Abstract

Background: Diphtheria remains a persistent public health issue, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where vaccination coverage is often inadequate. Recent outbreaks, such as those in the 1990s, highlight the ongoing threat posed by this vaccine-preventable disease. The World Health Organization (WHO) provides data for monitoring the global trends in diphtheria cases, helping countries remain vigilant against its resurgence. Objective: This study aims to analyze the trend of diphtheria cases and incidence rates in 10 countries with the highest disease burden as a public health challenge in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMIC), with a focus on the impact of vaccination coverage. Methods: Longitudinal study was utilized in this research. G-power was performed to calculate the sample size. In accordance with the goal year that was being investigated, the research ranked the nations that were chosen into the top ten countries that had the largest number of cases of diphtheria. Our analysis was based on secondary data obtained from the WHO and included the years 2017 through 2021. In order to assess the distribution of healthcare access and vaccine coverage, we conducted a descriptive analysis of all of the data. This served the purpose of identifying significant public health concerns that contribute to diphtheria epidemics. We used the Stata 16 application to perform analysis on all of the data. Results: The majority of diphtheria cases occur in African and Asian countries, especially in areas with lower DTP-3 vaccination coverage. Yemen, Ethiopia, and Nigeria have high diphtheria rates due to disparities in access to health services and immunization programs. Countries with higher vaccination rates, such as India and Indonesia, report lower rates despite having high numbers of cases. This suggests that strong immunization programs are essential to control the disease. Conclusion: Diphtheria continues to be a significant public health challenge in LMICs, exacerbated by geographic and socioeconomic disparities in vaccination coverage. Global cooperation, including support from high-income countries, is essential to strengthen immunization programs and prevent future outbreaks. Diphtheria should be recognized as a global health threat, requiring comprehensive and coordinated efforts to achieve eradication. Keywords: Diphtheria; incidence rate; reported cases; vaccinated

Abstract

Background: Indonesia’s growing older adult population is experiencing a rising burden of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Coastal populations face unique risks, including limited health service access, dependence on fisheries-based livelihoods, and dietary patterns high in salt and low in fresh produce. These factors may heighten vulnerability to T2DM, yet remain underexplored. Purpose: This study aimed to examine determinants of T2DM among older adults living in a coastal community. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 86 older adults selected using purposive sampling between October 30 and December 14, 2024. Data were collected using demographic questionnaires, the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), and the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE). Chi-square tests assessed associations between independent variables and T2DM, and variables with p < 0.25 were entered into multivariable logistic regression to identify significant predictors. Results: Comorbidity (p < 0.001), nutritional status (p = 0.001), physical activity (p < 0.001), and depression (p < 0.001) were significantly associated with T2DM. In multivariable analysis, lower physical activity emerged as the strongest predictor (OR = 4.13, 95% CI: 1.18–14.48; Wald = 4.92; p = 0.027). Comorbidity (OR = 3.61), depression (OR = 3.64), and nutritional status (OR = 3.28) also remained significant independent factors. Conclusions: T2DM among older adults in coastal areas was more likely in those with comorbidities, depressive symptoms, altered nutritional status, and especially low physical activity. These findings highlight the need for community-based nursing interventions emphasizing physical activity promotion, nutritional counseling, and depression screening to mitigate T2DM risk in vulnerable coastal populations

The population is teenage couples who have married under the age of 18 years with a total of 39 people. The total sample in the study was 39 people. The results of the data obtained from Langkowala village, West Wawonii District, Konawe Islands are dominated by economic factors which are still low (64.11%), the low level of education of young couples which is only on the average up to middle school level (51.28%), the lack of knowledge about reproductive health for couples who marry young (71.79%), as well as a large number of sexual activities outside of marriage (58.97%). Abstract

Background: The performance of nurses tasked with caring for the elderly is greatly influenced by the quality of the services provided. Nurse performance is influenced by several factors, namely: ability, motivation, support received, job existence and nurses' organizational relationships in carrying out their duties to provide health services to patients. Method: This study employed a cross-sectional descriptive correlation design, with random sampling technique. Surveys were administered to assess the performance of nurses. The surveys included questions about the nurses' personal information, professional experience, and other factors that may affect their performance. The study was carried out at multiple healthcare facilities, specifically hospitals and health centers, with a sample size of 128 individuals. The employed analytical methods are Chi Square and multiple logistic regression. Results: There is a significant correlation between emotional intelligence and nurse performance (p=0.009), as well as between workload and nurse performance (p=0.026). Emotional intelligence is the most influential factor on nurse performance, with a statistically significant impact (p=0.027). Nevertheless, the presence of dual role conflict is not deemed to have a substantial correlation with the performance of nurses in delivering nursing services to senior patients. Conclusion: There exists a notable association between emotional intelligence and nurse performance (p=0.009), as well as between workload and nurse performance (p=0.026). Emotional intelligence has the greatest influence on nurse performance, with a statistically significant impact (p=0.027). However, the existence of dual role conflict is not considered to have a significant association with the performance of nurses in providing nursing services to elderly patients.
