Abstract

In additive manufacturing, mechanical vibrations generated during the printing process produce characteristic acoustic emissions, which are directly influenced by toolpath kinematics. These vibrations can adversely affect dimensional accuracy and interlayer adhesion, underscoring the need for effective process monitoring. This study investigates the correlation between specific toolpath geometries and their acoustic signatures in a Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) 3D printer to establish a foundation for non-invasive condition monitoring. Five fundamental motion patterns—diagonal (Quadrants I-III and II-IV), horizontal, cylindrical, and vertical—were fabricated in an anechoic chamber. Acoustic emissions were captured via two microphones positioned 5 cm from the printer and analyzed in the time domain using statistical features: Root Mean Square (RMS), Kurtosis, and Crest Factor. The measured sound pressure levels ranged from 0.5 Pa to 1.5 Pa. Results indicate that the vertical toolpath yielded the lowest RMS (0.0863) and Crest Factor (5.38) values, reflecting the least intense and most stable acoustic emission. Conversely, diagonal patterns exhibited significantly higher values, denoting greater vibrational energy and transient fluctuations. These findings demonstrate a definitive influence of motion geometry on a printer's acoustic signature. The vertical pattern is identified as the most stable under the tested parameters. This research confirms that time-domain acoustic analysis is a viable technique for characterizing machine performance. Establishing this baseline correlation enables the future development of real-time, sound-based monitoring systems capable of predicting print defects and facilitating predictive maintenance, thereby enhancing the reliability and quality of additive manufacturing processes.

Abstract

Abstract

A dynamometer is an instrument used to directly measure the cutting force generated during a CNC milling process. Politeknik Negeri Lhokseumawe currently does not have a dynamometer to support laboratory practice and cutting-force research, so the development of an economical octagonal-ring-based dynamometer structure is required. This study applies parametric modeling based on Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macros in SolidWorks to automate dimensional variation of the octagonal ring, and analyzes the effect of geometric variation on sensitivity, stress, factor of safety, stiffness, and natural frequency using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Three geometric parameters were varied—side length (l), ring thickness (t), and ring width (b)—across seven dimensional combinations, each tested under fifteen loading scenarios (Fx, Fy, Fz at five points), producing 105 simulations. The VBA macro successfully automated parameter updates, model rebuilding, and simulation execution without manual intervention. Variation V1 produced the highest sensitivity but FOS 1, whereas variation V4 (l = 18 mm, t = 4 mm, b = 18 mm) was selected as the optimal design, increasing average sensitivity by 20% (Fx), 26.67% (Fy), and 35.29% (Fz) compared with the initial design, while maintaining a minimum factor of safety above 2 and a natural frequency of 130.49 Hz. This optimal design can serve as a reference for developing a physical dynamometer to support CNC milling machining practice and research

Abstract

The surface quality of lathe-machined workpieces is primarily governed by three cutting parameters: spindle speed, feed rate, and depth of cut, as the resulting surface roughness directly determines the functional quality of the machined component. Empirical observations indicate that achieving a favourable surface roughness in the turning process depends on the appropriate selection of cutting tool parameters, since the cutting tool constitutes one of the principal elements of the turning system alongside the machine tool and the workpiece itself, and exerts a significant influence on the resulting surface finish. This study aims to determine the surface roughness values and roughness grades of St.42 steel under varying spindle speeds and depths of cut during the turning process. Experiments were performed using a PL-1000 G lathe machine with ST 42 steel specimens, and surface roughness was measured using a Mitutoyo SJ-310 roughness tester. The results indicate that the optimum surface roughness value (Ra) at a spindle speed of 1020 rpm and a depth of cut of 0.2 mm was 3.573 µm, corresponding to roughness grade N8. At a spindle speed of 1800 rpm and a depth of cut of 0.4 mm, the optimum Ra value was 1.678 µm, corresponding to roughness grade N7. Meanwhile, at a spindle speed of 550 rpm and a depth of cut of 0.2 mm, the Ra value obtained was 3.925 µm, corresponding to roughness grade N8. Overall, the average surface roughness values obtained, in terms of Ra and roughness grade (N7 and N8), indicate that the machined surfaces fall within the fine-finish category for the turning process.
