That information is phrases or utterances including prohibited terms. Data collecting methods are documentary study by recording video transcripts. Data analyses made use of the Miles and Huberman framework, which included data display, data reduction, and conclusion formulation. General data gathering techniques were theoretical and source triangulation data validation. Research on taboo words reveals that 3% of them are sexual taboos, namely Freak Off, Commercial Sex, and Masturbation. While legal and crime accounted for 6 percent, reference blackmail, narcotics, ketamine, and extortion; it also included violent forbidden terms, 3 percent drag, kick, and gun occurrences. Abstract

This study investigates the portrayal of women in the Indonesian film “Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap” movie through a sociolinguistics study. The research aims to explore how language and dialogue in the movie reflect and reinforce societal attitudes towards women, examining the representation of female characters and their interactions within the narrative. The collected data are analyzed by applying qualitative and descriptive method. The dialogues undergo thematic analysis to identify recurring themes related to gender roles, power dynamics, and language use. This approach allows for a comprehensive understanding of how women’s speech in the film reflects or diverges from established sociolinguistic patterns. Triangulation is employed by comparing the film's portrayal of women with existing literature on gender roles in Indonesian society and media, ensuring the validity of the findings (Baxter, 2019; Sunderland, 2020). The results indicate that the portrayal of women in Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap is shaped by cultural influences and prominent themes such as 5 Gender Roles as a woman, 5 Emotional Attachment, and 10 Gender Conflict and Tension. However in the film Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap by comparing woman image and man image it can be found that woman are often portrayed as inferior, weak, and marginalized, while men appear as superior, strong, and dominant. There are some symbolic resistances, but man’s power still cannot be fully seized by woman. As an obedient being, Sarma always does whatever her parents told her to do and feels she must obey completely. Never in her life does she disobey her parents. She then compared what her life to her brothers’. The result come to the fact that the brothers were able to do something freely and disobey their arents because they are men, not a woman like Sarma. The film portrays women as individuals expected to obey men’s commands. Women are also portrayed as being of lower status than men. The patriarchy in this movie is also very noticeable. This portrayal reflects and potentially reinforces societal views of patriarchy and gender hierarchy in Indonesian media

Abstract

Abstract: This paper discusses the use of Socratic questioning method (SQM) to enhance students’ critical thinking capability. The method used in this research was descriptive – the method that describes a given state of affairs as fully and carefully as possible (Fraenkel, 1990:11). Twelve students of English Department S-1 Program sitting in the 4th semester participate in this research. This SQM is applied in learning process for the subject of Academic Presentation. Data were gathered through the two instruments, classroom observation and closed-ended questionnaires. The questionnaire consisted of ten items divided into six parts: understanding of SQM, critical thinking capabilities, application of SQM, effectiveness of SQM, perception of learning using SQM, and effects on critical thinking capability The results of the study indicate that: 1) the questions posed by the students are in level of analysis, 2) the contents of the questions posed cover identifying, relating, analyzing, and making inferences of the topics under discussion, and 3) the benefits of using SQM include provoking deep analysis, promoting critical thinking, making the one being asked think hard, maintaining learning motivation, and making students feel confident during the discussion sessions. The implementation of the Socratic Questioning Method (SQM) in the "Academic Presentation" course at Widyatama University has led to positive changes in students' learning experiences. SQM encourages students to engage in thoughtful dialogue, ask meaningful questions, and think critically. The findings suggest that SQM can enhance students' critical thinking abilities, foster deep analysis, and improve confidence and motivation in academic discussions.Key Words: Socratic Questioning Method (SQM), critical thinking, learning process

Abstract

This research examines the use of conceptual metaphors in Manchester United football chants through a cognitive linguistics lens, analyzing how metaphorical language constructs fan identity and collective emotion. Understanding metaphor in sports discourse is crucial for comprehending the psychological and social dimensions of fandom. The study aims to identify the types and cognitive functions of conceptual metaphors in the club’s chants. Using qualitative metaphor analysis, the research analyzes 32 chants from match recordings, fan forums, and official archives (2010–2023), applying Lakoff and Johnson’s (1980) framework of conceptual metaphor theory. Data is categorized into structural, ontological, and orientational metaphors, with additional analysis of their frequency and contextual usage. Findings reveal a predominance of war metaphors , reflecting the conceptualization of football as conflict, alongside kinship and journey metaphors , which reinforce group identity and shared purpose. The study concludes that these metaphorical systems shape fan cognition, emotional engagement, and cultural memory. This analysis enhances our understanding of how language functions in sports communities, offering insights into the cognitive underpinnings of fan behavior and the role of metaphor in constructing collective identity.

Abstract

This study analyzes the phenomenon of code mixing in TikTok video content from the account @salshabilazzahraa, better known as the “Jajan Bareng Lala” account, using a sociolinguistic approach. The purpose of this study is to explore and identify the types of code mixing using Muysken's (2000) theory, namely Insertion, Alternation, and Congruent Lexicalization. Additionally, it classifies their functions according to Appel & Muysken (1987), which include Referential, Expressive, Directive, Metalinguistic, Phatic, and Poetic functions. Using a qualitative research method, data was collected through transcription, classification, and analysis of selected videos. The results of the study indicate that the Insertion type is the most dominant type of code mixing. This indicates that the insertion of foreign words or phrases into the structure of the Indonesian language can be done easily without altering the grammatical structure. This strategy is considered more interesting and in line with the current communication style that is more understandable to many people. Congruent Lexicalization is the second most common type, while Alternation is only found in a limited number of cases in this study. Meanwhile, in terms of function, the referential function is the most dominant. This shows that speakers use code mixing to convey meaning more accurately, efficiently, and contextually. Additionally, the expressive function is also frequently found in this study, particularly for expressing personal opinions, emotions, and self-identity. Meanwhile, the directive function is very rarely found, and the metalinguistic, phatic, and poetic functions are not found at all, as the content in this study is descriptive rather than interactive. This study concludes that code mixing plays an important role in TikTok video content as a means of reinforcing meaning, expression, self-identity, and building closeness with viewers.

Abstract

The research investigates face-threatening acts (FTAs) in the fourth vice-presidential election debate in Indonesia, applying a pragmatic approach to analyze how strategies and acts used impact the candidates’ electability and credibility. This study also focused on the word choices during the debate that can be considered rude or put the other candidates in an uncomfortable situation and how this affects the flow of debate. Qualitative procedures including display data, quoting, and authentication were used in the data analysis process. By applying the politeness theory of Brown and Levinson, the study classifies and divides the FTAs into positive and negative faces. According to the study, the three candidates regularly use strategies meant to harm the public perceptions of their opponents in order to influence voter opinions and affect election results. The research offers insights into the purpose of communication tactics in political debates and their broader impact on political discourse and election outcomes by comprehending the dynamics of FTAs in this high-stakes environment.
