Abstract

Grammar is one of the essential components in English that contains many elements like tenses. English tenses commonly become a problem among Indonesian students. Every English teacher, therefore, is required to provide creative and effective ways of teaching English tenses. This research aimed at investigating the benefits of English songs as teaching devices, the considerations in using English songs, and the teaching procedures. For the third variable, the researcher only focuses on the most frequently used tenses named present simple. The method employed was descriptive qualitative, and the researchers did this current study through three phases. They are data gathering, data analysis, and data presentation. This study reveals several significant findings. Firstly, English songs have many benefits called creating a positive learning environment, motivating the students, giving cultural information, and teaching linguistics knowledge. Secondly, there are at least five considerations in using English songs as teaching devices. They are the teaching topics, language level, student age, cultural issue, and song accessibility. Thirdly, there are three essential teaching procedures. They are warm-up activity, main activity, and additional activity. Overall, English songs are useful teaching devices in the EFL context, and they can effectively be used to teach language elements like tenses.

Abstract

Teaching strategy is a crucial element of teaching and learning process especially when students and teachers cannot meet directly due to the covid-19. Technology and internet access become essential to connect them, but for schools that do not have technology and internet access, it will be difficult to conduct the teaching and learning process. The condition appears in MA Al Ikhsan Beji where most of students stay in Islamic boarding school, and they are not allowed to bring their mobile phones. Therefore, this research focuses on the strategies used by the English teacher of MA Al Ikhsan Beji. This study was a descriptive quantitative research. The researchers employed interview sheet and questioner to gather the data. Then, the researchers analysed the data obtained through data coding, data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion. This study revealed there were some strategies employed by the English teacher. The teacher used planning, drafting, and writing in teaching writing, and she also employed bottom up strategy to teach reading. Meanwhile, dialogue was the strategy for teaching speaking. In short, limited technology encountered by the teacher had been overcome by implementing several teaching strategies.

Abstract

Students’ perceptions are essential elements in the EFL context. Therefore, there are many studies related to students’ voices conducted. This research objective was to investigate students’ opinions on Doodles Instagram Account as a learning medium of English vocabulary. This research was a descriptive qualitative study. The participants of this research were 27 students in the ELT Department of Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Purwokerto. After the students learned English vocabulary through several relevant posts taken from @doodles account, the team asked the students to complete a questionnaire. The questionnaire was a closed questionnaire consisting of 22 questions. The data obtained were analyzed by calculating the percentage of each item. The results revealed several essential findings. Firstly, most of the students were active users of Instagram. Secondly, the students mostly used Instagram to enrich their English vocabulary. Thirdly, the students generally responded positively to Doodle Instagram Account. Overall, the students’ voices toward @doodles account as a learning medium of English vocabulary tended to be positive.

Abstract

This study is a part of register research aimed at investigating the functions of English terms in Korean Popular Music (K-Pop). There are many English terms used in K-Pop, and those terms are assumed to have some purposes. The researcher completed this study through several phases called data gathering, data analysis, and data presentation. The present study reveals that there are at least eleven functions of English terms in K-Pop. The terms are utilized for promoting the singers’ music projects, showing self as something different from the others, communicating briefly, praising the singers’ physical appearances, appreciating the singers’ achievements, giving comment on the singers’ attitudes, commenting on the singers’ fashions, joking, giving appreciation to the music agencies, appreciating the fans, and showing hatred toward the singers.

Abstract

In the English language teaching process, every teaching phase is paramount for the achievement of its goals. At the beginning of the classes, the teachers might bring an ice breaker. Based on the previous studies, ice breaker is considered a crucial component in EFL classes. Considering the prominence of ice breakers, the researcher regards the importance of a literature study about ice breakers, especially in grammar class. English grammar is frequently considered a complicated element. Besides, nowadays, the learning process has to be conducted online. This study is mainly aimed to explain the concept of ice breakers, English grammar, and online learning, and the examples of ice breaking possibly used in online grammar classes. The method employed was the literary study conducted through several stages called collecting, reducing and presenting the data and concluding the results. This study suggests several relevant theories to the usage of ice breakers in online grammar classes. Moreover, this study proposes some ice breakers for teaching grammar. The ice breakers are jumbled sentences, correcting mistakes, English songs, storytelling activities, and English humour.

