Abstract

Abstract

The current COVID-19 pandemic has shaken many things. This condition makes the goat breeders of the ZCD (Zakat Community Development) program in Tanah Datar Regency demotivated because many activities and businesses are hampered. This year will plan to build a feed factory due to the assistance of the central ZCD and the establishment of business institutions. Until now, the plan is running in place because all activities that cause crowds have stopped. Sales of products, in the form of goats, also experienced significant disruptions. Moving on from these conditions, we held service activities with training and mentoring methods. The objectives of this activity are 1. They are renewing the enthusiasm and motivation of farmers in running a business, 2, providing knowledge and knowledge on how and stages of establishing a mini-feed factory, 3—providing knowledge and knowledge about the establishment of livestock business institutions. From the results of the activities obtained: (1), The COVID-19 pandemic has indeed disrupted the implementation of the ZCD program in Tanah Datar Regency (including the motivation of farmers), especially activities related to human interaction, but is currently recovering (2) Plans for establishing a mini-feed factory for implementation in 2021. However, breeders and managers better understand the stages to be carried out (3) ZCD managers already understand the plan to establish a livestock business institution to capture a reasonably large goat market opportunity from the internal of National Zakat Agency. The results of this activity suggest: (1) ZCD program activities should be re-run by applying the existing health protocols, (2) Establishment of ZCD member business institutions must be carried out immediately and recommended in the form of cooperatives.

Abstract

Ruminant livestock production plays an important role in providing animal protein sources, but faces major challenges in terms of feed utilization efficiency and environmental impact due to methane emissions. Methane produced by rumen fermentation not only contributes nearly 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions but also causes energy losses of 7-12% of total feed energy. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of gambier (Uncaria gambier) leaf extract from Pangkalan, West Sumatra, on the digestibility of fiber fractions (NDF, ADF, cellulose, hemicellulose) and methane gas production in ruminant rations. The study was conducted in vitro using the method of Tilley and Terry (1963) with a randomized group design consisting of four treatments: T0 (control without gambier extract), T1 (0.5% gambier extract), T2 (1% gambier extract), and T3 (2% gambier extract), with four replications using goat rumen fluid. Results showed that the addition of gambier extract significantly increased NDF and ADF digestibility to 64.30% and 63.77% at T3, respectively, compared to the control of 61.67% and 61.56%. Cellulose digestibility increased from 64.57% at T0 to 67.20% at T3, while hemicellulose increased from 64.78% to 67.44%. In addition, methane gas production decreased significantly from 22.45 ml/g DOM in the control to 16.67 ml/g DOM in T3, equivalent to a decrease of 25.74%. The optimal dose to increase fiber digestibility and decrease methane production was 2% gambier leaf extract (T3 treatment). Thus, gambier leaf extract from Pangkalan can be used as an effective natural feed additive to improve feed efficiency while reducing the environmental impact of ruminant farming.

Abstract

The dairy goat farming business is quite developed in Agam Regency, one of which is the Muda Mandiri farmer group in Nagari Sungai Pua, Sungai Pua District. This group has 11 members of peranakan etawa goat breeders with 30 goats. The purpose of this activity is to apply sugarcane tops fermentation technology as an alternative forage feed for ruminants to improve the feed efficiency of dairy goats. The activity method includes several stages. Fisrt, concept introduction and counselling to farmer groups on forage feed management and the benefits of sugarcane tops fermentation were conducted. Second, a demonstration of the fermentation process began with chopping sugarcane tops, mixing them with Pleurotus ostreatus mold and adding bran. This mixture was stored in an airtight container for 21 days. Third, the fermented products were tested directly as feed for dairy goats to evaluate their palatability and impact on milk production. Important results showed that although milk production was almost the same as the previous feed of field grass, fermented sugarcane tops could replace up to 30% of field grass use. This reduced the need for farmers to search for grass every day, improving time and labor efficiency in feed preparation. In conclusion, fermented sugarcane tops is an effective and easy-to-implement technology to support the provision of efficient alternative feed for dairy goat farmers, thereby helping to ease the farmer’s workload.

Abstract

One of the Muda Mandiri farmer groups located in Nagari Sungai Pua, Sungai Pua District, has 30 Peranakan Etawa goats, and this farmer group consists of 11 farmers. This group is one of the highly developed dairy goat farming businesses in Agam Regency. This community service activity aims to apply fermented tithonia technology as an alternative forage feed for ruminants to improve the feed efficiency of dairy goats. The activity method consists of several steps. First, farmer groups were taught about how to manage forage feed and the benefits of thitonia fermentation. Second, they learned the fermentation process, which starts with chopping tithonia, mixing it with inoculum (L. bulgaricus), adding molasses, and mixing it with bran. This mixture was kept in a container without air exposure for fourteen days. Third, the fermented product was tested directly as feed for dairy goats to determine how palatable it was and how much it impacted milk production. Important results showed that although milk production was almost the same as the previous feed using field grass, fermented tithonia could replace up to 30% of field grass. The farmer does not need to search for grass daily, as time and effort are spent more efficiently providing feed. In conclusion, fermented tithonia is an effective and easy-to-implement technology to help dairy goat farmers obtain a more efficient alternative feed, which eases their workload.
