Abstract

Abstract. This article aims to describe the economy of oil palm smallholders in post-conflict Aceh. The data for this study were gathered through observation, interviews, and a review of the relevant literature. This study found that oil palm plantations were one of the industries that helped the people of North Aceh get back on their feet economically after the conflict. The peaceful conditions in post-conflict Aceh propelled the former GAM combatants to plunge into the oil palm plantation sector because the potential for land was quite wide. The success of the oil palm plantation activities by former GAM combatants encouraged the community to participate in planting oil palm so that the area of oil palm plantations continued to increase in North Aceh, and then the community's economy also increased. These conditions strengthened peace because GAM combatants successfully switched from conflict-related activities to economic ones.

Abstract

The armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which erupted in early 2022, has evolved into a global crisis—triggering food and energy shortages and threatening international geopolitical stability. This far-reaching turmoil has demanded diplomatic engagement from peace-committed nations, including Indonesia. This study aims to examine the role and strategies undertaken by the Indonesian government in responding to the conflict, as well as to uncover any underlying national interests behind its peace initiatives. Using a comprehensive literature review, the findings reveal that Indonesia positioned itself as a dialogue initiator and actively pursued bilateral and multilateral communications with the parties involved. While the diplomacy is officially framed as neutral and aligned with Indonesia’s constitutional mandate for peace, deeper analysis suggests pragmatic motives—such as safeguarding economic stability and bolstering Indonesia’s image as a credible global actor—also influence the peace mission.

Abstract

Abstract In Aceh, Indonesia, Governor's Circular SE-11286 regulates coffee shop operating hours aiming to strengthen Islamic Sharia compliance. This policy sparks tension with the crucial role these businesses play in local commerce, employment, and community engagement across key hub (e.g., Langsa, Lhokseumawe) and destination (e.g., Banda Aceh) cities. This article investigates the balance between faith-based regulation and economic vitality. Employing a public policy research approach with interpretive analysis, the study evaluates SE-11286 through the Maqasid al-Shariah framework, conceptualized systemically, examining policy articulation, social construction, and socio-economic impacts. Findings indicate significant challenges in aligning the regulation with holistic Maqasid principles. The policy's focus potentially prioritizes aspects of Hifz al-Din while disproportionately compromising Hifz al-Mal negatively impacting livelihoods and the function of coffee shops as vital economic and social hubs. The study concludes that effective Sharia-informed governance requires a comprehensive Maqasid application, balancing diverse objectives and necessitating thorough socio-economic impact assessments prior to implementation. This research provides critical implications for formulating ethically grounded and economically sustainable regulations within contemporary Islamic contexts.
