Abstract

Due to low levels of student engagement during the COVID-19 pandemic, elementary school students suffered significant learning losses, which served as the driving force behind this research. Teachers should be the key to solving problems. This research aims to measure how much influence the competence of professional elementary school teachers has on student engagement in Indonesia. This research uses a quantitative approach with a correlational design and survey method. Data collection was carried out through teacher professional competency and student involvement questionnaires, with data sources coming from elementary school teachers and students in the western, eastern, and central regions of Indonesia. Samples were taken using the cluster random sampling technique. Quantitative data analysis was used with descriptive statistical stages, correlation analysis, regression analysis, and comparative analysis. The results of the hypothesis test also show that professional competence in the aspect of understanding content and understanding the curriculum has a significant influence on student engagement, while in the aspect of understanding student character, it does not have a significant influence. These results make an important contribution to teachers' ongoing professional development. Aspects of content development and curriculum development are recommended as priorities for self-development.

They need more effort to speak English correctly because they are required to use English in a daily basis in the learning process. However, this is the biggest challenge for them since English as a foreign language in Indonesia. While many researches mainly talk about speaking difficulty for students in general, this study aims to find out students' challenges in speaking English during class experienced by students in the international class program. In addition, because this research is a quantitative study, questionnaires were distributed to find out all the problems faced by International Program of International Relations (IPIREL) students in Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY). The results show that the challenges faced by students in speaking is the fear of making mistakes and the lack of vocabularies that limit them to produce the utterances, especially in the classroom. In facing the challenges, the students also have some strategies in handling the situation. It is expected that this research is able to make other students more aware of the possible challenges that they may face in speaking English and find some strategies to handle them.

Abstract

The use of the pronouns kami and kita in Bahasa Indonesia is an issue for most Indonesian youths nowadays. Most of them use it incorrectly. This study explores the problematic usage of the pronouns kami and kita among Millennials and Gen Z in Indonesia. The research led to understanding how these generations comprehend and differentiate these words in daily use communication. A semantic approach is used to analyze the data since the basic difference between kami and kita pronouns is in the level of meaning. Interviews with ten respondents revealed that only three correctly understood the semantic differences between kami and kita. Most respondents understand the difference pragmatically, associating kami with formal contexts and kita with informal ones. Furthermore, most of them think that the difference between the two pronouns is in the number of subjects in a conversation. This misunderstanding often leads to incorrect usage in conversations. The study highlights the need for better awareness of semantic differences to avoid miscommunication. This research is expected to increase the awareness of Indonesian youths to use both pronouns correctly to avoid misunderstandings in communication.
