Abstract

The existence of marine fish in Indonesian waters is very abundant and will continue to provide benefits as long as it is managed properly. Marine fish that act as a source of animal protein can be utilized through the fishing process. The agriculture, forestry, and fisheries sectors are the main pillars of GDP at 23.01 percent. The East Coast region contributed the most, namely 74.73% or around 717.04 trillion rupiah to the GDP of North Sumatra. Bagan Percut is one of the potential areas in North Sumatra for efforts to develop the non-port fisheries subsector. Therefore, the social capital of fishing fishermen to be able to realize food security at the local level is important to be studied. This study aims to analyze the role of capture fisheries in realizing food security with sociological theory. This research uses a qualitative approach. The results showed that capture fisheries play a role in realizing food security in three pillars, namely availability, affordability, and utilization. Fishermen play an important role in fish production, agents play a role in distributing catches, and households play a role in food utilization. During the lean season, fishing households can maintain food security by utilizing social capital through the Serikat Tolong Menolong (STM), officers, and cooperatives. In conclusion, from the economic side, capture fisheries contribute to regional income and fishermen's source of income. From the social side, fishermen and agents/distributors must have social capital to support capture fisheries activities in realizing food security.

Abstract

The phenomenon of Korean Popular Culture or Korean Pop (K-Pop) has become a hot topic in recent years, including in Indonesia. This culture, originating from South Korea, encompasses various aspects such as music, dance with unique choreography performed by girl groups and boy groups, as well as dramas that have become widely popular. K-Pop culture has gained widespread appeal across all demographics, including children, teenagers, adults, and especially university students. Based on this phenomenon, the researcher conducted a study aimed at exploring the correlation between the K-Pop cultural phenomenon and learning motivation among university students. The research employed a quantitative approach, supported by primary data collection through the distribution of questionnaires to 18 respondents. The results of the study indicated that K-Pop culture positively impacts students' learning motivation. Some of the reasons cited for this positive influence include K-Pop's ability to enhance students' moods while studying, serve as a form of self-reward, provide unique motivation, and inspire students to pursue further education or work in South Korea. However, the study also revealed that K-Pop culture has negative effects on some students. Several respondents felt that K-Pop was a time-waster, as it led them to become too engrossed in watching K-Pop content, thus neglecting their academic priorities. This highlights that while K-Pop can be a source of motivation, excessive involvement in it may distract students from focusing on their studies. Abstract

The ecological crisis has become one of the most pressing global issues, triggered by the uncontrolled exploitation of nature due to capitalism and industrialization. This research aims to analyze the representation of the ecological crisis in popular culture through the film Okja (2017) by Bong Joon-ho. This film depicts the relationship between humans, nature, and animals in the context of modern capitalism, which often uses nature as a commodity for economic gain. Using a conflict theory approach in ecological sociology, this research highlights how capitalism damages ecosystems and exacerbates social injustice. In the film Okja, nature and animals are depicted as victims of exploitation by a capitalist system that does not care about ecological welfare. The conflict between economic interests and nature conservation in this film reflects the reality modern society faces. This research uses a content analysis method to explore how the film conveys ecological messages relevant to real conditions. The research results show that popular culture, especially films, has great potential in increasing public awareness of environmental issues. Okja not only offers criticism of capitalism and the exploitation of nature but also acts as an advocacy medium capable of inspiring social change in the way society views and treats the environment. Thus, this film becomes an important tool in communicating the ecological crisis and challenging society to care more about nature conservation.

This research aims to identify ecological values in Kerja Rani and its relevance in the context of the current environmental crisis. Through a literature study, findings show that Kerja Rani can serve as a means to raise ecological awareness and strengthen human relationships with nature. GBKP has the opportunity to utilize this ritual in environmental education, inviting congregants to appreciate the role of nature and integrate sustainability values in daily life.

Abstract

The Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program is an initiative developed by the partner institution of the University of North Sumatra (USU) to enhance the effectiveness of the elementary school (SD) learning process. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, where many schools are facing challenges in conducting effective teaching and learning processes, MBKM serves as an important solution. This program is focused on individual attention to students in developing their thinking skills, helping them explore their potential and personal interests, and overcoming the challenge of quick thinking. Currently, many elementary school students may struggle to develop quick thinking abilities and identify their interests and talents. This is due to their limited ability to work efficiently within a restricted timeframe. MBKM aims to bridge this gap, with the hope that the program will assist students in honing their mental efficiency, which, in turn, will provide significant benefits in meeting future demands. The MBKM program is expected to provide a solid foundation for student development, not only in learning but also in the discovery of personal interests and talents. In an ever-changing world, the ability to think quickly and efficiently will be a valuable asset, helping students become better prepared to face various challenges they may encounter in the future.

Abstract

Women’s involvement has been essential in supporting household food security and zero hunger sustainable development. Within families, women often play a crucial role in ensuring that all members receive safe and nutritious food. The Aisyiyah Women Farmers Group (Kelompok Wanita Tani, KWT) in Sei Rotan Village empowered women to engage in small-scale agriculture by utilizing their household yards. This community empowerment program aimed to improve the knowledge, skills, and independence of KWT members in optimizing yard spaces to strengthen women’s roles in achieving food security and promoting household food self-sufficiency. The program primarily targeted housewives who were active members of the KWT Aisyiyah. It was implemented through a combination of counseling, training, and mentoring using the Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) method. PRA facilitated the active participation of community members, enabling women to take on more prominent roles within both their families and the broader community. The program’s success was evaluated based on how effectively participants utilized their yards for agricultural purposes to meet their families’ nutritional needs. The crops grown by KWT members significantly reduced reliance on external sources of vegetables and contributed to sustaining healthy dietary practices within their households.

Abstract

The case of “All Eyes on Papua” is one concrete example where forests, people and conflict meet in a series of events that affect each other. “All Eyes on Papua” symbolizes global resistance and attention to the situation in Papua, especially related to forest exploitation and neglect of the rights of indigenous peoples living there. From a socio-ecological perspective, such conflicts not only damage the relationship between humans and nature, but also cause significant ecological damage. This journal aims to analyze the case of “All Eyes on Papua,” to better understand how conflicts that occur in natural resource-rich regions such as Papua cannot be separated from the wider global context. This research is qualitative in nature with a literature review approach. Primary sources include official documents, government reports, and statistical data related to deforestation and environmental policies in Papua. Secondary sources include scientific literature, articles, books, and reports from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) related to environmental issues, indigenous peoples' rights, and natural resource conflicts. The results of this study show that the conflicts that occur in Papua are closely related to global dynamics involving economic, political and ecological interests. The socio-ecological approach reveals that the exploitation of natural resources in Papua, fueled by multinational corporations and other global actors, has threatened the sustainability of the ecosystem as well as the rights of indigenous peoples.

In the social aspect of society, the influence of society on communication has increased, in contrast to before the improvements. In terms of accessibility, the impact has been felt by the community, especially the surrounding community. The community is certainly greatly helped by the role of the cleaning service. For example, it won't take long for them to throw away their rubbish to get to the landfill because there are already rubbish workers from the Medan city sanitation service close to where they live. Finally, in terms of the environment, the impact of littering has shown a significant influence because after this habit, rivers, roads and drainage have accumulated rubbish.
