Abstract

HIV/AIDS remains a global health issue that demands comprehensive action, including strengthening human resource capacity at the community level. This community engagement program aimed to enhance the role of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in HIV/AIDS prevention and management through counseling skills training conducted at the Faculty of Nursing, Hasanuddin University. Nine participants from five NGOs took part in the training, which covered topics such as HIV/AIDS knowledge, health literacy, and counseling practice simulations. Evaluation was carried out through pre- and post-tests, as well as direct observation. Results showed a notable increase in participants' knowledge and adequate counseling practice skills, although gaps remained in technical competencies such as psychosocial assessment and handling complex cases. Challenges included participant absenteeism and schedule delays, affecting program effectiveness. Further structured training is needed to optimize the capacity of community counselors to support people living with HIV/AIDS professionally and sustainably.

Abstract

Researchers have often reflected on why improving community health remains a persistent challenge, and why many well-intentioned policies and interventions are often difficult to sustain or fall short in addressing complex health issues. Through the PhD journey at the University of Edinburgh, the researcher developed a deeper understanding of how community health nurses’ practice is shaped by social, cultural, and structural dynamics. This journey has also highlighted the importance of addressing the social determinants of health and adopting a critical realist lens to explore not only what happens in communities but also why, for whom, and under what conditions. This approach offers a stronger foundation for the design of effective and sustainable interventions.

Abstract

In Indonesia, the elderly with chronic illnesses have a relatively high percentage. According to the Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) results in 2018, data indicates an increase in non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and stroke among the elderly. The aging process in the elderly leads to a decline in physiological body functions, resulting in the emergence of non-communicable diseases in old age. The purpose of this community service activity is to enhance the knowledge of the elderly about chronic diseases (hypertension and type II diabetes) through a psycho-educational approach. The educational methods employed include lectures, counseling, and discussions. This activity took place on Friday, September 8, 2023, and was attended by 32 elderly individuals at the Tamalanrea Community Health Center who participated voluntarily. Based on observations, the majority of the elderly demonstrated good knowledge about chronic diseases after the question-and-answer sessions and discussions between the speakers and participants. It is hoped that through this activity, the community, especially the elderly, will gain a better understanding of chronic diseases (hypertension and type II diabetes), leading to behavioral changes and improved capabilities in identifying and preventing chronic illnesses in the future.
