Abstract

Tes TOEFL merupakan salah satu tes yang banyak dibutuhkan untuk kegiatan-kegiatan akademik seperti syarat kelulusan, syarat mendaftar beasiswa, bahkan syarat kenaikan jabatan. Pentingnya penguasaan TOEFL membuat pelatihan TOEFL begitu diminati oleh berbagai kalangan termasuk dosen dan mahasiswa. Oleh karena itu, tim pengabdian merasa perlu untuk mengadakan pelatihan TOEFL bagi berbagai kalangan. Bekerja sama dengan Balai Latihan Kerja Komunitas (BLKK) Darussalam, tim pengabdian mengadakan pelatihan TOEFL yang bertujuan untuk meningkatkan score TOEFL para peserta yang terdiri dari mahasiswa dan dosen. Pelatihan dilakukan secara intens selama 12 kali pertemuan. Setelah pelatihan selesai, nilai TOEFL peserta mengalami kenaikan dari nilai rerata 400 menjadi 430. Tanggapan peserta mengenai rangkaian kegiatan pelatihan juga cenderung positif. Hasil angket menunjukkan bahwa masing-masing item pada angket mendapatkan persentase tertinggi pada pilihan setuju dan sangat setuju. Kesimpulannya, pelatihan membawa dampak yang positif yang dibuktikan dengan adanya kenaikan nilai TOEFL dan tanggapan yang positif dari peserta pelatihan.

Abstract

The purposes of this study were to investigate the effectiveness of a local story entitled Babad Pasirluhur for teaching past simple and students’ voices on its usage. Therefore, the method employed was quasi-experimental research, and the instruments used were a multiple-choice item test and a closed questionnaire. The result revealed that Babad Pasirluhur story was effective to teach past simple because the value of Mann Whitney test result (97.5) was lower than Mann Whitney table (324). The significance level was 0.05. Furthermore, the result of the questionnaire showed that most of the students had positive responses toward Babad Pasirluhur. Overall, a local story entitled Babad Pasirluhur was effective to teach past simple, and the students mostly gave positive responses to the story.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out students’ difficulties in learning English. The method employed was a case study. The data was collected through interviews. The participants of this study were seven Thai students of the English Language Teaching Study Program of Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Purwokerto. The results revealed that in learning listening skills, the students faced difficult accents and a lack of vocabulary. Next, in reading skill, the students encountered two types of learning challenges called lack of vocabulary and difficult to comprehend the whole text. In learning speaking skills, the students had four types of difficulties namely unconfident and nervous, lack of vocabulary, difficulty with accent, and fluency. In mastering writing, Thai students had several problems called lack of vocabulary and difficulty understanding the grammar rules. Furthermore, the pupils had certain challenges when learning subskills. The pupils encountered the difficulty of remembering and comprehending the meaning when learning new words. Secondly, the students believed that understanding English grammar was difficult when they were studying it. Finally, the students faced challenges with the complex pronunciation system, Thai accent effect, and suprasegmental feature (stress) when learning pronunciation. In short, Thai students who learned English as a foreign language in a foreign country faced several types of learning difficulties.

Abstract

The vocabulary teaching process has been discussed widely, and the studies that are concerned with the strategies for teaching English vocabulary were explored by many researchers. However, research about students’ voices is commonly neglected. This descriptive quantitative research aims to fill this gap by investigating students' perceptions of Wordshake and Shusi Spell games as tools for teaching English vocabulary. The two games were employed in Lexical Studies 1 class for seven meetings as ice-breaking activities. Then, the students (16 students) had to complete a closed questionnaire. The data were examined by finding out the percentage of every item in the questionnaire. The results showed two significant findings. Firstly, the students agreed that the games affected them positively. Secondly, the games influenced the teaching and learning process positively. In short, Wordshake and Shusi Spell got students’ positive responses.

