Abstract

One type of accommodation that is widely found in tourist villages is homestay. Homestay is an accommodation that offers the experience of living together with locals in their homes. Homestay is a popular form of accommodation in tourist villages because it provides a different experience from other accommodations, as well as providing opportunities for tourists to interact with locals. Although homestays are in great demand by tourists, there are still some challenges in marketing them in tourist villages. One of the challenges faced by homestay marketers in tourist villages is the lack of knowledge on how to market effective homestays. In addition, homestays in tourist villages are also faced with competition with other accommodations such as hotels, villas, and other inns. The results showed that the homestay marketing strategy has not been effective enough in Tourism Villages in South Sulawesi, because homestay owners / managers and pokdarwis as homestay marketing coordinators in tourism villages have not had the right concept in their marketing. The role of information technology has not increased the effectiveness of homestay digital marketing in tourism villages in South Sulawesi due to limited digital literacy and resources.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to explore the natural and local resources that can be utilized as economic assets to alleviate extreme poverty in Kolaka Regency. A qualitative research approach was employed, gathering data through interviews with beach managers, field observations, and documentation. The findings indicate that the area's natural beauty, marine resources, and rich cultural traditions play a critical role in attracting tourists and serving as sustainable economic drivers. These resources not only enhance tourism but also provide opportunities for local communities to develop businesses and improve livelihoods. However, to ensure the continued success of tourism as a poverty alleviation tool, environmental preservation and cultural conservation must be prioritized. This includes implementing eco-friendly tourism practices that protect the natural environment while promoting local traditions. Additionally, collaboration between local communities, the government, and stakeholders is essential to create inclusive and long-term benefits. This research is expected to contribute to formulating effective tourism development strategies that can alleviate extreme poverty and improve the well-being of the local population.

Abstract

Tourism villages in Indonesia leverage Community-Based Tourism (CBT) to foster rural development, with homestays serving as a key economic driver. However, limited digital resources hinder effective marketing in remote areas. This study explores the role of Tourism Awareness Community Groups (POKDARWIS) in enhancing homestay digital marketing in Barania and Campaga villages, South Sulawesi. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were gathered through in-depth interviews with POKDARWIS members, homestay managers, and tourists, supplemented by observations and document analysis. Thematic analysis revealed POKDARWIS’s multifaceted contributions, including booking coordination, digital content creation, capacity-building training, and collaboration with local stakeholders. Social media and village websites improved homestay visibility and tourist arrivals. However, challenges such as low digital literacy, resource constraints, and funding gaps persist. The findings underscore POKDARWIS’s dual role as both a marketing facilitator and a community empowerment agent, advancing sustainable tourism. The study recommends stronger government support, targeted training, and partnerships to optimize digital marketing outcomes. By demonstrating how grassroots organizations harness digital tools, this research enriches CBT literature and offers practical insights for inclusive rural tourism development.
