Abstract

This research endeavors to explore the efficacy of online English learning at SMA Negeri 3 Palu. Its primary objective was to contribute to the ongoing discussion in this field by (1) investigating the effectiveness of online English language learning at SMAN 3 Palu and (2) identifying factors contributing to the challenges faced by both teachers and students in the context of online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.. Employing a qualitative approach with a case study design, this study involved five English teachers and ten representatives from SMAN 3 students, with two students selected from each class taught by the teachers through purposive sampling. Data collection involved in-depth individual interviews with the informants. Thematic analysis techniques were applied, involving four stages: transcription, coding, categorization, and drawing conclusions from the coded data. The findings revealed that online English learning was ineffective for students at SMAN 3 Palu due to issues such as internet connectivity, the availability of students' smartphones, and the fact that the majority of students reside in remote areas of Sigi regency, which posed challenges for implementing online English learning.

Abstract

Certain English sounds are absent from Indonesian, making pronating English diphthongs challenging for certain students. It is challenging for students to pronounce English diphthongs correctly due to various internal and external factors, including their ignorance of when to pronounce them based on their type and position. The researchers attempt to examine how difficult it is for the students and how they perceive English diphthongs based on the issue they are facing. This study's objectives are the most challenging diphthongs pronounced by students, the most difficult diphthong position, and the degree to which students struggle with pronouncing English diphthong sounds. The design of this study is quantitative and descriptive. Forty-two students comprise the study's sample, and their answers to an oral exam and questionnaire are used to gather data. The researchers found 97 errors in the closing type and 191 in the centring type of diphthongs uttered by the students. The most challenging position of diphthongs in their pronunciation is the centering position (eə, ɪə, ʊə). In addition, five factors are becoming the reason for students' difficulty in pronouncing English diphthong sounds. They are (1) the students have less confidence while pronouncing words, (2) each student has different and limited skills, (3) the lack of motivation from the students causes difficulties in the teaching and learning process, (4) the family environment is very influential in the language development of the students, and (5) the social environment is also one of the influences in the language development of the students. The implication of this study can be in the field of linguistics and education, for example, phonological theories and pedagogical strategies.

The results showed a moderate correlation between the habit in watching English movies and students' vocabulary mastery. It can be proven by the sig value obtained (2-tailed) 0.000, where this value is smaller than 0.05 so a correlation value of 0.532 is obtained. This shows that the habit of watching English movies positively impacts students' vocabulary mastery. It implies that students can implement the habit of watching English movies to improve their vocabulary mastery, the more often students watch English movies; the more students' vocabulary mastery will increase. Abstract

This study aims to find out whether the Audio-lingual method is effective in improving students' pronunciation, particularly in word stress, among tenth-grade students of SMA Bala Keselamatan Palu. The research employed a quasi-experimental design involving 54 students, divided into an experimental group (n=25) and a control group (n=29) through total sampling technique. The experimental group was taught using the audio-lingual method, while the control group followed conventional methods. Data were collected using pre-tests and post-tests, and analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test. The results showed that the experimental group achieved a higher mean post-test score (75.44) compared to the control group (61.69). Statistical analysis using SPSS version 26 showed a significance value (Asymp. Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.000, which is less than 0.05, indicating a statistically significant difference between the two groups. These results indicate that the Audio-Lingual Method is effective in improving students' pronunciation, specifically in mastering word stress in English.
