Abstract

Coal mining activities have become the government's effort to increase state revenue. However, the use of natural resources without paying attention to the environment can cause various negative impacts both in the short and long term. This study aims to analyze the public health impact caused by coal mining activities. The research method used was descriptive observation with the population of the entire community of Bintang Ara Village and a sample of 36 respondents using the purposive sampling technique. The results of the study show that coal mining activities cause air pollution due to coal dust which can cause respiratory disorders, as well as water pollution due to mining waste containing harmful heavy metals. Tailings or mining residues also have the potential to pollute the environment with heavy metals such as cadmium, mercury, and lead which can cause acute and chronic toxicity. To overcome these negative impacts, comprehensive environmental management efforts are needed, including research and surveys of environmental conditions, regular evaluation and monitoring and processing of mining waste using correct procedures.
