Abstract

The study conducted at the Practical Language Learning Center (PLLC) aimed to compare the effectiveness of two teaching methods for TOEFL preparation: the TMIP-Based Web in Teaching TOEFL method and a conventional approach or no specific intervention. A total of 58 students participated, with 25 assigned to the control class and 33 to the experimental class. TOEFL scores served as the measure of learning outcomes. Prior to analysis, Levene's test was used to assess variance equality between groups, followed by an independent samples t-test to compare mean scores. Results revealed a significant difference in mean TOEFL scores between the control (M = 66.96) and experimental (M = 81.58) groups, indicating superior performance in the experimental group. Statistical analyses, supported by SPSS output, affirmed the positive impact of the TMIP-Based Web in Teaching TOEFL method on students' TOEFL scores. The analysis of the SPSS output reveals a significant finding, where the obtained significance value (2-tailed) of 0.000 is considerably less than the conventional threshold of 0.01. This result prompts the rejection of the null hypothesis (Ho) and the acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (H1), indicating a substantial relationship between the TMIP-Based Web in Teaching TOEFL method and students' TOEFL scores. Furthermore, this conclusion is reinforced by both manual t-test analysis and SPSS assistance, both of which corroborate a statistically significant impact of the teaching method on students' TOEFL scores.

Abstract

In this digital era, many scholars have reported the effectiveness of digital educational platforms in teaching English grammar. However, little research has utilized digital media, such as YouTube videos and the Quizizz platform, to teach TOEFL grammar. To fill this gap, this research aims to investigate the effect of and students’ perceptions of these two platform interventions on students’ grammar mastery for TOEFL. This experimental one-group pre-test-post-test design was applied to students of the Registration Certificate for Nutrition program at the Bengkulu Health Polytechnic of the Ministry of Health, consisting of 42 persons. The data of this research were the grammar tests given in the pre-test and post-test and the students’ perception questionnaire. A non-parametric Wilcoxon test using SPSS package version 16 and descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. The result indicates that students’ grammar mastery for TOEFL preparation improved after giving interventions using YouTube and Quizizz platforms. Moreover, the results show students overwhelmingly perceive YouTube videos and Quizizz quizzes as highly effective for improving their grammar mastery for TOEFL preparation. They strongly believe their understanding of grammar improves and express high motivation, confidence, engagement, and effectiveness in applying and remembering grammar concepts. In brief, this result emphasizes the efficacy of utilizing multimedia resources and interactive platforms within educational settings, particularly in teaching English grammar. It is suggested instructors are encouraged to incorporate YouTube videos and Quizizz quizzes into TOEFL preparation courses to boost grammar mastery, leveraging multimedia resources for enhanced learning outcomes in the digital era.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the extent of students' needs for the use of e-modules in English subjects at high schools. Analyzing students' needs for learning media is a process carried out to identify the needs and characteristics of individual students to develop appropriate learning programs by utilizing suitable learning media. In analyzing students' needs for learning media, it is important to consider various factors, such as the most effective and efficient type of learning media to achieve learning goals, students' interests and preferences for learning media, and students' technological abilities. This research is quantitative and was conducted in 2023. The study sample consisted of students from three high schools in West Sumatra. The research instrument was a questionnaire consisting of 42 statements to analyze students' needs, covering three main aspects: (1) Necessities: Language aspects that students must master, (2) Lacks: Language aspects that students have and have not mastered, (3) Wants: Language aspects that students want to learn. The questionnaire used a Likert scale with four response categories: very needed, needed, not needed, and very not needed. Data were analyzed using the class interval technique to categorize the results. The findings revealed that English language skills are highly needed by students, and they are eager to master them. Additionally, English learning media is considered essential by students to support their learning process. The types of learning media students desire include: (1) Electronic learning media that can improve English language skills, (2) Media that utilizes audio-visual elements, (3) Media that is flexible, accessible anytime and anywhere. These results emphasize the importance of developing learning media that aligns with students' needs and preferences to enhance the effectiveness of English learning in high schools.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of English textbooks for economics in aligning with the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework, which integrates technology, pedagogy, and content knowledge to enhance language learning. Descriptive qualitative was applied in this study. The analysis focused on four English textbooks: Career Path: Banking, Career Path: Business English, General English Material for Economic Students, and English for Islamic Banking. The evaluation revealed several limitations in these textbooks, such as inadequate alignment with economic content, lack of clear target audience and instructional objectives, insufficient technology integration, and minimal opportunities for interactive and dynamic learning experiences. These deficiencies were found to delay the development of essential language skills, including grammar, pronunciation, and communication, which are crucial for academic and professional success in the field of economics and banking. Furthermore, the analysis highlighted the absence of diverse activities that connect language skills with real-world applications, limiting the students' ability to effectively apply their knowledge in relevant scenarios. The textbooks also lacked comprehensive instructional support for listening and writing skills, critical thinking, and digital literacy, which are vital components of a modern, technology-enhanced learning environment. The study suggests that a more tailored approach, incorporating the TPACK framework, is necessary to address these gaps. By fostering interactive and immersive learning experiences, future textbooks can better meet the specific needs of economics students, promote active participation, and enhance both linguistic competence and digital literacy skills in preparation for global economic challenges.
