Abstract

This research examines the transformative role of female leadership in fostering a culture of quality in Vocational High Schools (SMK) in Indonesia from the perspective of Islamic education, guided by Islamic educational values and ethics. Using a qualitative, phenomenological approach, this study examines how female principals serve as agents of change in the vocational education landscape. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and document analysis. In-depth interviews were conducted with female principals as part of expert triangulation to enrich perspectives on Islamic education and the transformation of women's leadership. The interviews were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The research revealed five strategic approaches used by women leaders: transitioning from top-down to participatory decision-making; recognising teachers as internal clients to enhance collaboration; benchmarking with high-performing schools to set quality standards; improving infrastructure to meet national benchmarks; and building partnerships with industry to ensure graduates' relevance in the labour market. The novelty of this research lies in integrating Islamic leadership principles with contemporary quality management, which offers a gender-inclusive framework. The findings provide valuable insights into how women's leadership drives sustainable vocational education reforms that align with the needs of leaders in the workforce.

Abstract

This study explores family resilience in the Banyumasan community through a socio-cultural perspective, drawing on Walsh’s Family Resilience Framework, the Double ABC-X Model, and Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory. Employing a qualitative approach with interviews, participant observation, and documentation, data were collected from twelve households across peri-urban, highland, and lowland contexts, alongside community leaders, religious figures, and women’s group activists. The findings show that resilience is anchored in gotong royong (mutual cooperation), egalitarian interaction, and the cultural symbolism of the Ngapak dialect. Belief systems shaped by Islamic faith and Banyumasan pragmatism facilitate meaning-making, while kinship-based networks and neighbourly solidarity sustain economic and social survival. Direct, humorous communication reduces ambiguity and enhances collective problem-solving. Livelihood diversification strengthens economic security, whereas migration simultaneously improves material welfare and strains relational and educational dimensions. By linking these dynamics to national policy indicators, the study demonstrates that Banyumasan families exemplify resilience processes that are both culturally distinctive and policy-relevant, offering insights for culturally grounded and migration-sensitive interventions.

Abstract

Hilah is one of the essential concepts in the corpus of Islamic law, referring to a legal strategy employed to circumvent specific prohibitions without explicitly violating the textual provisions (nash). In the contemporary context, particularly within Islamic commercial law and modern Islamic finance, the concept of hilah has been extensively applied in financial products such as murabahah, tawarruq, and ijarah muntahiyah bi al-tamlik. This article aims to critically examine the implementation of hilah in modern Islamic economic practices and assess its alignment with maqashid sharia. The research adopts a normative juridical approach, employing content analysis of classical fiqh literature, contemporary fatwas issued by authoritative bodies such as the National Sharia Council-Indonesian Ulema Council and the Accounting and Auditing Organizations for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI), along with case studies from Islamic financial institutions. The findings reveal that although hilah may serve as a flexible legal instrument that offers certain benefits (maslahah) under specific circumstances, its manipulative use, particularly when driven solely by economic gain, can undermine the integrity and spirit of Islamic law. In practice, excessive reliance on hilah risks disguising forms of usury and compromising core principles of Islamic finance, such as justice, transparency, and protection for vulnerable parties. Therefore, strengthening regulatory and ethical frameworks in the development of Islamic financial products is imperative. Emphasis must be placed on a maqashid-oriented approach in assessing the validity of contracts, considering both formal legal compliance and substantive ethical and economic impact. This article recommends formulating fatwa guidelines grounded in maqashid and enhancing sharia literacy among practitioners in Islamic finance.

Abstract

The issuance of PMA No. 71 of 2015, later revised as PMA No. 32 of 2020, formally positioned Ma’had Aly within Indonesia’s pesantren-based higher education system. This policy marked a significant transformation by integrating traditional Islamic scholarship with formal academic standards under the Islamic Religious Higher Education (PTKI) framework. The study aims to analyse the management dynamics, educational quality, and strategic role of Ma’had Aly in strengthening the national Islamic higher education ecosystem. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, data were collected through interviews, focus group discussions, and direct observations at three leading Ma’had Aly institutions: Salafiyah Syafi’iyah Situbondo, Hasyim Asy’ari Tebuireng, and Iqna Ath Tholibin Rembang. The findings indicate that Ma’had Aly remains structurally dependent on the traditional pesantren model, where kiai hold central authority in governance and academic orientation. Despite the strength of classical Islamic pedagogy, which uses methods such as sorogan and bandongan, graduates often face limitations in professional and research skills compared to PTKI students. The study highlights the strategic potential of Ma’had Aly as a bridge between classical Islamic learning and modern higher education. Integrating practical competencies, research capacity, and institutional collaboration with PTKI is essential to enhance its academic relevance and societal impact, ensuring Ma’had Aly contributes effectively to the development of Indonesia’s Islamic intellectual landscape.