Abstract

Comunication ability is one of the soft skills that is supposed to be mastered by youth in this modern era. This ability can be trained by doing lots of social activities at schools or community. Organisation for youth is one of the places that can be used to improve this communication ability. Communicating in English is now becoming important in all aspects, for example, education, business, health, technologies, etc. Therefore, being able to communicate in English is needed. However, many people still think that communicating in English is difficult. One of them is IPPNU Kedungbanteng members. They still found difficulties and felt unconfident to communicate in English. Therefore, storytelling training was done because this interesting method can be used to improve confidence in communication. The participants of the training were given material related to concept of storytelling and how to prepare storytelling. The result shows that the participants gave positive responses toward the training activities and storytelling

Abstract

This research is aimed to find out the English teachers’ challenges in implementing Merdeka Curriculum at vocational high schools and the solutions or ways the teachers addressed those challenges. This research used descriptive qualitative research method. The subjects of this research were two English teachers from two vocational high schools in Karanglewas District. The techniques for collecting the data of this research were interview, observation, and documentation. In analyzing the data, the researcher used three steps called data reduction, data display, and conclusions. The results of the study showed that English teachers at Karanglewas Vocational Schools have challenges in implementing Merdeka Curriculum. The challenges were categorized into two, they were internal challenges which originated from the teachers themselves, and external challenges which originated from students, government, and learning or school facilities. The internal challenges were teachers’ ability in using ICT tools, teachers’ capability in determining methods, and adjusting the time allocation and learning activities. While the external challenges were related to practical curriculum given by the government, students’ ability and skills, inadequate learning facilities and resources, and the school proximity to the railways. The results of this study also describe solutions that teachers have taken to overcome these challenges, such as learning by doing, using exciting learning method, motivating students, keeping students focused in learning, conducting listening session with an audio speaker in classroom, and providing e-books as students’ handbook.

Abstract

Nowadays, the centre of teaching learning process is the students. Their opinions or perceptions about teaching and learning process are always considered essential. This research explores the students perceptions of the strategies implemented in English Grammar class. This study employed the quantitative approach. The researchers delivered a closed questionnaire to the students to find out their perceptions. The results revealed a positive perception of the teaching strategies implemented by the lecturers in teaching English grammar. It can be seen from the results of the questionnaires that the students dominantly agreed to the questionnaires. 52.9% of the students agreed to Inductive Approach, 52.9% agreed to Text-Context, 50% of the students agreed to Interactive Activities, 52.9% strongly agreed to Games, and 47.1% agreed to Written Practice.

Abstract

This study is a part of register research aimed at investigating the functions of English terms in Korean Popular Music (K-Pop). There are many English terms used in K-Pop, and those terms are assumed to have some purposes. The researcher completed this study through several phases called data gathering, data analysis, and data presentation. The present study reveals that there are at least eleven functions of English terms in K-Pop. The terms are utilized for promoting the singers’ music projects, showing self as something different from the others, communicating briefly, praising the singers’ physical appearances, appreciating the singers’ achievements, giving comment on the singers’ attitudes, commenting on the singers’ fashions, joking, giving appreciation to the music agencies, appreciating the fans, and showing hatred toward the singers.Keywords: Register, English Terms, K-Pop, Term Functions.

Abstract

Speaking is an essential English skill, yet it can be troublesome for many learners. Every English teacher must implement teaching strategies to support the achievement of learning objectives in speaking classes. Speaking problems also appeared in MA Ma'arif NU Sains Al-Qur'an Sumbang. Therefore, the researchers conducted action research using Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) approach to boost the speaking skill of eleventh-grade students. This class was chosen because their speaking score was still low. Additionally, this investigation aims to explore students’ perceptions of CLT implemented. The action research was conducted through planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The enhancement of speaking skill was measured through pre-test and post-test by calculating the average scores. Moreover, the students’ perceptions were explored through a questionnaire, and the data were analysed by calculating the percentage of each item. The test results demonstrated a notable increase in students’ speaking ability. In cycle 1, the average scores increased from 47.67 to 85.11.  Then, in Cycle 2, students’ English-speaking skill increased from 62.73 to 85.5. Additionally, based on the survey, the majority of students admitted that CLT exercises were enjoyable and useful in improving their speaking ability and confidence. The study shows that CLT exercises are successful in enhancing students' speaking skill, and it receives positive opinions from the students. Therefore, the findings of this study can be taken into account while utilising CLT to enhance students' English-speaking ability.