Abstract

Students commonly regard grammar as a challenging element of English. Therefore, every English teacher is always encouraged to use effective alternatives. Furthermore, the teaching and learning process that is still running online often causes many obstacles. One of the recommended teaching models for grammar class is PACE Model. This study explored the effectiveness of the PACE model to teach English grammar and students’ voices toward this model. The method employed was pre-experimental research or one group pre-test post-test design. For collecting the data, the team employed a test and a questionnaire. The data were analysed using simple statistical calculations like average and percentage. The result revealed that the PACE model is an effective way of teaching English grammar because the average score of the post-test (52.33) was higher than the pre-test (24.67). There was a significant improvement in the test result. The data from the questionnaire also showed that most of the students had positive perceptions about the usage of the PACE Model. Overall, the PACE model was an adequate model to teach English grammar online because it received positive responses from the students

Abstract

English structure is one of the principal elements considered problematic by many students. Therefore, every teacher is always encouraged to use the effective teaching ways. One of the proposed ways in teaching English grammar is using media like humour stories. As suggested teaching media, humour stories require an examination. Therefore, this research attempts at finding out the effectiveness of humour stories to teach grammar and maintaining students’ learning motivation. The method employed was quasi-experimental research. The instruments used were a test, questionnaire, and field note. The participants of this study were two classes of English Language Teaching Department. The students learnt some grammar topics such as past simple, present perfect, passive voice of past tense, passive voice of present perfect, passive voice of present simple, passive voice of present continuous, passive voice of present future, relative clause, and noun clause. The results reveal that humour is an effective teaching media for grammar. The significance of 2-tailed (0.035) was lower than 0.05. There is a significant difference between control and experimental group. Furthermore, the result of the questionnaire shows that the usage of humour positively influenced the learners’ motivation. The observation results also reveal that the teaching atmosphere in the experimental class is getting better in each meeting.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the types of morphological errors in descriptive texts and the causes of the errors. The research type was error analysis research. The techniques of collecting the data were written test and documentation. The subject of this research was the first-grade students of SMK Ma’arif NU 2 Ajibarang. The data gathered were analyzed using several relevant theories. The data analysis revealed that there were six types of morphological error called third-person singular error, article error, omission of noun plural, additional of noun plural, inflectional error, and possessive case error. Furthermore, the possible causes of the errors were incomplete of rule restriction, ignorance of the rule restriction, interlingual error, and carelessness.

Abstract

Makanan dan minuman sehat sangat dibutuhkan bagi pertumbuhan dan perkembangan anak usia 6-11 tahun. Kebiasaan jajan di pada usia anak sekolah sangat dipengaruhi oleh jenis makanan, karakteristik individu dan lingkungan. Permasalahan yang saat ini dihadapi adalah pola makanan sehat yang tidak dikenali siswa. pengetahuan anak yang dimiliki pada umumnya masih rendah, sehingga menyebabkan anak mengkonsumsi makanan dalam bentuk jajanan sembarangan. Jajanan yang dikonsumsi pada anak, seringkali tidak diperhatikan kandungan gizi dan kebersihannya. Tujuan pengabdian ini menumbuhkembangkan jiwa berwirausaha dengan pelatihan pembuatan makanan dan minuman sehat pada siswa SD. Sasaran kegiatan program kemitraan masyarakat ini adalah siswa Kelas IV Sekolah Dasar di Kecamatan Kembaran Kabupaten Banyumas. Metode yang digunakan dalam pelaksanaan kegiatan meliputi; koordinasi program, sosialisasi, penyuluhan, dan pelatihan serta evaluasi dan monitoring pelaksanaan kegiatan. Kegiatan ini telah diikuti sejumlah 30 siswa yang diawali dengan kegiatan pre test untuk mengukur pemahaman materi dan dilanjutkan penyuluhan dan praktik pembuatan makanan dan minuman sehat serta diakhiri dengan post test. Peningkatan hasil pre test dan post test menjadi tolok ukur kelancaran dan keberhasilan program dengan peningkatan 51%. Selama kegiatan berlangsung mitra sangat antusias mengikuti dan telah memiliki perubahan dengan kemampuan mempraktekkan ketrampilan membuat makanan dan minuman sehat.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to foster pupils' abilities in English pronunciation. Participants in this Classroom Action Research (CAR) were the students of sixth grade in MI Ma'arif NU Sunyalangu consisting of 20 students. Their English pronunciation abilities were still considered low because the pretest average score was only 48.86. The tools used were the test questions and the observation sheet. In order to enhance their English pronunciation skills, the researchers utilized the Phonics method. This method was chosen due to its merits in teaching English pronunciation. Two cycles of study were undertaken. The average score on the posttest for cycle 2 was 85.69, which was higher than the successful criteria of this study (65). In short, the phonics method could help pupils pronounce English more clearly, especially young learners.
