Abstract

Abstract Tanah Laut Regency in South Kalimantan holds strong potential in the beef cattle sector. However, Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) has negatively impacted livestock productivity and farmers’ incomes in Indonesia. This study aims to assess the impact of FMD on beef cattle farming and identify sustainable development strategies. A descriptive survey approach was used, combining quantitative and qualitative methods. Data were collected through field observations, farmer interviews, and secondary sources from the Department of Livestock and Animal Health in Tanah Laut. Analysis showed a high morbidity rate (60–75%) and low mortality (<5%). FMD reduced feed intake, weight gain, and caused marketing disruptions due to movement restrictions. Most farmers use traditional or semi-intensive systems with low biosecurity, increasing disease transmission risk. Control efforts like vaccination, quarantine, and biosecurity campaigns are ongoing but hindered by vaccine distribution and limited awareness. Sustainable strategies are urgently needed, including optimized vaccination, feed diversification, farmer group institutional strengthening, and adoption of modern livestock technologies. In conclusion, FMD presents a major challenge to beef cattle development in Tanah Laut Regency. Strong collaboration among government, academia, and farmers is crucial to build resilience and enhance the sector’s competitiveness amid disease threats.

Abstract

Naning Village has high agricultural potential due to the high rainfall and easy access to water sources. The easy air source and high rainfall cause many weeds to grow. One of the weeds that is often found is kiambang. The purpose of this community service is to socialize and practice the manufacture of compost fertilizer by utilizing weeds that grow in the surrounding area. Compost is made by utilizing kiambang and fermented using EM 4. This process is carried out in 2 stages, namely the stage of preparing raw materials such as kiambang, livestock manure and making EM4 starter and the composting stage, namely the raw materials are chopped about 2-3 cm. All the ingredients are mixed and placed in a closed and dark container so that the aerobic composting process occurs. The result of making this compost is the composting of the materials that have been mixed with parameters of changes in temperature, color, odor, and texture for several days left in a closed container. This change may be related to the drying process and chemical reactions. In addition, there are no rules indicating that the material is in good condition and not infected by insects. This community service was enthusiastically followed by farmer groups in Naning Village. The existence of this socialization and training is expected so that farmer groups can empower surrounding resources to support the agriculture carried out so that they can produce better products and reduce agricultural costs.

Abstract

Abstract

Goats are a livestock commodity that provides animal protein, supports food security, and offers income opportunities because of their relatively short production cycle. Successful goat farming relies heavily on effective sanitation and hygiene practices, which are crucial for preventing disease transmission and maintaining optimal productivity in the herd. This study aimed to examine the relationship between farmers’ characteristics (age, education, and farming experience) and the level of biosecurity and hygiene implementation, as well as their impact on disease occurrence in goat farms in Palangka Raya City, Indonesia. The study was conducted in August 2025 and involved 10 goat farmers who were surveyed, interviewed, and observed in the field. Data were analyzed using a scoring system and chi-square test (χ²). The results indicated that age and farming experience had no significant effect (p>0.05) on biosecurity and hygiene practices. In contrast, education significantly influenced the implementation of isolation biosecurity, health management, and hygiene (p<0.05). Moreover, farms with higher biosecurity and hygiene levels showed significantly lower disease occurrence. These findings underscore the importance of education in promoting effective biosecurity and hygienic practices. Enhancing farmer knowledge through targeted training and extension programs is essential for reducing disease risks, improving livestock health, and supporting the sustainability of goat farming in Palangka Raya.
