Abstract

The study assessed the existence of the local wisdom of swidden agriculture on Wawonii Island. Specifically, it identified the farming patterns in Wawonii Island and analyzed the local wisdom of swidden agriculture in Wawonii Island. Purposive sampling procedures were used to get an informant sample, and proportionate random sampling was used to get a farmers' sample. Informants in this study came from community leaders, village staff, and the agriculture and forestry service district. Konawe Islands and extension workers, while the sample of farmers totalling 30 people was taken proportionally from each sub-district on Wawonii Island. Data were collected using a structured interview schedule and summarized with percentages and means. The analytical method used is descriptive qualitative analysis. Results showed the local wisdom of the farmers who used to be slowly fading away. Farmers no longer carry out the tradition of land clearing as before due to limited land. The addition of chemical inputs also slowly began to be carried out because of the short period of resting land. The people of Wawonii Island manage their fields using two agricultural patterns carried out for generations: mixed cropping and monoculture. The existence of local wisdom of field farmers has decreased. The study recommended that the government provides policies that support the preservation of the local wisdom of the people that contribute positively to the balance of forest and land resources therein.

Abstract

Abstract

Empowerment of coastal communities is a must because of the many limitations, causing backwardness, especially economically. The specific objective of this program is to realize a pond farming business that has high productivity at low cost and is environmentally friendly so that farming sustainability can be realized, in addition to realizing a farming system with proper management, both production management and institutional and financial management. The method that will be used to achieve this goal is to provide group management and business management training. Business management training is carried out to provide an understanding of the advantages of organic pond cultivation and is also carried out directly in real business. Activities are carried out simultaneously by the group members involved in the planned stages and guided by field staff and the implementing team. The technical stage of its implementation is that the seeds purchased from the hatchery are maintained in a smelting pond for one month. Previously, soil turning, drying, liming, and applying organic fertilizer were carried out. On the other hand, this farmer group can implicitly know and carry out organic farming/fishery activities so that they have supported the government's program on environmentally friendly organic and sustainable farming (Go-Organic).

Abstract

This paper describes a community empowerment program by implementing Internet of Things (IoT) Water Quality Monitoring technology to encourage innovation and increase productivity in shrimp cultivation. Collaboration between Muhammadiyah University of Kendari, Ahmad Dahlan University, and local farmers has resulted in the latest solution to optimize shrimp pond management. This empowerment involves a series of stages, from identifying water quality problems to implementing IoT monitoring infrastructure in the field. First, through intensive discussions, critical issues faced by farmers were identified. Based on these findings, the development team from Ahmad Dahlan University designed and implemented a solution in the form of IoT Water Quality Monitoring. Furthermore, the Muhammadiyah University of Kendari held intensive training and workshops to increase farmers' understanding of data interpretation and tool operation. The workshop lasted for three days, which successfully improved farmers' practical skills and increased optimism regarding increasing shrimp production. The final stage of this empowerment involves installing IoT Water Quality Monitoring infrastructure at identified shrimp farming locations. In conclusion, implementing this technology significantly positively impacts shrimp cultivation productivity and farmer welfare. Recommendations for further development and wider dissemination of information provide a basis for improving sustainability and efficiency in the local fisheries sector.

Abstract

The livelihood of the residents of Towua Village is generally farming, including both pond farming and rice field farming. Towua Village has a pond area of 585.69 hectares used for milkfish farming. Discussions with the village head revealed that the productivity of the community-owned ponds is still very low because they are managed traditionally. This issue also affects the Harapan Jaya Bandeng Farmers Group. One possible solution is to implement or apply technology to help improve the quality of the ponds. The solutions to address the partner's problems include increasing the supply of natural feed through organic farming systems, improving pond management and governance, and providing business management training. These solutions are implemented using a holistic and multidisciplinary research-based approach to achieve farmers' welfare and village economic independence. The method used in this activity is the action research approach. The results of training, assistance, and monitoring of pond quality have led to an 80% increase in partner knowledge, an 80% increase in partner skills, a 60% increase in partner accessibility, and a 50% increase in partner income.

Abstract

The seaweed cultivation business in the fisheries sector remains the livelihood of coastal communities; thus, it must be designed based on welfare improvement, business sustainability, and regional development. The various efforts must begin with studies on the characteristics of the farmers and seaweed businesses. Therefore, this study analyzes the characteristics of seaweed cultivation businesses from socioeconomic aspects. The research was conducted in two regencies in Southeast Sulawesi Province: South Konawe Regency and Bombana Regency, as the research location's main parameters. This study employed quantitative descriptive analysis. The data was obtained through field surveys on seaweed farmers and seaweed trading business actors. This research emphasizes social aspects, including age, education, business experience, and family dependents, while the economic aspects focus on capital and marketing. The results revealed that the seaweed farmers in Southeast Sulawesi Province are mainly those of working age with relatively fewer family dependents and excellent experience but a low level of formal education. This phenomenon makes several parties, including the authorities and universities, obliged to take action to improve farmers’ quality and skills to be more agile and innovative. Moreover, Most seaweed farmers obtained capital from traders; consequently, they had to sell their harvest to traders below the market price. Therefore, developing a partnership system supporting and protecting groups of farmers, traders/cooperatives, and the seaweed agroindustry with additional capital and technological support from the government and universities is recommended.
