Abstract

Abstract

Root canal infection is a polymicrobial infection that is a progression of chronic caries affecting the dental nerve tissue and surrounding root tissue, which can be accompanied by extremely uncomfortable sharp pain. Enterococcus faecalis is one of the infecting agents that can be found in primary root canals experiencing endodontic infections and is resistant to root canal irrigation materials, thus leading to root canal treatment failure. Herbal plants have been used since ancient times by the Indonesian people to address health issues due to the believed beneficial properties of their constituents. Research on torch ginger reports pharmacological activities such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and anti-aging effects. Torch ginger (E. elatior) is a spice plant reported to have antibacterial bioactive compounds. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of ethanol extract from torch ginger leaves (E. elatior) against Enterococcus faecalis bacteria. The Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method was used to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value and the streaking method from MIC testing to determine the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) with 8 concentrations and 2 controls. Data analysis of the MIC and MBC values was performed using One-Way ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis parametric tests. The ethanol extract of torch ginger leaves (E. elatior) has minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values against Enterococcus faecalis bacteria. The minimum inhibitory concentration of the ethanol extract of torch ginger leaves is at a concentration of 3.125%, while the minimum bactericidal concentration is at a concentration of 65%.

Abstract

The research employed a research and development method modified from Borg and Gall, consisting of needs assessment, design, and development. The research objectives were to portray the material of teaching Arabic written in class ten at Islamic senior high school and design a model of enrichment material graded and used independently for the students who graduated from public junior high schools. The study showed that the students who graduated from public junior high school and continued study to Islamic senior high school must be assisted by an enrichment material for their independent study because the existing material did not match their previous knowledge. In this research, a model of teaching material was designed based on three characteristics; first, readability is the main character of supporting teaching material. Secondly, grammar and daily culture made it easier to grab meaning and were thirdly graded and comprehensive. The teaching material was accompanied by audio material for listening, conversation, and reading to the substitute teacher when the student studied independently.

Abstract

To address three theories in teaching English for young learners (Piaget, Vygotsky, and Brunner), the researchers believe that an effective teaching teachniques that pay attention not only to the needs of the young learners but also to their interests are very important. This research reported our pre-experimental study on the effectiveness of using Piaget, Vygotsky, and Brunner theories in teaching English for young learners at SDN Kebun Bunga 6 Banjarmasin. There were 26 students of the fourth grade, study English at SDN Kebun Bunga 6 Banjarmasin, participated in this research. The data collected by conducting three times treatment in one class of the fourth grade, and written tests (pre-test and post-test). Findings revealed that the students got better score after the implementation of those three theories (Piaget, Vygotsky, and Brunner) in the classroom; they were very enthusiastic learned English in the classroom by interacting with the teachers and the peers. Their responses toward this activity were also positive. This research is expected to be beneficial for teachers who are interested in applying those three theories in English classroom, especially for young learners’ classroom.

Abstract

This article examines an epistemological conflict at the intersection of empirical falsification and theologically grounded causal explanation. Focusing on publicly mediated debates in Indonesia between a medical science communicator and self-identified mystical practitioners (dukun), it analyzes how empirical challenges are deployed as instruments of epistemic adjudication. The study introduces the concept of theological immunity to explain why claims anchored in divine causality remain resistant to falsification. Rather than treating empirical non-performance as refutation, mystical practitioners reclassify failure through appeals to divine will, ritual propriety, or moral contingency. The analysis adopts an asymmetrical framework: Popperian falsifiability and methodological naturalism are treated as components of an epistemic regime that structures scientific challenge, while Islamic mystical epistemology (ʿilm al-ḥikmah) is examined on its own terms as a coherent theocentric causal ontology. Drawing selectively on Kuhn’s account of paradigm conflict and incommensurability, the article conceptualizes these encounters as clashes between epistemic regimes rather than disagreements within a shared paradigm. Empirical tests function as adjudicative mechanisms only within the naturalistic paradigm authorized by the scientific regime, but lose force across regimes grounded in incompatible ontological commitments. The result is an epistemic deadlock: refutation operates internally yet fails externally, highlighting the scope limits of falsifiability and clarifying why empirical testing cannot compel epistemic revision in claims rooted in divine causality.

Abstract

Purpose – In curriculum studies, teaching materials are fundamental components. In the context of Islamic education, especially in pondok pesantren, kitab kuning has long been the main reference, particularly in fiqh and uṣūl al-fiqh, that according to Bruinessen represents Shafi’i school. Yet in the last few decades, Islamic transnational movement that has introduced diverse schools of thought has entered Indonesia, potentially including the educational area. However, previous studies have not touched kitab kuning at pondok pesantren in particular. This study therefore examines whether Bruinessen’s finding regarding the dominance of Shafi’i school in fiqh and uṣūl al-fiqh remains valid at pondok pesantren in South Kalimantan or has shifted, especially concerning kitab kuning. Design/methods/approach – The study employed qualitative case study, with documentation and interview in data collection. Kyais and ustādhs at five pondok pesantren salafiyah, khalafiyah, and mixed across two regencies in South Kalimantan were involved. Miles’ and Huberman’s data analysis was followed while Lincoln and Guba’s trustworthiness in terms of triangulation of methods of data collection, sources of data, member checking, an audit trail, reflexivity, and thick description were used. Findings – The study concluded that salafiyah and mixed pondok pesantren continued to teach kitab kuning of the Shafi’i school as their teaching materials in fiqh and uṣūl al-fiqh. Although some new references were introduced, they were still in Shafi’i school. In addition, the kyais and ustādhs read kitab kuning from other schools, they did not teach them to their santris citing the absence of ijāzah, and to preserve Ahlussunnah wa al-jamā’ah. They studied those kitab kuning only for personal enrichment. At pondok pesantren khalafiyah, initially the santris studied fiqh from four schools of fiqh, however later they learnt solely Shafi’i school, as available ustadzs were trained in that school. Thus, Islamic transnational movement has not touched pondok pesantren’s teaching materials. Research implications – This study was limited to two regencies in South Kalimantan. For generalization, like Bruinessen’s research, broader study is required.
