversations. The study highlights the need for better awareness of semantic differences to avoid miscommunication. This research is expected to increase the awareness of Indonesian youths to use both pronouns correctly to avoid misunderstandings in communication.

Abstract

The fact that the world is now borderless has increased the demand for English in society. This demand does not only apply to adults but in the Merdeka Curriculum, early childhood, elementary school students and inclusive students or students with SEN (Special Education Needs) are now also required to be able to speak English. Many researchers have discussed the various difficulties in learning English faced by adults or children, but few have discussed the difficulties experienced by SEN students, even though they have the same demands and rights as everyone else to learn English. This study aims to provide an overview regarding the challenges experienced by SEN students in learning English. Qualitative method was done by direct interviews with inclusive students and English teachers at SD N Balirejo which is one of the inclusive schools in Yogyakarta. This study proves that the use of vocabulary, pronunciation and speaking in English are some of the difficulties experienced by SEN students. In addition, students with SEN face difficulties in social interaction that makes English learning process more challenging. Therefore, an appropriate environment, methods and strategies as well as the role of teachers are needed to support English learning for inclusive students.

Abstract

Public speaking is a crucial skill in the 21st century, but numerous primary school students struggle to convey their opinions within a group environment. The main objective of the research was to determine which activities improve public speaking skills, the influence of instructors, and the factors influencing their capacity to introduce these activities at Muhammadiyah Purwodiningratan Primary School in Yogyakarta. The study employed a descriptive qualitative methodology, incorporating in-depth interviews and direct observation with the headteacher, two teacher-coaches, and four pupils, supplemented by documentary triangulation of activity records. Findings revealed that the principal activities, pildacil (children’s Islamic speech contest) and saritilawah (Qur’anic recitation and speech competition), served as primary channels for pupils to practise courage, fluency, and overall speaking proficiency. Teachers functioned as facilitators, motivators, and coaches by routinely encouraging classroom discourse, tailoring materials to individual pupil needs, and providing emotional support to alleviate nervousness and stage fright. Success was underpinned by institutional school support, active parental engagement, and pupils’ intrinsic motivation. The main impediments were insufficient practice time, disparities in the levels of preparedness among pupils, and variations in their initial public speaking skills. Research findings confirm that faith-based initiatives are a successful approach for developing public-speaking skills in primary school students. Effective time management and enhanced collaboration between teachers and parents are essential for guaranteeing the long-term success of comparable projects.

Abstract

Abstract: Elementary students still face challenges in developing problem-solving ability in English learning due to conventional teaching methods such as teacher-centered instruction and lecturing which make students passive learners. This issue requires innovative and engaging learning models that can increase student participation, motivation, and learning outcomes. This quantitative experimental study investigates the effectiveness of TGT-based peer tutoring in enhancing V grade students’ problem-solving ability in English. The study involved 50 students of Muhammadiyah Elementary School Karangploso, divided equally into an experimental class (25 students) and a control class (25 students). Data were collected using a descriptive test designed according to Polya’s problem-solving indicators and analysed through normality, homogeneity, and independent sample t-tests using SPSS 30. The results demonstrated a significant difference between the two groups, with the experimental class achieving an average post-test score of 83.40, compared to 61.00 in the control class. These findings indicate that peer tutoring based on TGT is more effective than conventional teaching methods in improving students’ problem-solving abilities. In conclusion, the TGT based Peer Tutoring model offers a strategic method for improving the quality of English instruction and strengthening problem-solving competence in an elementary school context.
