Abstract

This study aims to investigate the impact of social media on changing public perceptions in the Jessica Mirna Cyanide-Infused Coffee Case. The research method employed is descriptive, with the primary data source from TikTok, the official account @Netflix Indonesia, which released a documentary trailer titled 'Ice Cold: Murder, Coffee, and Jessica Wongso' in September 2023. The study applies Ruth Wodak's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) theory along with other social media theories. The utilization of hashtags, trends, and algorithms on social media significantly impacts the broader dissemination of the case, leading to its resurgence in public discourse. Initially, social media was dominated by the hashtag #JusticeForMirna, which later transitioned to #JusticeForJessica following the release of the aforementioned documentary. This analysis also involves understanding language, framing, comments, and public responses, which influence the shaping of public opinion on the case. The research findings highlight shifts in public perception due to the influence of the aforementioned factors and public distrust in the case's transparency, attributed to insufficient evidence in court and newly revealed facts. This has sparked debates and positioned Jessica in two possibilities, either as the perpetrator or as a victim of the justice system. These factors have proven to be crucial in shaping diverse perspectives and generating opinion shifts among the public. Academically, this study provides in-depth insights into the complexity of social media's role in shaping public opinions on controversial issues. This is important given the rapid development of social media and online interactions, emphasizing the transformative power of discourse, narrative framing, and the dynamic nature of public perception

Abstract

This research investigates the usage of compounding in social media, specifically the utilization of “EL” as a morphological part of posts by Extra Time Indonesia on X (previously Twitter). This research aims to categorize the types and meanings of compounds formed with “EL” by analyzing data through the framework of morphological theory by Katamba and Plag. Qualitative descriptive methodology, which Creswell defines, is applied in this research to analyze language utilization within the social media setting. 10 data samples were analyzed based on the presence of “EL” as a compound part. The results indicate that 6 data are Exocentric compounds (60%), and 4 data are Endocentric compounds (40%), with no data of Copulative compounds identified (0%). Regarding the meanings, 4 data are Transparent meaning (40%), while 6 data are non-transparent meaning (60%), indicating that the interpretation does not always rely on contextual or cultural knowledge. Ultimately, this research demonstrates how social media users create meaning and identity through morphological creativity, especially on X. Abstract

This community service program aimed to provide training on the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to improve TOEFL scores among twelfth-grade students at SMAN 19 Bandung. The method employed in this program involved training and mentoring, which consisted of two main stages: the implementation stage (preparation and training) and the evaluation stage. During the preparation stage, the team coordinated with the school, developed training materials, and set up AI-based learning tools. In the implementation stage, students were trained to use various AI applications and platforms, such as interactive chatbots, automated grammar correction tools, and AI-driven TOEFL simulations. Through intensive mentoring, participants were encouraged to practice their reading, listening, speaking, and writing skills with the assistance of AI technologies. The evaluation results indicated that students gained significant knowledge of TOEFL learning strategies as well as the ability to effectively utilize AI to enhance their English proficiency. Furthermore, the program fostered greater motivation and self-confidence among students in preparing for the actual TOEFL test. Therefore, this community service initiative is expected to make a meaningful contribution to improving the quality of English language education at the high school level.
