Abstract

Graphene has been attracting enormous attention in the scientific community because of its unique properties and use for various applications. Graphene has been synthesized in various ways, one of which is the graphite oxidation method to form graphene oxide (GO). Reduction of GO to reduced graphene oxide (RGO) is necessary to recover the conjugated network and electrical conductivity, and for this research, this was achieved using microwave irradiation. Microwave synthesis provides an alternative method, saving more time in the reaction process. In this research, graphene was synthesized from graphite by the modified Hummers method and microwave irradiation. This research proves that graphene can be synthesized with a high-quality structure and in a shorter amount of time using microwave irradiation to reduce GO. With longer microwave exposure, less GO is present in the sample, as indicated by the absence of an n–π* electronic transition in the absorbance graph and the absence of oxide groups in the Fourier-Transform Infra-Red spectrum. With increasing microwave power, the reduction process is short-lived, and better quality RGO is produced. This study shows that the new reduction process occurs within 20 minutes with a power of 450 and 630 watts, but at 900 watts, the reduction of GO occurs within 10 minutes, as shown by UV-Vis and FTIR spectra.

Abstract

The education process for science student teachers in Indonesia must continue, even in a pandemic situation with an unclear end. The research aims to find the most appropriate science practicum method during the Covid-19 pandemic for science student teachers. The method used in this research is mix-methods. The research design chosen by the researcher is the Pre-Experimental One-Group Pretest-Posttest Design. Participants in this study were 140 science student teachers who did distance practicum on basic biology practicum courses. Basic biology practicum is a practicum course that practices biological science, including respiration, photosynthesis, nutrient content of food, and pollutant testing. Based on gender, the participants were 62 male students and 78 female students. The value of N-Gain d > 0.58 (moderate effect) means that practicum activities can be continued as a practicum solution during the pandemic. Student activities during a practicum at home apply new adaptations different from a practicum in the laboratory. Independence in preparing materials and tools, preparing worksheets, simplifying materials, and modifying tools is a new way for students. The study concludes that a new practicum method that utilizes the environment potential is a solution in the implementation of science practicums as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic in Indonesia. The environment can be explored to find resources that can be used as practicum materials and the manufacture of basic biology practicum tools.

Abstract

Abstract

The synthesis and characterization of SrO.SiO2 were carried out. The rice hull ash was utilized as a source for SiO2. The SrO.SiO2 was prepared by sol-gel technique, and the ratios of SrO:SiO2 were      varied as 0:1, 1:0, 3:2, 2:4, and 2:7. The sol-gel was calcined at 800 oC for 4 hours. The result was    characterized using XRD and FTIR. The diffraction pattern shows that the diffraction angle was shifted, and the intensity of the main peaks was increased. This research indicated that the            crystallinity of SrO was improved at the higher SiO content. Further, a new peak was observed in the IR spectra at a wavenumber of 900 cm-1 indicating the appearance of new functional groups of the SrO.SiO2. The catalytic activity of SrO.SiO2 on transesterification reaction was optimized. The optimum condition was obtained at SrO.SiO2 of 2:7, reaction time of 30 minutes, reaction temperature of 65 oC, the amount of catalyst of 1 % w/v of reactants, and the biodiesel yield of 96.66 %.

Abstract

This study aims to develop the teaching skills of science teacher candidates by integrating Indonesian standards with the criteria of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) through innovative microteaching practices. A mixed-methods approach was used for this research, which targeted science teacher candidates enrolled in microteaching courses, partner teachers, and microteaching lecturers. A total of 20 teacher candidates from a single microteaching class were the subjects of this research. An innovation introduced in this study allowed each student to review and analyze videos of previous microteaching sessions prior to their own practice. Data was collected from the microteaching curriculum, microteaching videos, and effectiveness tests of two developed products. The instrument used was an open-ended observation sheet. Microteaching practices were found to develop the teaching skills of professional science teacher candidates in line with NGSS criteria. Partner teachers reported a variety of positive experiences related to the development of syllabi, lesson plans, teaching materials, student worksheets, and assessments. The positive practices of these partner teachers were used as material for collaboration with lecturers in microteaching courses. The findings of this research indicate that collaboration with teachers in microteaching courses to provide information and feedback to teacher candidates, from preparation and implementation to evaluation of learning, plays a significant role in developing teaching skills.

Abstract

Indicator films can be applied to food packaging to monitor the quality of food products. However, chitosan/anthocyanin films tend to have low hydrophobicity, which may compromise their performance as indicators and lead to dye migration. One approach to address this issue is by incorporating additional materials such as carnauba wax. This study investigates the effect of carnauba wax addition on the mechanical properties and water contact angle of chitosan/anthocyanin-based indicator films, as well as evaluates the performance of the resulting films in monitoring the freshness of chicken meat. Indicator films were prepared by adding carnauba wax at concentrations of 6, 9, 12, and 15% (w/w of chitosan). The results showed that the addition of carnauba wax improved the mechanical properties of the films, although the improvement was not statistically significant. The best mechanical performance was observed with the 15% wax formulation. Additionally, the water contact angle increased with higher concentrations of carnauba wax, with the highest value (71.630°) observed for the CS/ABT/CW15% film. The indicator films were applied to chicken packaging and evaluated based on color changes during storage as a measure of freshness. After 30 hours, the film color changed from dark brown to green. The color change pattern during storage was similar for films with and without carnauba wax, indicating that the addition of carnauba wax does not affect the film’s ability to monitor chicken freshness.

Abstract

Human behavior that impacts climate change is increasingly out of control, which is very worrying for the survival of future generations. The weak climate-action skills of prospective science teachers, along with their daily activities that have the potential to cause climate change, need to be addressed. This study aims to integrate community outreach into the three dimensions of the Next Generation Science Standards so that prospective science teachers are skilled at preventing climate change. This study uses a mixed-methods embedded experimental design with a quasi-experimental component. Community outreach is integrated into the three dimensions of NGSS to develop the climate action skills of prospective science teachers by learning from community habits for climate change prevention practices. The study results showed that prospective science teachers are increasingly skilled at preventing climate change by planting trees and sorting organic and inorganic waste, thereby demonstrating economic potential. Integrating community outreach into the three dimensions of NGSS is a new strategy to prepare prospective teachers who are aware of being agents of sustainable climate change prevention.
