Abstract

General Background: Punctuality is a vital aspect of student discipline, directly influencing academic engagement and school climate.Specific Background: However, recurring tardiness remains a persistent behavioral issue among high school students. Knowledge Gap: Limited empirical studies have evaluated structured group counseling interventions, particularly behavioral contract techniques, in addressing this issue. Aim: This study aims to assess the effectiveness of group guidance services based on behavioral contract techniques in reducing tardiness among students at SMA Negeri 1 Bangun Purba. Method: Utilizing a quantitative approach with a one-group pretest-posttest pre-experimental design, eight purposively sampled students from a population of 348 were assessed using a validated and reliable tardiness questionnaire. Results: Findings revealed a significant decrease in average tardiness scores from 89.9 (pretest) to 35 (posttest), supported by the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test with a significance value of 0.012 (p < 0.05). Novelty: This study provides concrete evidence on the application of behavioral contracts within a group guidance framework as an effective method for behavior modification in school settings. Implications: The results suggest that integrating behavioral contract strategies into counseling services can enhance students’ time discipline and foster a more conducive school environment. Highlights: Measures the impact of behavioral contracts on student punctuality. Demonstrates statistically significant reduction in tardiness. Supports counseling interventions for school discipline enhancement. Keywords: Behavioral Contract, Group Guidance, Student Tardiness, Discipline Improvement, Pre-Experimental Design

Abstract

Background (General): Adolescents often experience intense self-conscious emotions such as shame, guilt, and anxiety, which may hinder their confidence and social interaction. Background (Specific): At Madrasah Aliyah Muallimin UNIVA Medan, many students were found to struggle with excessive self-conscious emotions, leading to avoidance behaviors and decreased academic engagement. Knowledge Gap: While guided imagery has been studied in reducing anxiety and stress, its specific effect on overly self-conscious emotions among Islamic high school students remains underexplored. Aim: This study investigates the effectiveness of group counseling with guided imagery in reducing excessive self-conscious emotions in MA students. Results: Using a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control design with 16 purposively sampled students, findings revealed a significant reduction in self-conscious emotions in the experimental group (M pretest = 60.38; M posttest = 56.00; p < 0.05), supported by paired sample t-test results. Novelty: The study is among the first to apply guided imagery in group counseling within an Islamic educational setting, focusing specifically on excessive self-conscious emotions. Implications: The results highlight guided imagery as a practical and culturally adaptable intervention for school counseling, with potential to enhance students’ self-confidence, emotional regulation, and overall academic performance.Highlight : Group counseling with guided imagery effectively reduces excessive self-conscious emotions. Students gain relaxation and positive emotional control through visualization. The method improves confidence and supports emotional well-being Keywords : Counseling, Guided Imagery, Overly Self-Conscious Emotions, Group Counseling, Students

Abstract

General Background: The widespread use of smartphones has created new behavioral challenges among students, one of which is phubbing, or ignoring others during social interactions due to phone use. Specific Background: Previous studies showed that group counseling helps students address maladaptive behaviors, yet limited research has applied the behavior contract technique in the context of Islamic junior high schools. Knowledge Gap: Few studies have specifically tested the effectiveness of behavior contracts in reducing phubbing at MTs levels. Aims: This study aimed to examine how group counseling with behavior contracts reduces phubbing among eighth-grade students. Results: Using a quasi-experimental design with 16 participants, findings revealed a significant decrease in phubbing scores in the experimental group (from high to low category), compared to the control group. Statistical analysis confirmed meaningful differences with sig < 0.05. Novelty: The research provides new evidence of behavior contract effectiveness in addressing phubbing within the MTs school environment. Implications: The findings suggest that school counselors can adopt behavior contracts as a practical strategy to foster healthier digital behavior and improve face-to-face communication among students. Highlight Students’ phubbing behavior decreased significantly after behavior contract counseling. Group counseling sessions provided structured peer interaction and support. Behavior contracts encouraged commitment and self-control in phone use. Keyword Group Counseling, Phubbing Behavior, Behavior Contract, Student Discipline, Digital Habits
