Abstract

Personal hygiene of the skin is the most important mechanism for minimizing the transmission of infections, one of which is fungal infections. The disease that most often occurs due to fungal infections is Pityriasis versicolor. This disease is caused by several factors, one of which is poor personal hygiene. This study aims to determine the relationship between the level of personal hygiene knowledge and the level of knowledge of Pityriasis versicolor with the incidence of Pityriasis versicolor in students of the Undergraduate Medical Study Program, Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, class of 2022. This research is an observational analytical study with a cross-sectional approach. The method used is probability sampling with a simple random sampling technique. The total research sample was 170 people, of which 15 people (8.8%) had a history of Pityriasis versicolor. A total of 157 people (92.4%) had good knowledge about personal hygiene and 152 people (89.4%) had good knowledge about Pityriasis versicolor. The results of Fisher's exact test related to the relationship between the level of knowledge of personal hygiene and the level of knowledge of Pityriasis versicolor with the incidence of Pityriasis versicolor, namely p value > 0.05. This shows that there is no significant relationship between the level of knowledge of personal hygiene and the level of knowledge of Pityriasis versicolor and the incidence of Pityriasis versicolor in students of the Undergraduate Medical Study Program, Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University class of 2022. Keywords: Knowledge, Personal hygiene, Pityriasis versicolor

Abstract

Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers found in Indonesia. The most common skin cancers in Indonesia are basal cell carcinoma, squamos cell carcinoma, and melanoma. One of the harms caused by waves of solar radiation is damaging the DNA which later activates oncogene cells that could lead to cancer. One of the livelihoods that are abundant in Indonesia is agriculture. Farmers that are exposed to direct sunlight with excessive intensity are very susceptible to skin cancer which main risk factor is sunlight. The amount of outdoor activities with a superfluity intensity plus ignorance and the incapability to protect oneself from the sun causes the risk of getting skin cancer to be higher. Methods: The study was conducted using a descriptive approach with a transverse study design. Respondents took a total sampling of 64 respondents. Data collection was executed using a self-administered questionnaire instrument. The questionnaire consists of 20 numbers for the level of knowledge and 20 numbers for the attitude. Results: The level of good knowledge about sunlight as a risk factor for skin cancer as many as 45 people (70.31%), sufficient knowledge 17 people (26.56%), lack of knowledge 2 people (3.13%). Attitude about sunlight as a risk factor for skin cancer was 38 people (59.38%), 23 people (35.94%), a bad attitude was 3 people (4.68%). Conclusion: The level of understanding of farmers in Subak Sempidi, Sempidi Village, Mengwi District, Badung Regency regarding sunlight as a risk factor for skin cancer is in a good category.

Abstract

Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the pilosebaceous unit. This disease occurs on the skin of the face, body, back, and other areas of the body, and can leave scars on the skin which can be temporary or permanent. Recent data shows that the inflammatory process is the initial process in the pathogenesis of acne, several pro-inflammatory cytokines, one of which is interleukin 6 (IL-6), which plays a role in acne vulgaris. Analytical observational study with a cross-sectional approach. The research was carried out from February - November 2023 at the Skin and Venereology Polyclinic, RSUP Prof. Dr. I.G.N.G. Ngoerah Denpasar and the Clinical Pathology Laboratory of Prof IGNG Ngoerah Hospital. The sample consisted of 47 samples of patients with acne and 20 samples without acne aged 8 - 45 years who were selected through consecutive sampling according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. A sample of 3 milliliters of venous blood is taken which will then be checked for IL-6 with an ELISA kit. Data analysis with SPSS version 24 and p value <0.05 is significant. The mean IL-6 serum levels in the acne group was 110.2 ± 88.3 pg/ml while in the non-acne group it was 26.7 ± 23.7 pg/ml. There was a significant difference in the category of IL-6 levels in the acne and non-acne groups (95% CI 55.1 - 155.3, p<0.001). The correlation analysis of IL-6 levels with the severity of acne was strongly positive (r=0.951, p<0.001).

Abstract

Background: Leprosy reaction is an acute inflammatory of leprosy complication that potentially cause disability. Prompt and appropriate treatment is needed to prevent this permanent neurological complication. As inflammation of this reaction is mediated by cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), therefore targeting this substance may potential to prevent disability. This systematic review aimed to define COX-2 as a potential target of intervention in leprosy reaction. Method: Medline, Cochrane library, PubMed, and Google scholar databases were searched for articles published at any time. Observational study and clinical trial, comparative, prospective, retrospective, and descriptive study were extracted, analyzed, and discussed. Results: We found 6 studies that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria, with 104 participants with leprosy reactions and 143 comparators included in this review. In leprosy reactions, COX-2 expression was found in the vessels and nerves of the dermis and subcutis. Macrophages are cell mostly abundantly expressing COX-2. The COX-2 expression was found higher in the leprosy reaction compare to the non-leprosy reaction. Genetically, genes PTGS2 and TNFAIP6 encode COX-2 production also tend to increase especially in type 1 reaction. Conclusions: Preclinically and genetically, COX-2 is a potential target for intervention of leprosy reaction.

Abstract

Riwayat sering terpajan sinar matahari selama 5 jam sehari.

Abstract

Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is a common and debilitating complication of shingles, characterized by persistent pain that lasts for months to years after the resolution of the herpes zoster rash. While various treatments, such as anticonvulsants and opioids, are commonly used, they often fail to provide adequate pain relief and are associated with significant side effects. Botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A), traditionally used for muscle spasticity, has emerged as a promising treatment for PHN due to its ability to reduce pain through its neurotoxic effects. This literature review evaluates the safety and efficacy of BTX-A in treating PHN by reviewing 30 studies sourced from databases such as PubMed, Medline, and PubMed Central. The results indicate that BTX-A injections significantly alleviate PHN-associated pain, with many patients experiencing a reduction of up to 70% in pain severity. Additionally, BTX-A has been shown to improve patients' quality of life by enhancing sleep quality and reducing the need for oral medications. Although the results are promising, the review calls for further research to determine optimal dosing protocols and the long-term effects of BTX-A. Despite its limitations, BTX-A presents a potential therapeutic option for managing PHN, particularly for patients who do not respond well to traditional treatments.

Abstract

Skin aging is a natural phenomenon caused by a decline in collagen production that leads to skin thinning, dry and pale skin, wrinkles, and sagging. Skin aging may not contribute to the mortality rate. However, people tend to connect their symbol of inner self to external appearance. Therefore, psychosocial effects such as social anxiety, low self-esteem, and low satisfaction in life will affect their personal and social life. Anti-aging procedures focus on the prevention of damage, replacement of tissues, and skin rejuvenation. Bakuchiol (Psolarea corylifolia) is a novel anti-aging product with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging properties that is deemed effective and tolerable in skin rejuvenation. This comprehensive review aims to further examine the effectiveness and tolerability of bakuchiol based on previous studies in order to provide new insights into delaying skin aging. A comprehensive literature search was conducted to assess the effectiveness and tolerability of bakuchiol as a dermal anti-aging modality from search engines, PubMed, Google Scholar, CORE, Science Direct, and Cochrane using search terms (“Bakuchiol” OR “Psolarea corylifolia”) AND (“Dermal Aging” OR “Skin Aging”). Bakuchiol proved to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties to maintain youthfulness and skin appearance. Regarding tolerability, bakuchiol has fewer side effects compared to other commonly used modalities. Therefore, bakuchiol (Psolarea corylifolia) is an effective and tolerable modality in the treatment of aging skin.
