Abstract

Purpose – This study examines how the tolerant culture of the Senggarang community, rooted in its traditions and values, influences religious tolerance education in early primary education in Tanjungpinang City, Indonesia, by utilizing Bourdieu’s theory of habitus and cultural capital to clarify the impact of cultural practices in multicultural communities on early childhood education oriented towards tolerance. Design/methods/approach – This study employs a qualitative phenomenological approach, utilizing direct observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis to explore the influence of cultural practices on tolerance education. Field research engaged diverse informants from Senggarang, including elementary school teachers from early elementary education, local community members, and officials familiar with the area's historical and social dynamics, to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the community's tolerance-related practices. Findings – The findings reveal that the tolerant cultural practices in Senggarang, deeply rooted in historical and social contexts, significantly influence tolerance education among students. Children aged 6–7 years in early primary education adopt tolerance as part of the behaviors they learn through communal activities such as interfaith holiday celebrations and support for religious events. Cultural values that promote interfaith respect, evident in traditional interactions and mutual cooperation (gotong royong), are internalized by children through family and community engagement. These practices align with Pierre Bourdieu's concepts of habitus and cultural capital, demonstrating how inherited cultural norms and daily practices shape children's dispositions toward tolerance. Educators and the school environment further reinforce these practices by embedding tolerance education through routines and collaborative activities among diverse students. Research implications/limitations – This study provides valuable insights into how community culture influences school-based tolerance education. However, its findings may be less applicable to areas with different social and historical contexts. Future research could further examine the role of cultural capital and habitus in multicultural education contexts across various regions in Indonesia. Practical implications – The study highlights the importance of incorporating local cultural values into education to foster early tolerance, offering a model for using cultural practices as teaching tools in diverse communities. Originality/value – This study highlights how community culture and Bourdieu’s concepts of habitus and cultural capital enrich our understanding of tolerance education in first-grade primary school students (ages 6–7), encouraging further exploration of local cultural values to shape inclusive educational practices in multicultural societies. Abstract

The greatest challenge in the current era of globalization and modernization is to uphold and impart moral values and character to children. There are numerous cases where children lose their direction and ethics due to the influence of various media, technology, and foreign cultures. This research aims to examine the values of early childhood character education from the perspective of Malay identity principles by Tenas Effendy. The study employs a literature review method (library research). Data collection techniques involve studying literature and documentation of Tenas Effendy's writings on Malay Identity Principles. The data analysis technique used is content analysis. The research findings indicate that the values of children's character education in the Malay identity principles perspective of Tenas Effendy encompass eight aspects: religious character, honesty, hardworking nature, independence, responsibility, social concern, environmental awareness, and friendly/communicative nature. Therefore, implementing these noble values in children can help shape a strong foundation of character. This doesn't only prepare children for academic success but also builds a moral and ethical groundwork that will guide them in facing future challenges.

Abstract

This study aims to develop and examine the effectiveness of the Miniature Penyengat Mosque Educational Play Tool (APE) as a learning medium to enhance early childhood understanding of religious and moral values in the Riau Islands. The study is motivated by the limited availability of concrete, engaging, and culturally contextual religious learning media, as well as the need to strengthen moral and religious values from an early age in the context of globalization. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model, which includes analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stages. The participants consisted of 30 children aged 4–6 years from three early childhood education (PAUD) institutions, involving teachers and material and media experts as validators. The findings indicate that the Miniature Penyengat Mosque APE demonstrates very high validity, strong practicality, and significant effectiveness in improving children’s religious and moral behaviors, such as worship etiquette, discipline, cooperation, cleanliness, and politeness. Guided play–based learning using this APE provides concrete, enjoyable, and meaningful learning experiences while integrating religious values with Malay–Islamic cultural identity. Therefore, the Miniature Penyengat Mosque APE is recommended as an innovative learning medium aligned with the Merdeka Curriculum for Early Childhood Education and has strong potential for broader implementation based on local wisdom.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the role of parents in guiding early childhood interactions with artificial intelligence (AI)-based technology within the framework of digital parenting. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation involving ten parents of children aged 4–6. The findings indicate that active mediation was the most commonly applied strategy (8 out of 10 parents), though restrictive mediation remains dominant in limiting access and screen time. Co-using was the least practiced due to time constraints and low digital literacy. A key finding highlights parents' limited understanding of AI principles, which hinders reflective and educational engagement during children’s AI use. This study introduces a novel contribution by integrating parental AI literacy into the parental mediation model and proposes a theoretical modification of digital parenting. Practical implications include the need for parental AI literacy modules and child technology design that fosters active family involvement. These findings underscore the shift in digital parenting from mere technical control toward reflective guidance grounded in AI literacy. Keywords: artificial intelligence, digital parenting, early childhood

Abstract

This research was motivated by there are still children who are still not used to and show an independent attitude in the implementation of toilet training because children aged 1-3 years still do not show an independent attitude in habituating toilet training because many children use diapers, lack of parental care, lack of parental knowledge about toilet training. This study aims to determine the role of parents in toilet training habits to train the independence of children aged 1-3. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach. The study population consisted of 101 children, with a sample of 11 children. Data collection techniques through interviews, observation and documentation. Miles and Huberman's model analysis techniques through data reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusions. The findings of this study: 2 out of 11 parents have not yet played a role, 7 out of 11 parents have started to play a role, and 2 out of 11 parents have played a role in toilet training habits. The results of the study 1) parents play a role in educating toilet training in the age range of 1-3 years, 2) parents play a role in raising children not to use diapers/diapers, not to wet the bed day/night, 3) parents play a guiding role through speech and action. The habit of toilet training is carried out through several stages, namely: teaching children to squat, wash themselves, urinate/ defecate in the toilet, go to the toilet by themselves, open/put on their own pants, and take off diapers/diapers day/night.
