Abstract

The process of “othering” in literary works has been widely researched. However, most the research on othering in literary works have focused more on group identities, such as race or religion. Othering process for people with disabilities are rarely discussed. The article written by Hervé Guibert entitled Des Aveugles (The Blind People) published in 1985, contains aspects about the life of people with visual disabilities. However, these people are positioned as actors who behave evilly in the novel. The author describes the characters with visual disabilities as people who are passionate and like to kill and finally they die at the end of the story. Female character also experiences a more tragic death than the male characters. This clarifies gender positions and hierarchies in the story. Therefore, this article attempts to examine the process of othering for people with disabilities related to gender hierarchies in the novel. The theory of subalternity is used as a lens to read the othering process. Meanwhile, the content analysis of the story is used as method of analysis.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze how Jewish identity is constructed in the West and the East, as represented in the graphic novels Fagin the Jew by Will Eisner and The Last Jew in Penang by Zayn Gregory and Arif Rafhan , using Halliday's multimodal approach. This approach focuses on various modes of communication, such as verbal, visual, gestural, and spatial, in constructing the narrative of Jewish identity in both novels. Fagin the Jew portrays Jewish identity in the Western context, specifically in 19th-century London, emphasizing antisemitic stereotypes and social marginalization. In contrast, The Last Jew in Penang depicts Jewish identity in the multicultural environment of Southeast Asia, where Jewish identity is more accepted and assimilated into the local community. The findings reveal that cultural differences significantly influence the representation of Jewish identity in these two novels. Through an analysis of verbal, visual, gestural, and spatial modes, it is found that Western graphic novels tend to depict Jewish identity in narratives of prejudice and alienation, while Eastern graphic novels highlight narratives of coexistence and adaptation. This research concludes that multimodality plays a crucial role in reflecting the complexity of Jewish identity shaped by differing historical, social, and cultural contexts in the West and the East.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The issue of immigration became prominent in French political discourse in 2005 that leads to debate about France and nationalism. During the lead-up to the 2007 French Presidential election, various concepts of a French national identity were promoted by candidates: Nicolas Sarkozy, Ségolene Royal, François Bayrou, and Jean-Marie Le Pen. Candidates gave particular attention to ethos, specifically ethos émotif. In this article, the researcher will characterize the ethos émotif presented by the four candidates mentioned above. The ethos will be then examined whether it were successfully embodied in these candidates' speeches by investigating the public reaction they received based on articles published in the French media. This research will apply a critical discourse analysis and interactional sociolinguistics approach using elements of interaction formulated by Stébe (2008) and Kerbrat-Orecchioni (1990). Data will be classified using the software LEXICO 3.

Abstract

The Practice of Pemotongan dan/atau Pelukaan Genitalia Perempuan (P2GP) or Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) remains a serious problem in Indonesia because it is rooted in traditions, religious views, and cultural constructs that have been passed down through generations. The urgency of addressing this topic lies in the medical and social impacts that harm women, as well as the debate over terminology that influences public perception of the practice. This research data was obtained from the Instagram account @puan_amalhayati, which consistently campaigns against FGM/C using alternative terms to replace the term "sunat perempuan." The research focused on analyzing the content of posts, choice of terms, narratives, and netizen responses in the comments section. The method employed was content analysis, utilizing a descriptive-qualitative approach. As an analytical tool, this research refers to anthropolinguistic theory by emphasizing three main indicators: context, language ideology, and indexicality. This theory allows for the disclosure of how language becomes a means of communication as well as an instrument for shaping meaning, identity, and power relations. The research findings indicate that the use of the term P2GP is a linguistic strategy that serves to reposition the meaning of this practice from the realm of religious tradition to the realm of violations against human rights. The narrative constructed by Puan Amal Hayati emphasizes medical, gender, and progressive religious aspects to challenge the legitimacy of tradition. Meanwhile, netizen responses demonstrate an ideological contestation between references to the Kitab Kuning and arguments based on medical and human rights grounds.

Abstract

A movie that portrays the traditions of its own region is more effective in conveying moral messages based on events that have occurred. Therefore, this research examines the representation of a short movie originating from the Madurese community titled "Tunanganku Mautku," which represents the occurrence of the "carok" tradition with a woman as the main cause. Madura has been known for its strong tradition of arranged marriages since ancient times. Just like in this movie, the character Anshori binds his ring finger with Ulfa's through the arranged marriage arranged by their parents. However, behind this, there is a figure named Supri who first captured Ulfa's heart and told her to wait. Supri felt his dignity was being trampled on by Ulfa's family because Ulfa and Anshori were matched by Ulfa's parents on the grounds of greater wealth and family ties. Based on the results of the reading and analysis conducted by the researcher, the Madurese community has applied a normalization of emergency status with an ethnic symbol, namely "carok." Therefore, in this context, Supri is not blamed; instead, customary law holds Anshori responsible for taking a woman who is already under Supri's authority. Roland Barthes introduced the terms "signifier" and "signified," which were developed into a theory of metalanguage with two levels: denotation and connotation, and myths. This is in line with research related to the transcript text in the movie to explain the aspects or realities depicted in the movie "Tunanganku Mautku".
