Abstract

This aim of this study was to examine the effect of Kepel (Stelechocarpus burahol) to the mice hepatocytes. Thirty male mice of 4 week aged were divided into three groups; control group was treated by aquadest, Dose 1x group was treated by 2.6 mg/g BW/day kepel powder (0.5 ml kepel suspension/day), and Dose 5x group was treated by 13 mg/g BW/day kepel powder (1.0 ml kepel suspension/day). The treatment was intragastrically for 14 days. The mice were euthanized and necropsy followed by the liver collection for histopathology assay. The histopathological examination of liver showed hydropic degeneration, cell death and extramedullary hematopoietic observed on mice hepatocytes. The ANOVA analysis showed that kepel caused increase significantly (p<0.05) of hydropic degeneration and decrease significantly (p<0.05) of cell death of mice hepatocytes.Key words: Stelechocarpus burahol, hydropic degeneration, cell death, extramedullary hematopoietic

Abstract

Tanaman Kumis Kucing merupakan salah satu tanaman yang memiliki banyak keuntungan dan sudah digunakan sejak dahulu dalam upaya menjaga kesehatan. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah mengevaluasi aktivitas diuretik dari penggunaan ekstrak Kumis Kucing dan mengukur kadar kalium dan natrium dalam urin. Sebanyak 24 ekor tikus dibagi menjadi empat grup; kontrol negatif (akuades), kontrol positif (furosemide), dosis ekstrak 1 (250mg/kg BB) dan dosis ekstrak 2 (500mg/kg BB). Ekstrak diberikan secara peroral selama 7 hari. Aktivitas diuretik pada kelompok ekstrak dan kontrol positif pada jam pertama (P>0.05) dan jam keenam (P<0.05). Volume urin kumulatif dosis 1 mendekati furosemide. Pengukuran mineral urin menunjukkan hasil kehilangan mineral natrium dan kalium pada kelompok ekstrak lebih kecil dibandingkan kelompok referensi. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa dosis efektif ekstrak Kumis Kucing adalah 250 mg/kg BB pada jam ke-2 dan menunjukkan kehilangan mineral dalam urin yang lebih kecil.

Abstract

Penggunaan mesh menjadi metode yang penting untuk terapi perbaikan hernia abdominalis karena dapat menurunkan angka kejadian hernia berulang dibandingkan dengan penggunaan metode penjahitan. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mempelajari gambaran darah dan respon jaringan hernia insisional babi yang diterapi dengan mesh komposit dan polipropilen dengan atau tanpa asam hyaluronat secara histopatologi. Penelitian menggunakan babi sebanyak 11 ekor berumur 3-4 bulan yang dibagi menjadi 3 kelompok. Kelompok pertama mendapatkan mesh komposit (Physiomesh®), kelompok kedua mendapatkan mesh polipropilen (Ultrapro®) yang diberikan asam hyaluronat (Guardic®), dan kelompok ketiga mendapatkan mesh polipropilen (Ultrapro®). Penelitian dimulai dengan menginduksi hernia setelah itu dilakukan pemasangan mesh, permanenan jaringan dan mesh, dan pembuatan preparat histopatologi. Hasil penelitian menunjukan tidak adanya perbedaan yang nyata pada gambaran darah complete blood count antar kelompok. Hasil penelitian gambaran sel radang di jaringan juga tidak menunjukan perbedaan yang nyata kecuali hasil pengujian paired T-Test untuk makrofag pada kelompok mesh polipropilen. Sedangkan pada pengujian One-Way Annova tidak memberikan hasil yang berbeda nyata. Hasil penelitian ketebalan jaringan juga tidak menunjukan adanya perbedaan yang nyata antar kelompok. Dengan demikian pemberian asam hyaluronat tidak memberikan dampak negatif terhadap jaringan.

