Thus, the data were collected from students who were studying in the semester two, four, six and eight. The design of this research was cross-sectional survey. Questionnaire was employed to gain all the data needed in this research. The data gained were analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. The result revealed that students have different dispositions towards standardized tests. The findings of the reseach show that among the three types of Tests, TOEFL PBT and iBT and IELTS, Students tend to show greater knowledge, more positive attitude and keener taking PBT TOEFL compared to the two other tests. While the growing demand of studying iBT and IELTS is increasing, students seem to still favor this kind of traditional test. The problem is even more complex because only small percentage of students show positive disposition toward PBT test, which has been now considered as an outdated test.

Abstract

Teaching practicum is one of the compulsory courses that pre-service ESL teachers have to accomplish prior to the completion of their study. Under the lens of experiential learning theory, this study aims to find out pre-service English teachers’ challenges of teaching practicum and how they overcome them. Interviews were used as instruments in this multiple case study, focusing on three pre-service English teachers who participated in the AJARMI program during the 2022–2023 academic year. The findings of this study were analyzed using thematic analysis. The PSETs faced challenges related to students' behaviour, preparation of instructional materials, and mentoring. They handled them with organizing lessons, acting as an assertive teacher, devising a backup plan, and adapting to the school system. The implications of this study suggest that teacher education programs should provide more comprehensive training on classroom management, instructional material preparation, and effective mentoring strategies to better prepare pre-service teachers for the realities of the classroom.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of English songs in enhancing students' descriptive writing skills in a senior high school in Takalar, involving 36 tenth-grade students. A pre-experimental design was utilized, incorporating pre-tests and post-tests to assess writing performance before and after the intervention. Results showed a significant improvement, with average post-test scores increasing from 63.8 to 82.6. Paired t-test analysis confirmed this enhancement, revealing a mean difference of 18 points and a t-value of 6.066 (p < 0.05). The N-Gain score of 0.46 indicates moderate overall improvement. These findings suggest that English songs serve as effective authentic materials, engaging students and improving their content organization, vocabulary usage, and grammatical accuracy, particularly in the simple present tense. This research underscores the value of using English songs as a teaching tool to enhance descriptive writing skills, offering valuable insights for educators.

Abstract

This study examines the mismatch between the English competence of SMK SMTI Makassar students and industry demands. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study involved 12th-grade PM 3 students and an experienced English teacher through interviews, questionnaires, and document analysis. The results revealed a significant gap, with the main challenges including a lack of learning motivation, limited speaking and listening skills, and weaknesses in applying English in professional environments. The current curriculum does not fully meet industry needs due to the lack of focus on English for Specific Purposes (ESP). The study recommends integrating ESP into the curriculum, enhancing teacher professional development, and increasing student engagement in activities that develop speaking and listening skills. For future research, it is suggested to explore the implementation of ESP in vocational education and the use of contextual learning methods to improve students' readiness to enter the workforce.
