Abstract

Power transformers face significant aging issues, which threatens their reliability and service life. This research aims to develop an accurate method for predicting the remaining lifespan of transformers. Current studies highlight the inadequacy of existing approaches in determining transformer lifespan, which is affecred by the degradation of paper insulation through furan compounds and hotspot temperatures. This method adheres to the CIGRE D1 738 (2018) standard, which converts furan concentration into Degree of Polymerization (DPest) as an indicator of paper insulation condition. The methodology involves analyzing oil test data and operational temperature to estimate the remaining life of the transformer. This research not only aims to improve the accuracy of paper insulation assessments but also integrates sustainability principles. The goal is to optimize the use of existing transformers, reduce premature replacements, and conserve material and energy resources. By minimizing unexpected failures, this research contributes to reducing industrial waste and environmental impact. Furthermore, this approach aligns with practices that support economic and social sustainability. Extending the lifespan of critical devices can lower maintenance costs while ensuring a reliable and sustainable energy supply. The proposed method provides a comprehensive framework for predicting transformers longevity.

Abstract

Generator sets (gensets) are important tools to be available in public places as a backup source of electrical power, if there is a power outage from the main electrical source. In this study, an evaluation analysis of the generator capacity was carried out in the West Kalimantan secretariat building on April 2023. This building has a total load of 677 kW supplied by PLN medium voltage 20 kV and lowered by a 630 kVA step-down transformer. Current observations were made during Off Peak Load Time at 13.00-15.00 and Peak Load Time at 17.00-19.00. From this experiment, it can be concluded that in April 2023 the highest peak load usage was 568.67 kW or 710.83 kVA. After the calculations have been done, the generator power capacity in the building must be 651.61 kW, while the generators used were two units with a power capacity of 1280 kW. Thus, the generator has met the electrical energy needs of the building. The efficiency of the generator when the genset works for 60 minutes in the building is still relatively low, which is 26.25%. The ACB safety rating used on the outgoing genset to the Low Voltage Main Distribution Panel (LVMDP) has a rating of 2000 A for one genset unit and 4000 A for two synchronous genset units, which is in accordance with the calculation of the safety capability value from PUIL 2011 reference.

Abstract

Smallholder goat farmers in Jabung Village, Malang Regency, face significant challenges related to manual milking, including prolonged labor time and limited access to appropriate technologies. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a portable, battery-powered milking device in enhancing labor efficiency, technical knowledge, and economic outcomes for these farmers. Using a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, the research involved 50 farmers through a baseline survey, co-design process, a six-hour training session, and follow-up evaluation. The results showed that the device reduced the average milking time for five goats from 64 ± 4 minutes to 55 ± 3 minutes, indicating a 14% improvement. Farmers’ technical knowledge also increased significantly, from 42% to 85% after training. User satisfaction was high, averaging 4.2 out of 5, with women reporting greater ergonomic benefits. Economically, the device demonstrated an eight-month payback period based on a milk price of 12,000 Indonesian Rupiah per liter. Furthermore, 80% of farmers were able to operate the device independently after training. These findings suggest that the device holds strong potential to improve smallholder productivity and resilience, contributing to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2 and 7. However, limitations include the small sample size and the absence of data on milk quality, indicating the need for broader, long-term research.

Abstract

Abstract

This study investigated the implementation of a Battery Management System (BMS) as a protective and performance-enhancing component in a small-scale hybrid solar power plant storage system rated at 10 × 100 Wp. Battery degradation, voltage imbalance, and excessive discharge currents are persistent challenges in off-grid and hybrid photovoltaic systems, particularly in rural electrification applications. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effectiveness of an active cell balancing–based BMS in improving battery voltage stability, regulating discharge current, and extending battery life cycles. The research employed an experimental method by comparing system performance before and after BMS installation under identical charging and discharging conditions. Experimental results showed that prior to BMS installation, charging voltages among four VRLA batteries were unbalanced, ranging from 13.70 V to 13.80 V, and discharge currents reached up to 50.3 A. After BMS implementation, charging voltages became uniform at approximately 13.44 V, while discharge currents were limited to a maximum of 29.9 A. Furthermore, the SOC threshold was regulated from 100% to 90%, and discharge duration increased from 1.5 hours to 2 hours. Based on battery datasheet analysis, the estimated battery life cycle increased from a maximum of 372 cycles to 572 cycles. These findings indicate that the integration of a BMS with active cell balancing significantly enhances operational stability, thermal safety, and battery longevity. The results imply that BMS adoption is essential for improving reliability and sustainability of small-scale hybrid solar energy systems.
