Abstract

Abstract

Estuaries and coastal waters are heavily influenced by anthropogenic activities and environmental factors, which can lead to ecosystem degradation, increased nutrients, and the risk of eutrophication. Kendari Bay, with its complex hydrodynamic conditions and various human activities in the vicinity, requires an analysis of the distribution of nutrients and chlorophyll-a (chl-a) to estimate the potential for eutrophication and its impact on aquatic ecosystems. This research was conducted in March-May 2023 at six stations in Kendari Bay. The distribution of nutrients in Kendari Bay revealed a varied pattern, with DIN concentrations higher in the “neck area” or narrow parts of the bay, phosphates more concentrated in the inner part due to slow water flow, and silica more abundant in estuaries because it comes from weathering rocks carried by river flows. Chl-a concentration tended to correspond DIN pattern, suggesting that phytoplankton growth was more influenced by nitrogen nutrients than phosphorus nutrients, as supported by an N:P ratio of less than 16. Overall, Kendari Bay was classified as mesotrophic with a relatively uniform trophic level due to morphological and hydrodynamic characteristics that narrow towards the sea and a low flushing rate. A comprehensive approach to managing human activities from upstream to downstream must be performed effectively to protect the bay area from eutrophication and environmental decline due to excessive nutrient runoff from land-based activities.

Abstract

Abstract

This community service program aimed to enhance the capacity of residents in One Ete Village, Morowali Regency, to restore degraded mangrove ecosystems impacted by coastal abrasion, aquaculture activities, and land exploitation. The program was designed using a participatory and collaborative approach through technical training on mangrove seedling production and planting, with Rhizophora mucronata selected as the primary species. A total of 30 participants engaged in hands-on field training covering seed propagation, nursery maintenance, and post-planting monitoring and evaluation. Seedlings were cultivated independently using a sand-soil medium in polybags and later transplanted to abrasion-prone coastal zones using spaced planting supported by bamboo stakes. Monitoring over two months recorded an 85% seedling survival rate, with early signs of ecosystem recovery such as increased fine sediment deposition and the reappearance of coastal fauna. The community also formed working groups to ensure the continued management of mangroves independently. The outcomes demonstrate that a community-based approach, integrated with technical and institutional support, can produce both ecological and social benefits and offers a replicable model for other coastal regions.

Abstract

Diversification of processed food products based on fishery raw materials for The Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) at Perumnas Poasia, Kendari City is one of the efforts to diversify food products derived from fish on a business scale. The aim of this activity is to increase knowledge, skills and community welfare through making fisheries products diversification. The partners of this PKM activity are MSME businesses at Perumnas Poasia, Kendari City. The activity implementation method includes two stages, they are socialization and training in making products such as meatballs and nuggets.  It is hoped that MSME business actors can process local fish resources into food products that are more varied and attractive for consumption, and can improve community welfare through the production of diversified processed fish. This activity is important to increase the added value of products and the quantity of MSME products.
