Abstract

Language cannot be separated from culture, thereby, learning a language must involve learning its culture. Course books as one of the elements of English Language Teaching (ELT) can be one of the media to accommodate cultures. This study is a qualitative content analysis which specifies on summative content analysis. Two series of English course books were selected by employing purposive sampling, namely When English Rings a Bell (WERB) and Bright. Three units in each course books were selected by employing systematic random sampling. The results show that culture in WERB and Bright is represented in the form of source culture, target culture, and international culture. WERB and Bright mostly represent the source culture. This study argues that the high representation of source culture is affected by the adoption of 2013 curriculum syllabus to build students’ identity. Although the target culture and international culture is very lowly represented, it may provide some opportunities for the students, especially for Junior High School Students, to start building their cultural awareness and intercultural competence.

Abstract

Writing is considered to be the most difficult skill to master for EFL students. This experience was faced by English Language Education (ELE) students at Universitas Internasional Batam (UIB). Based on the observation, the results of their writings were not satisfying. This study assumed that the students might feel anxious when they were writing in English. Therefore, this study aims to examine the types and causes of writing anxiety of ELE students at UIB. This study employed explanatory design of mixed method research. The research instruments were questionnaires adopted from SLWAI and CWAI developed by Cheng (2004). To extend the deeper analysis, this study conducted interviews to the high- and low-level writing anxiety students. This study found that the most dominant levels of writing anxiety is high-anxiety (71.43%). In terms of writing anxiety, this study found that cognitive anxiety is the most dominant type with the mean of 26.37. Next, when studying the cause of writing anxiety, the most dominant cause was linguistic difficulties. This result was in line with the interviews with high-and low- writing anxiety students. Students with both high and low writing anxiety still found that linguistic difficulties affect their writing anxiety. Therefore, the learning process at English Language Education needs to be equipped with sufficient linguistic competences in the first year, such as vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation.

Abstract

Speaking is one of the most troublesome expertise to ace. It likewise happens to most of the students in Harapan Utama senior high school in Batam. They have numerous problems communicating in English since they believe that English is not a daily language in Indonesia. Therefore, this study aims to find out whether Role-play through the IGTV significantly improves students' ability in speaking skills. This study chose 37 students of grade 10 at Harapan Utama senior high school. This survey research tested the hypotheses that have been set. Therefore, this study used the speaking score (Pre-Test & Post-Test) as the research instrument. From the data conducted by one group pretest and posttest design, the data analysis of t-test shows that the value of Sig. (2-tailed) is 0.00 <0.05. Therefore, there is an average difference between Pre-Test and Post-Test learning outcomes. In addition, based on the Interview, some improvements were achieved in the post-test scores, such as pronunciation, vocabulary, and understanding. Thus, to conclude, using roleplaying through IGTV as a classroom teaching technique can improve students’ speaking skills. Last, this research can be useful and used as an additional guide, particularly in improving the ability of students to speak English.

Abstract

This research investigates the integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) into 21st-century English language learning, with a focus on understanding student perceptions and expectations. Conducted in collaboration with a public high school in Batam City, the study aims to explore teachers' perspectives on ICT in English Language Teaching (ELT), identify student needs for technology-based instructional materials, and propose strategies to enhance digital literacy for English learners. Through classroom observations and student surveys, the study reveals a generally positive attitude towards English learning and ICT integration among students, alongside areas for improvement in enhancing collaborative learning experiences. Despite teachers' readiness to implement e-learning, there's a perceived lack of sufficient ICT support in EFL classes. Interviews with Grade 11 students underscore the efficacy and enjoyment of online resources, with a desire for more innovative technology-based learning methods. Collaboration with University International Batam offers potential for implementing such methods, though logistical challenges remain. The findings reveal the importance of addressing gaps in ICT integration to optimize English language learning experiences for students.

Abstract

The research using the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method aims to help students enhance their speaking abilities through Digital Game-Based Learning (DGBL) using the Wordwall game. This research is motivated by the low speaking skills of students at the elementary level who need innovative methods to increase their participation and speaking ability. This CAR method involves four steps, each consisting of observation, planning, action, and reflection. The findings of this research revealed a considerable improvement in the use of the Wordwall game, including increased active involvement and confidence in speaking. In conclusion, the use of DGBL with Wordwall proved effective in improving the speaking skills of students at the elementary level, as well as creating a more interactive and fun learning environment. This study recommends further use of this method in various educational contexts to improve students’ speaking skills.

Abstract

In the realm of language education, the influence of governmental regulations on language programs is substantial, as evidenced by Indonesia’s regulatory framework in Law No. 20/2003. This study examines Foreign Language Teaching Anxiety (FLTA) among pre-service English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers during their teaching practicum, focusing on the role of fear of negative evaluation, self-perception of language proficiency, and teaching inexperience. Utilizing a mixed-methods research design, quantitative surveys were conducted with 68 respondents, and qualitative interviews were held with five participants in the Kepulauan Riau area. Results from statistical analyses, including regression, indicate that FLTA has a modest impact on the teaching experience of pre-service teachers. Thematic analyses from qualitative data provide deeper insights into the nuanced interplay of factors contributing to FLTA. The discussion highlights the study’s contributions to the field, advocating for the importance of practical teaching experience, mentorship, and adaptive teaching approaches to mitigate FLTA. This comprehensive approach underscores the necessity of addressing anxiety to enhance the competence and confidence of pre-service English teachers, ultimately contributing to more effective language education.

Abstract

The Merdeka Curriculum was introduced to address the need for a more flexible and responsive education system, which is crucial in a diverse country like Indonesia. Educational challenges vary significantly between urban and rural areas and public and private schools. This study investigates the factors that hinder the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum and examines how English teachers apply it in senior high schools located in inland and hinterland areas of the Riau Islands region.. The methodology used a mixed-method approach. The research involved 30 English teachers—23 from island schools and 7 from hinterland schools. Data were gathered through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, with 5 teachers providing in-depth insights during interviews. The results reveal significant gaps in implementation, particularly among hinterland teachers, where 42.9% reported limited adaptability. The finding shows that each teacher faces unique challenges, which include: 1) administrative costs, 2) adjustments to new curricular components, and 3) a lack of government support, all of which hinder successful integration of the curriculum. To successfully implement the Merdeka curriculum, the following are essential: 1) involvement and support from all parties, 2) comprehensive teacher training, and 3) teachers' readiness. This study emphasizes that the successful implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum depends on the active participation of every school, ensuring that there is readiness, support, and adaptation to the new educational framework.

Abstract

Diversity of religions, tribes, and races in Indonesia make Indonesia as a unique and rich country, but it also causes some disputes. It is not one or two times the disputes emerges. This indicates that Indonesians have lack of knowledge about racism and harmonization and how to maintain harmony by respecting and tolerating others. Thus, education on racism and harmonization is urgently needed. This study is going to design or create an educational video that is uploaded to YouTube that is expected to be able to increase people awareness on racism and harmonization. YouTube is chosen because it is easily accessed. The educational video got positive responds that stated that the video can enrich knowledge and increase the awareness on racism and harmonization. This may because the video outlines unique and interesting explanation through the animation and the video is easy to understand.
