Abstract

This study was carried out to investigate the protective effect of ethanol extract of Curcuma mangga rhizomes on paracetamol-induced hepatotoxicity. High dose of paracetamol (1.35g/kg bw) was used to induce hepatic necrosis of mice liver. The male mice received ethanol extract of C. mangga rhizomes (100, 200 and 400 mg/kg BW) for 7 days. The hepatoprotective actvity of extract was compared to normal, positive (curcuma) and negative control. The liver function was evaluated by measuring the biochemistry parameters which include alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST). In addition, histophatological study on hepatic tissue section was also carried out. The C. mangga extract displayed hepatoprotective effect except at dose of 100 mg/kg bw. The increasing of serum levels of AST and ALT were inhibited after treatment with ethanol extract at doses of 200 and 400 mg/kb bw which was comparable with normal and curcuma as postive control (p>0.05). In addition, histological assessment of hepatic tissue demonstrated no liver damage, specially at dose of 400 mg/kb BW. The result indicate that ethanol extract of C. mangga rhizomes has hepatoprotective effect, especially at doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg bw . Abstract

This study aims to identify the antifeedant activity of Azadirachta indica A. Juss root bark against Hong Kong caterpillar (Tenebrio molitor). A. indica A. root was macerated in n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol. The investigation of antifeedant activity was conducted by using the no choice leaf disk method. The antifeedant activity (%AI) tests showed that the extracts of n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol with each concentration of 0.5% were 6.71, 71.78, and 40.14%, respectively. The ethyl acetate extract demonstrated the most active antifeedant activity. Ethyl acetate extract was fractionated to obtain five subfractions (A-E). Each subfraction with each concentration of 0.5% showed the %AI of 70.55, 85.29; 67.40, 82.70 and 82.22%, respectively. Furthermore, GC-MS results demonstrated that ethyl acetate extract contained 19 compounds. The main compounds are methyl hexadecanoate and methyl 8-octadecenoate. Further purification of fraction A, which has the highest amount, was then carried out. The obtained isolate, i.e., A32, was determined as ethyl p-methoxycinnamate confirmed by 13C- and 1H-NMR, FTIR, and MS spectra. The presence of ethyl p-methoxycinnamate makes A. indica A. root is potential as T. molitor antifeedant. The implication of these findings is to reference herbal antifeedants and reduce the use of synthetic pesticides.

Abstract

The activity test of sunscreen lotion from the ethanolic extract of Artocarpus camansi leaves was carried out. The activity of sunscreen lotion as sun protecting factor (SPF) is ranging from 28.716 ± 0.1557 to 29.740 ± 0.1360, while the SPF of pure compound is 28.483 ± 0.1422. The type of lotion is water in oil (w/o) with viscosity and pH values in the range of 3057.1–5001.1 cP and 6.86–7.89, respectively. The viscosity and pH values obtained were following the standard SNI 16-4399-1996. The value of dispersion is in the range of 4.60–6.90 cm, while the value of adhesion is in the range of 14.55–25.03 s. The pure compound is thought to be γ-sitosterol by analysis of its molecular weight similarity and positive ion fragment m/z with a melting point of 147 °C. From the molecular docking, it is known that γ-sitosterol has the highest binding affinity value of −7.4 and −8.2 kcal/mol to human neutrophile collagenase (PDB ID: 1BZS) and fibroblast collagenase-1 (PDB ID: 966C), respectively. The presence of active compounds in the ethanolic extract of A. camansi lotion can support the activity of the SPF so that it can be used as a sunscreen formula.
