Abstract

This research was aimed at finding Foreignization and Domestication in the novel Did I Mention I love You? It also described the cultural-specific terms of the data found. The data collected from the novel Did I Mention I Love You? and its translation were presented by descriptive qualitative method. The findings reveal that there were several techniques belong to foreignization and so do domestication. Foreignization consisted of literal translation, transliteration, borrowing, and transference while domestication consisted of transposition, omission, addition, and adaptation. It was also found some categories of cultural-specific terms. The result of this research showed that there were 287 data of foreignization and 565 data of domestication. Furthermore, there were 137 data of foreigization and 219 data of domestication categorized in cultural-specific terms classification based on Newmark’s.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the complexity of sentence structure in the reading text of Grade X textbooks provided by several publishers. This research his descriptive qualitative with the support of some descriptive quantification. The source of data taken from reading texts used by senior high school students grade X published by Cultural and Educational Ministry of Indonesia, Yrama Widya, and PT. Tiga Serangkai Pustaka Mandiri. The data of this research are all sentences found in the reading texts e.g., descriptive text, recount text, and narrative text. The data of this research deal with complexity of sentence structure measured by the number of simple sentences, compound sentence, complex sentence, and compound complex sentence. The result of this study shows that each textbook contains different percentage of simple sentences, compound sentences, complex sentences, and sentences. The textbooks published by Kementrian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan and Yrama Widia has the highest percentage of complex sentence (51.5%;37.9%, respectively). In contrast, the highest percentage in Tiga Serangkai Mandiri is simple sentence (55.7). The least percentage is compound sentence which can be seen in Kementrian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan and Yrama Widia (8.6%, 4.6%, respectively). The small percentage of compound complex is shown in the textbook published by Kementrian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan and Tiga Serangkai Mandiri (5.7%, 9.0%, respectively).

Abstract

This study aimed at finding out the students’ perceptions about online learning. It focused on evaluating the process of online learning and the types of teaching models used by the teacher to attract students' attention in English online learning. The design of this study was qualitative. It was conducted on the second-grade students of SMAN 1 Dompu with a population of 350 students. From this number, 40 students were randomly taken as the sample. The data were collected through questionnaires and interviews. The result of the study reveals that the majority of students (73.5%) 29 out of 40 students perceived online learning as something good. They agreed that online learning can improve their motivations in learning English as online learning attract students' attention is relevant to the students' needs, build the students’ confidence, and fulfill their satisfaction. From all the online teaching models applied in the online classroom, the students preferred Problem Based Learning. Collaborative Language Learning would be more favorable as it could make the students learn together on-site in a group rather than to discuss material online. Meanwhile, Task-Based Learning was less favorable to the students as it might put them into a psychological burden during the pandemic period.

Abstract

This study focuses on investigating the effect of audio-visual media (AVM) on students’ vocabulary retention and determining students’ perception about learning using AVM. This experimental research was conducted at an Islamic Boarding School in West Lombok Indonesia. The population of the study were the 9th grade students. Two classes were selected using cluster random sampling method. Each class consists of twenty-eight students, 56 in total. The classes were divided into two groups; Experimental and Control group. Pre-Test and Post-Test design and Survey method were used in the data collection. The data indicate that there was no student in the experimental group classified into excellent category, but after doing the treatment the students’ scores in the experimental group improved well. The result of paired sample test showed the Sig. value was 0.00 < 0.05 which means there was a significant difference of students’ learning outcome.

Abstract

Corona Virus spreading in 2020 caused all schools were temporarily closed and the learning process must be conducted online. Teachers had to adjust their learning method to the situation. It was new encounter for them to apply online learning which led to various challenges. The present study aimed to figure out how English teachers apply online teaching during the pandemic, what challenges they faced, and what strategies they used to overcome those challenges and turn it into opportunities so as they could succeed in online learning. This is a qualitative descriptive study which involved four English teachers in a state junior high school in Mataram. In obtaining the data needed, an open-ended questionnaire and semi-structured interview were applied. The obtained data were then analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings showed that English teachers conducted online teaching via Zoom, Google Classroom, WhatsApp, and Google Form. The teachers faced some challenges such as unavailable digital devices, unstable internet connection, limited internet data plan, teachers and student’s inability to use technology, and the lack of student’s motivation and the teachers applied some strategies to overcome those challenges. Further, some opportunities were provided for the teachers such as online teaching which could enhance teachers' digital literacy and develop their competency in using technology.

Abstract

There are still many obstacles to comprehending the reading text faced by the students. Thus, the implementation of teacher strategies in teaching reading is needed. The main problem that teachers faced was that sometimes the students got high scores but did not truly understand how the reading was supposed to be done. Thus, in these cases, the learning process did not run effectively. The researcher selected a descriptive qualitative research as the research design. The purposes of the research to find out the types of strategies used in teaching reading, to explain the reasons of teachers use those strategies and to find out the mostly strategy used in teaching reading. The subjects of this research are three English teachers at SMAN 1 Pringgarata. This research showed that, there were four types of teachers’ strategies; Scaffolding, think-aloud, reciprocal, and QARs. The main reasons of teachers used those four types of strategies such as to guide and assist students in an appropriate reading process, to make students be critical in receiving more important information, to make create an effective learning process and to stimulate students in responding the questions by the teachers. Finally, in accordance to the previous explanations, the scaffolding was the strategy mostly used by the teachers at SMAN 1 Pringgarata.

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to know and describe English learning strategies that are used by successful EFL learners in non-English departments at the University of Mataram and the factors driving them. This is a descriptive qualitative study using purposive sampling. The samples were 5 Engineering students and 5 Economics students with TOEFL scores of 457 to 560. The data was collected through the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) questionnaire version 7.0 and semi-interview. The result of the study reveals that successful EFL learners in Engineering and Economics implement all learning strategies at two different levels. The learners use compensation, metacognitive, and cognitive strategies at a high level, then memory, social, and affective strategies at a medium level. This research found that each learning strategy that the learners performed is intertwined. The naturalistic factors that contribute to driving the appropriation and implementation of those strategies are their English proficiency, learning style, and motivation. While there is no significant influence from gender identity found in this research.