Abstract

Recently, from many kinds of diseases one could be counted is a tumor disease. Tumor is a degenerative disease that involved many biological pathways within the host. A tumor or neoplasm can be defined as a disturbance of growth characterized by excessive, abnormal and uncontrolled proliferation of transformed or altered cell(s) at  one or more primary points within the host, and frequently at  one or more metastatic sites (Priosoeryanto, 1994).The treatment of tumor is mostly by medical surgery which usually combined with chemotherapeutic agent(s), unfortunately the using of chemotherapeutic agent can develop a seriously side effect to the treated-patients. Biological substances like interferon (IFN) known as anti-virus agent is also one of promising candidate for treating or preventing of tumor disorders.Feline and canine squamous cell carcinoma is one of tumor type that often found in cat and dog, and mostly develop to a very aggressive disorder. The using of in vitro cell culture is a way to avoid the use of live animals on the study of tumors especially the study of antitumor agent due to can mimic the in vivo condition.  The aim of the present study is to examine the growth inhibition activity of natural and recombinant canine interferon in order to find the suitable biological substances for combating tumor disorder especially in the field of veterinary medicine and also as an information for the development of tumor treatment in the human medical side.

Abstract

INTRODUCTIONTumor  is  a  degenerative disease  as  the second agent cause of death in human. This disease is caused by disturbances of cell’s growth that show alteration and uncontrolled of cells proliferation. The uncontrolled of cells proliferation is also accompanied by penetration of that cells into others tissue and develop on it. Removed of tumor is usually done by operation or chemotherapy. Alternative treatment that can be used is herbal treatment. Typhonium flagelliforme known as “Keladi Tikus” in Indonesia; is known has a chemopreventive effect (2). Other researchers also show flavonoid glucoside of T. flagelliforme (1) can induce the activity of apoptosis in colon cancer cells (5). The aim of this study is to examine the in vitro anti-proliferation activity of Typhonium flagelliforme leaves ethanol extract on MCA- B1and MCM-B2 cell line.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the estrous cycle and follicles development in female rats given infusion of fennel fruit that known to have phytoestrogen compound. Twenty five of female rats were used in this research and were divided into 5 groups. Group I was negative control group (NC), given 1 mL/100g bw of distilled water, group II was positive control group (PC), given 0.0045 mg/100g bw of ethinyl estradiol, groups III, IV and V were treatment groups (TI, T2 and T3), given fennel infusion at 36.5; 73 and 146 mg/100g bw respectively. All treatments were conducted every morning for 20 days by oral route. Changes of vaginal epithelium were observed through vaginal swabs previously stained with Giemsa stain. Histopathological examination of ovarian swere examined to reveal follicles development. Results showed that fennel fruit infusion extended the duration of estrous and metestrous phases, while shortened the proestrous and diestrous phases. Eventhough the longest estrous phase was found in T3 group, there was no significant effect on the lengthening of estrous cycle. Moreover, infusion of fennel fruit had no effect on the development of ovarian follicles, except tended to increase the number of corpus luteum.

Abstract

Epidemiologic studies of dietary marine n-3 fatty acids and risk of colorectal cancer have been inconsistent. The study was conducted to understand the inhibitory effect of fish oil in mice with colorectal preneoplasia induced by azoxymethane (AOM) and dextran sodium sulfate (DSS). In this study, Balb/c mice was induced by AOM 10 mg/kg body weight followed by administration of 1 % DSS during a week. Fish oil administrated orally at a dose of 1.5, 3, and 6 mg per day. Histopathological examination of the colon tissue (hematoxylin-eosin staining) was done by counting the number of inflammation, and hyperplasia foci, the number of mitosis epithelial cells, and the scores of dysplasia in ten visual fields. In the second month, decreasing in the number of inflammation foci occurred between the control and low dose groups with medium and high dose groups (p<0,05). While in the third and fourth month, decreasing in the number of inflammation foci were observed in all treatment group (p<0.001). The number of mitotic colonic crypt epithelial cells was statistically significant between control group and treatment groups, initially observed since the second month. In the second month to the fourth month, generally increasing of doses of fish oil has decreased the number of hyperplasia foci. Our research indicates that fish oil also inhibits the occurrence of dysplasia. In the third and fourth month, dysplasia was found in the control group. Dysplasia was found only in the fouth month in the treatment group.

Abstract

Tingginya tingkat keterulangan kasus urolitiasis baik pada hewan maupun manusia, menuntut penelitian dalam mencari solusi menurukan angka keterulangan. Penelitian urolitiasis membutuhkan hewan model urolitiasis yang sesuai dengan kondisi sebenarnya. Salah satu metode yang digunakan adalah menciptakan kondisi hiperoksaluria. Penggunaan induksi etilen glikol menjadi metode yang paling umum digunakan. Induksi ini menghasilkan kristal kalsium oksalat monohidrat.
