Abstract

Highlights: 1. The use of re-heated cooking oil can give negative impact on health,  especially on the cardiovascular system. 2. Unlike other types of cooking oil, repeated heating of canola oil did not show significant change in aortic wall thickness. Abstract Background: Structural alteration of blood vessels such as formation of atheroma or changes in the thickness of vessel walls, are heavily involved in pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease. Several studies have shown that canola oil has a positive effect on such diseases by reducing LDL and cholesterol levels. However, there may be several negative impacts on reheating canola oil upon administration, similar to other oils. Although canola oil can improve lipid profiles, studies related to how canola oil alters the structure of blood vessels are limited. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of heated canola oil on intimal-to-medial thickness (IMT) of Thoracic aorta in high-fat diet rats. Material and Method: A total of 27 rats were divided into 3 groups, the K+, P1, and P2. Rats among the three groups were given a high-fat diet for 14 days, accompanied by consumption of canola oil without heating in the P1, and with repeated heating in the P2. Thoracic aorta was taken on the 15th day and then processed into histological preparations. IMT was measured using CellSens software on a microscope with a magnification of 400. The difference between groups was tested using the one-way ANOVA test on SPSS. Result: The mean and standard deviations of each group in a row were K+ (134.96 and 21.27) P1(132.04 and 27.30) and P2 (152.05 and 31.75). There was no significant difference in IMT between groups (p >0.05). However, the P2 group showed the highest mean of IMT. Conclusion: The consumption of canola oil with or without repeated heating did not result in the changes of the IMT in rats fed with a high-fat diet.

Abstract

Introduction: It is necessary to develop alternative antidiabetic therapies that are safer and more affordable to overcome the high prevalence of diabetes mellitus in Indonesia. Ajwa dates (Phoenix dactylifera) have a high flavonoid content; hence, this study aimed to investigate their effect on streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus mice by examining the number of beta cells and the islets of Langerhans. Methods: Twenty-five mice were divided into five groups: a negative control group (K1), a positive control group (K2), and three treatment groups (P1, P2, and P3). The K2, P1, P2, and P3 groups were induced by 100 mg/kg bw of streptozotocin. Additionally, the P1, P2, and P3 groups received oral treatment using ajwa date methanol extract at different doses of 3, 5, and 7 g/kg bw, respectively. The treatment was administered daily for four weeks. The initial analysis included the homogeneity test and the Shapiro-Wilk test. As the data were non-normally distributed, the analysis proceeded with the Kruskal-Wallis test (p<0.05). Results: The comparative analysis revealed significant differences in the number of beta cells among the groups, with a notable decrease observed in the K2 group and an increase in each treatment group. The measurement of the islets of Langerhans exhibited significant differences among the groups, with p=0.001.  Conclusion: The administration of ajwa date methanol extract can affect the number of beta cells and the islets of Langerhans in mice with diabetes mellitus.   Highlights: 1. This original study examined the antioxidant compounds derived from naturally sourced ajwa date (Phoenix dactylifera) extract. 2. Ajwa date extract has the potential to protect against histological damage, specifically to beta cells and pancreatic islets, in mice induced by streptozotocin.

Abstract

Background: Early recognition of phallic size abnormalities is essential to identify underlying endocrine and genetic disorders. Parents are concerned regarding their son’s penis length, especially obese and short-stature boys. This study aimed to investigate the factors of penile length in prepubertal boys aged 9-11 in Surabaya. Methods: A cross-sectional analytic observational study was conducted between October and November 2021 during the community services program of the Andrology Study Program, Universitas Airlangga. One hundred forty-eight healthy boys aged 9-11 years were enrolled in this study. Penile parameters and anthropometric measures were recorded. Data were analyzed with Spearman Rho’s formula to correlate the variables studied. Results: The average penile lengths and penile circumference of the penis were 6.3±1.4 and 5.2±1.0 cm, respectively. This study found two boys with micropenis (1.35%) with normal and overweight body mass index (BMI). The penile length was positively correlated with height but not with BMI.Conclusion: Androgen and growth hormones significantly influence penile length. Children with abnormal BMI tend to have smaller penile sizes, associated with increasing androgen aromatization.

The widespread incidence of DM leads to costly treatments and often results in undesirable side effects. Methanol extract of Ajwa date fruit can effectively lower blood glucose levels in diabetic mice at specific optimal doses.   Abstract Introduction: High diabetes mellitus (DM) cases result in costly medical expenses. Ajwa date fruit contains triterpenoids, carbohydrates, and flavonoids believed to lower blood glucose, which requires research validation using methanol extract on streptozotocin (STZ)-induced mice. This study aimed to determine the effect of methanol extract of Ajwa dates with several dose levels, namely 3 g/WB, 5 g/WB, and 7 g/WB, given orally to mice induced by STZ. Methods: This study utilized a randomized pre- and post-test control group design to assess Ajwa date fruit methanol extract effects on blood glucose in Swiss-Webster mice (Mus musculus). The mice were divided into four groups: Group K (6 mice without date extract intervention), P1 (6 mice with 3 g/WB/day oral dose date extract intervention), P2 (7 mice with 5 g/WB/day oral dose date extract intervention), and P3 (7 mice with 7 g/WB/day oral dose date extract intervention) and were induced with 100 mg/WB streptozotocin. Administered daily for three weeks, Ajwa dates fruit extract showed varying impacts. Weekly blood glucose measurements and analysis of variance (ANOVA) in the International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 27.0 disclosed significant group differences, with a p<0.05 considered statistically significant. Results: Post-test blood glucose measurements in the third week showed a significant difference (p=0.017), with an optimal reduction in P3 (7 mice with 7 g/WB/day oral dose date extract intervention). Conclusion: In the third week, Ajwa dates fruit extract, at an optimal 7 g/WB dose, effectively reduced blood glucose levels via flavonoid hypoglycemic mechanisms.

Abstract

The aging process can be slowed by reducing the calorie intake consumed by the body by calorie restriction or fasting. This study aimed to analyze the effect of calorie restriction on adipose tissue in mice. The experimental research design uses 12 months old Rattus Novergicus Strain Wistar, weighing 250–300 grams. The intervention was carried out for 14 days, then the average weight of subcutaneous and visceral fat was measured using Kruskal Wallis analysis and ANOVA. Based on the four treatment groups, the mice fasting and given a high-calorie diet (group 4) had the highest average fat weight value of 4.02 grams in the subcutaneous and 3.55 grams in the visceral area. Meanwhile, in group 1, mice that were not fasting and did not get a high-calorie diet had the lowest average fat weight values, namely 2.14 grams in the subcutaneous area and 2.72 grams in the visceral area. Based on the test results, it was found that there was no difference between subcutaneous (p=0.121) and visceral (p=0.443) fat tissue in all groups. Calorie restriction is beneficial for delaying aging and increasing mammal life span, but intermittent calorie restriction does not affect adipose tissue.
