Abstract

The discussion chapter holds a paramount position in a thesis, being regarded as the most crucial and challenging part to compose, particularly for university students. The present genre investigation highlighted the focus on language use and communicative practices. This research seeks to investigate the rhetorical organization, moves, and steps, employed by Indonesian postgraduates while writing the discussion chapter of their theses within the field of Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). We examined five theses from postgraduate students whose data were obtained from the university repository. Data were analyzed with the framework proposed by Chen and Kuo (2012). The overall word count is 9204 words. From the analysis conducted, it was found that Move 2 Step 1: Reporting major findings (41.4%), Move 4 Step 2: comparing the results with literature (21.9%), and Move 4 Step 3: accounting for results (20.7%) were highly used in the data. However, two steps were least used in the data; namely, Move 3 Step 1: making conclusions of results and Move 6 Step 2: indicating the significance of the study. Our findings provide insights into how postgraduates structure their arguments, present findings, and interact with existing literature.

Abstract

Discourse Marker (DM) So is essential for participants to understand an ongoing dialogue. Despite the important role, the lack of effort discloses the academic context of spoken monologic discourse. This research investigated the effects and functions of DM So in monologic data of spoken corpus of academic lectures. The MICASE (Michigan Corpus of Academic Spoken English) data was annotated with the help of the MonoConc corpus program. Selected frameworks were used to examine the data to show their original functionality. The consistency was achieved through coding agreement between coders .82, showing the reliability of its findings. The results presented seven functions of DM So in the lecture corpus, namely topic developer (TD), point sequencer (PS), main idea unit (MIU), exemplification, inferential conclusion, and rewording. These included three newly established functions because they indicated different meanings from those in frameworks, namely PS, exemplification, and rewording. Therefore, this present research suggested that the use of DM So is considered to have a key role in signaling the lectures’ macrostructure to facilitate the student-listeners to process the given information.

Abstract

This study examines the challenges and adaptations encountered by pre-service English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers in implementing the Merdeka Curriculum. A qualitative case study approach was used to collect data from 89 final-year english education students at the state islamic university of north Sumatra who had completed teaching internships. The aim of the study was to explore the difficulties faced by these pre-service teachers in applying the new curriculum and the adaptation strategies they used to overcome them. The findings indicate that, although the pre-service teachers demonstrated a strong understanding of the curriculum's principles especially in integrating the Pancasila Student Profile into their teaching they faced significant challenges. These challenges included difficulties in designing lesson plans, implementing student-centered teaching methods, and conducting authentic assessments. Support from schools, including adequate facilities, guidance from senior teachers, and professional development, was crucial in helping them address these challenges. Additionally, adaptation strategies such as attending workshops, collaborating with peers, and independently seeking additional resources proved effective in enhancing their capacity to implement the curriculum. This study emphasizes the importance of ongoing collaboration among educational institutions, schools, and pre-service teachers. Continuous training, mentoring, and resource support are essential to ensure the successful implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum and better prepare future educators for curriculum innovations.

Abstract

Incorporating cultural elements into teaching is essential for Indonesian educators. However, a key issue currently observed is the lack of awareness among English teachers regarding the integration of cultural learning into English instruction. This study was to critically investigate how culture is represented and introduced in an English textbook at the elementary level. Cultural contents were analyzed throughout the 2021 revised edition of the English textbook for grade 5 of elementary school, published by the Ministry of Education and Culture (MOEC). The textbook was selected due to its widespread use in Indonesian schools and its production by MOEC. To analyze the data, a semiotic critical discourse analysis approach was employed on the basis of Kachru's concentric circle framework. Moran's 4P framework, addressing products, practices, perspectives, and people, as well as Bennett's theory on cultural values, were also used to further investigate the cultural dimensions presented in the textbook. The findings revealed a significant dominance of source culture content, while the representation of target culture and foreign culture was minimal. Of the 27 cultural views analyzed, expanding circle cultures were most prevalent. Our findings also indicated that product culture was the most prominent cultural dimension. The findings suggested that cultural embedment in the textbook facilitates students to have a broader perspective of diverse culture. Recognizing and understanding the multicultural values and their representations allows Indonesian students to develop their intercultural competence, which not only introduces them to diverse cultures but also strengthens their communication skills.

Abstract

Having sufficient English language ability is considered important for university students to begin their undergraduate studies. English serves as one of the principal working languages in ASEAN nations, necessitating that ASEAN students complete an English test from graduation.  This mandate would positively influence education, tourism, commerce, and investment in ASEAN regions. The present study was to measure the effect of the TOEFL preparation program on the English language proficiency of Islamic economics and business students in Indonesia. Using one group pre-test and post-test design, an experimental group consisting of 20 students was randomly selected from 50 students majoring in various Islamic economic and business programs in the first year. The experimental group were intensively taught and learned TOEFL preparation materials using a wide range of teaching and learning strategies and activities. Their ability was measured prior to and after the teaching intervention. The results of statistical measurement using t-test indicate a significant difference between the students mean score of both the pre-test and the post-test. Thus, this one group pre-test and post-test study served as an experiment to enhance students’ English language proficiency, particularly their listening, reading, and grammar mastery, respectively. The findings of the present study provide new insights for teachers and educational institutions in developing effective TOEFL preparation programs to improve students' English skills in various educational institutions.

Abstract

Jauh sebelum terbentuk Negara Indonesia, Bahasa sebagai sebuah entitasdalam tatanan kebangsaan selalu mendapat perhatian serius oleh parapejuang kemerdekaan maupun kaum cendikiawan. Urgensi kebahasaankhususnya pada bahasa nasional ternyata sangat disadari hingga kini olehpemerintah. Meskipun demikian, setelah 64 tahun Indonesia merdeka, barupada tahun 2009 diterbitkan undang-undang No. 24/2009 yang mengaturtentang Bahasa Nasional, Bahasa Indonesia.

Abstract

This study attempts to determine and analyze the need for ESP learning materials among boarding school students. A needs analysis must be conducted to determine these needs so that students receive the essential materials to support their present learning process or future jobs. The study employed a qualitative approach and a descriptive methodology. An Islamic boarding school's second-grade students comprise the research sample. The instruments of data collection research were questionnaires and interviews. The data are in the form of qualitative techniques taken from the questionnaires, interviews, and observation. Using descriptive methods, the researchers examined the data using percentages. The study's findings indicate that the demands of students living in dorms for ESP English lessons are pretty diversified. Thus, they require English not only for their immediate needs but also for their future careers as international speakers and interpreters. Since the needs of ESP learners are constantly evolving, it is advised that ESP English teachers and other interested parties be able to meet the needs of their students and conduct a needs analysis regularly.
