Abstract

Scattergories game is a version of the category game that promotes broad word acquisition. This research aims to prove whether the use of the Scattergories game can develop vocabulary mastery of the seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Parigi. This research used a quasi-experimental design involving two groups: experimental and control groups. The population consisted of five seventh-grade classes. The test was administered twice as a pre-test and post-test to assess students’ vocabulary mastery before and after the treatment. Because the data were not normally distributed, the data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test through SPSS version 24. This finding showed a difference in mean scores post-test of the control and experimental groups, where the mean scores of the control group were 78 and the experimental group were 85. The Mann-Whitney test showed that there was a significant increase in the experimental classes (Z = -1.975, p = 0.048). This result suggests that the Scattergories game effectively enhances vocabulary mastery of the seventh-grade students, making the learning process more engaging and impactful.

Abstract

Self-confidence plays a crucial role in second language learning, particularly in enhancing speaking ability. In many senior high schools in Indonesia, English is taught as a foreign language (EFL), and students often struggle with speaking due to low self-confidence. This study investigates the correlation between self-confidence and speaking ability among eleventh grade students at MA Nurul Muttahidah Pinotu. Employing a quantitative research approach with a correlational design, the study involved 25 students as the total sample. The instruments used were a self-confidence questionnaire consisting of 20 items based on a Likert scale and a speaking test assessing five aspects: pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, fluency, and comprehension. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 24, including normality and linearity tests, followed by Pearson Product Moment correlation analysis. The results revealed a statistically significant positive correlation (r = 0.505, p = 0.010) between students’ self-confidence and their speaking ability. This finding suggests that the more confident students are, the better their speaking performance. However, the small sample size is a limitation of this study, and further research with larger samples is recommended. These results highlight the importance of fostering students’ self-confidence to improve speaking skills in EFL contexts, especially in underrepresented educational settings such as senior high schools.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of Kaili folktales in enhancing students’ reading comprehension at SMPN 19 Palu. The research was motivated by students' difficulties in understanding narrative texts, reflecting low reading comprehension levels. A quasi-experimental design was employed, involving 43 eighth-grade students divided into an experimental group (n = 23) and a control group (n = 20). The experimental group was taught using Kaili folktales, while the control group used general folktales. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests consisting of multiple-choice and essay questions. The results revealed that the experimental group achieved a higher average post-test score (71.04) compared to the control group (61.35). A Mann-Whitney test using SPSS 26 yielded a Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.001, indicating a significant difference between the groups. The findings suggest that incorporating Kaili folktales into English instruction effectively enhances students’ reading comprehension.

The researcher used purposive sampling approaches to get the sample. Using a quasi-experimental design with 72 participants divided equally into experimental and control group. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test on recount texts. The pre-test measured students' prior knowledge, where as the post-test measured students' improvement in reading comprehension using the PQRST method following the treatment.  The results show that the experimental group improves significantly in reading comprehension, with the mean score rising from 59.64 in the pre-test to 87.28 in the post-test. In comparison, the control group showed a modest increase, with mean scores increasing from 65.19 to 75.83. Statistical analyses confirmed the PQRST method that the improvement in the experimental group was statistically significant (p 0.05). The findings show that using the PQRST method successfully improves students' conceptual comprehension and promotes more fair learning outcomes. As a result, it is recommended that the PQRST method be used more widely to teach reading comprehension in senior high schools.
