Abstract

Family motivation is an important factor influencing independence in elderly care, especially among those with non-communicable diseases (NCDs). This study aimed to analyze the relationship between family motivation and independence in caring for elderly NCD patients. A cross-sectional study was conducted in March 2025 at the Tolangohula Health Center, Gorontalo Regency, Indonesia. A total of 89 families caring for elderly NCD patients were recruited using total sampling. Data were collected through structured questionnaires covering demographics, family motivation, and family independence. Validity and reliability tests confirmed that all instruments demonstrated strong internal consistency and were suitable for use in the study. Data were analyzed using the Chi-Square test with a significance level of p < 0.05. The results showed that most families had strong motivation (60.7%) and high independence (Level IV, 60.7%). Families with strong motivation predominantly achieved Level IV independence (85.1%), while those with moderate motivation tended to fall within Levels III and II. The Chi-Square analysis revealed a significant relationship between family motivation and family independence (p < 0.001). These findings indicate that stronger family motivation is significantly associated with higher independence in elderly NCD care. Strengthening family education and empowerment programs within community nursing services is recommended to enhance caregiving capacity and improve health outcomes among elderly individuals with chronic diseases.

Abstract

Hypertension is a health problem that often occurs in the elderly and is at risk of causing various complications if not controlled properly. In addition to pharmacological therapy, non-pharmacological interventions that are safe and easy to apply are needed, one of which is through the use of herbal ingredients. This study aims to determine the effect of giving turmeric juice drink on reducing blood pressure in elderly people with hypertension in East Pentadio Village, Telaga Biru District. This study uses a pre-experimental design with a one group pretest–posttest approach. The study sample was elderly people with hypertension who were selected by total sampling technique. The intervention was in the form of giving 150 ml of turmeric juice drink once a day for seven days. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure measurements were carried out before and after the intervention, then analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. The results showed a decrease in the mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure after the administration of turmeric juice drink, with a p value of < 0.05 which showed a significant effect. It can be concluded that turmeric juice drink has an effect on reducing blood pressure in the elderly with hypertension and can be used as an alternative non-pharmacological therapy in controlling hypertension in the elderly.

Abstract

Background: Non-Communicable Diseases are a major health concern among the elderly, especially in developing regions such as Gorontalo, Indonesia. Early detection and continuous monitoring are often limited due to low health literacy, inadequate family involvement, and limited access to healthcare services. To address these challenges, the development of a Family Centered Nursing based digital system is proposed as an innovative approach to empower families in managing elderly health. This system aims to integrate digital health monitoring, family education, and early warning features to support preventive care and reduce complications among the elderly. Methods: A descriptive quantitative design was used, involving 125 elderly respondents and their families selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire on non-communicable disease status and components of Family Centered Care, then analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: The study findings indicate a high proportion of participants who screened positive for NCD indicators based on the early-detection checklist, with 114 of 125 (91.2%) classified as NCD-positive. Regarding Family-Centered Nursing (FCN), most families demonstrated low involvement, with 101 (80.8%) categorized as low and 24 (19.2%) categorized as high. These results suggest that family participation in older adults’ health monitoring and early detection remains limited, highlighting the need to strengthen family engagement and awareness to support preventive health behaviors and improve well-being and quality of life. Conclusion: This study highlights the importance of developing family-based digital systems to improve family involvement, health literacy, and disease prevention among older adults. The integration of digital tools such as health apps for early detection of NCDs can strengthen the role of families in supporting early detection, prevention, and management of noncommunicable diseases in older adults. By empowering families through accessible technology and tailored health information, this system can encourage continuous monitoring, timely intervention, and adherence to preventive practices.

HIV is still a major health problem, due to its increasing prevalence. To prevent it, many things can be done, one of which is the use of condoms. However, often the use of condoms is something that is often neglected so condoms are often inconsistent. The results of the study show that there is a significant relationship between marital status and the consistency of condom use. Married respondents tend to consistently use condoms. This is because married couples with status as PLWHA will pay more attention to safety in intercourse. After all, they realize that having intercourse without using a condom will worsen the partner's health condition. the significant relationship between marital status and consistency condoms
