Abstract

This study explores four primary English teachers' agentive perspectives about assessment in their schools. Given the challenges brought by the abolition of International Standard School (ISS), the changed status of the school, and the exclusion of English from the 2013 National Education Curriculum (NEC), a teacher-based assessment was the only solution to the unavailability of assessment guidelines and the unsuitability of assessment materials and methods. Employing teacher agency theory, this study examines the agentive sides of the teachers' perspectives as they would represent the teachers' strategic solutions toward the school's emerging problems. The teacher-based assessment was expected to accommodate the school's context, the students, and the subject taught. This instrumental case study's data was collected through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussion, which was then analyzed through six phases of thematic analysis and by employing nVivo12 software. The study indicates that the challenges brought by the changed educational policies reinforced collaborative work amongst the teachers. The teachers' perspectives also represent their agentive projections toward English language assessment which was heavily shaped by the teachers' previous assessment experiences during ISS and their ultimate teaching objectives. The findings are expected to provide insightful knowledge about how English teachers responded to shifted educational policies and projected to accommodate the school's specific contexts of assessment. The findings are also expected to explain how people's perspectives can be examined from an agency perspective.

Abstract

The study examined English teachers’ agentive actions in a speaking assessment when utilizing students’ talks as model of responses to promote peer- learning. This instrumental case study views teacher agency on assessment from an ecological perspective, emphasizing the quality of teachers’ engagement in their environment. The study involved four primary English teachers teaching Year 5 and Year 6. The data were collected through classroom observations, audio-stimulated verbal recall interviews, and field notes. The data were analyzed thematically in nVivo12Pro software, where the themes were identified through the repetition of keywords. Co-coding, back-translation, and participant validation were employed to achieve the trustworthiness and reliability of the data. The study revealed that peer-learning was facilitated following the teachers’ understanding of their ecological contexts, i.e., the emerging problems during the assessment and the students’ assessment needs. The four teachers exercised their agentive actions by assigning the More-Proficient Students (MPS) to perform a speaking talk, from which the Less-Proficient Students (LPS) could learn, and utilized the MPS’ talks accordingly. The study findings strengthened the importance of teachers’ engagement with their ecological contexts when determining agentive actions. In addition, the study shows an interplay between theories of classroom-based assessment, teacher agency, and English for young language learners to promote peer-learning. This study has implications for relevant stakeholders about providing better supports for teachers exercising their agentive roles in facilitating students’ learning.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of information gap activities to improve students’ reading skills especially skimming and scanning. This study was conducted at the second grade students of SMAN 1 Woja. It was an experimental research using quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test design which were given to the experimental and control group as the participants. The experimental group was XI MIPA 1 which was taught using information gap activities about analytical exposition text, while, the control group was XI MIPA 2 which was taught without using information gap. The result of this study shows that information gap activities has an effect to increase students’ reading skills with the mean score obtained by the experimental group 69.35 which was greater than the control group which was 62.5. The t-test result indicated that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected in which at significance 5% t-test was greater that t-table (to > tt) which was 3 > 1.996 and at significance 1% to > tt which was 3 > 2.652. It means that there is significant effect of information gap activities to improve students’ reading skills. The observation data gained in this research shows that information gap activities provide a cooperative learning environment, help students to remember the information in the text easily, create fun learning atmosphere, and increase vocabulary mastery. The result proved that information gap activities can be the alternative strategy to increase reading skills. Keywords: reading skills, information gap activities, skimming, scanning.

Abstract

This study is aimed at examining the naturalness of post-editing translations using Google NMT and Yandex NMT by English Department students and to determine which of the two NMT tools came closest to the naturalness of a short story's translation. The subjects of this study were English Education students from the University of Mataram who come from the native area. Meanwhile, the object of this study was a short story entitled “Jack and The Beanstalk,” in English version. In this study, the researcher used Larson’s theory as the study’s reference to analyze the naturalness of translation in the short story “Jack and The Beanstalk” from English to Indonesia. The data were obtained by two methods of data collection: observation and documentation. The total data in this study was 1248 sentences, which were analyzed descriptively. The result of this study showed the percentage of text quality in naturalness translation that students produced in conducting post-editing. In GNMT most of the post-editing quality is “highly natural” with 88%, followed by “natural” with 5%, “less natural” with 6%, and “unnatural” with 1%. On the other hand, little few differences were found in YNMT, which shows that most of the post-editing quality is “highly natural” with 81%, followed by “natural” with 6%, “less natural” with 8%, and “unnatural” with 4%. According to that percentage, it can conclude that the quality of naturalness translation in post-editing from GNMT is easier to edit and produce better-translated text than YNMT.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the quality of students in pre-editing academic text input to GNMT. The participants in this study were students of the English Language Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, the University of Mataram, who took the "Translation and Interpreting" course in semester five of the 2021/2022 Academic Year. This data was collected from assignments completed by 20 students. Supporting information is collected through observation by sitting while learning takes place. Data were analyzed using content analysis procedures such as identifying, categorizing, describing, and explaining. The results of this study indicate that almost all students have good quality results in pre-editing, but it could be better, and some students fail to pre-edit text. The pre-edited output looks like a revised version of the text. Pre-editing shows how the source text changes, especially in language structure, word choice, and punctuation. The good or bad quality of the GNMT translated text represents the student's ability in pre-editing the source text. Thus, the more effort is put into pre-editing the text context, the more likely it is to produce text with better translation quality by GNMT.
