Abstract

The virtual environments have provided users with varied degrees of digital transformation, despite the fact that users are non-permanent and unconnected. To further assist the digital transition in every element of physical life, the term Metaverse has been coined. It cannot be avoided that language, furthermore linguistics, has involvement to the word framing and word creation within Metaverse. This research is purposed to determine some typical new-word formations or neologisms that impact to the establishment of terminologies within Metaverse. On the other hand, cultural aspect also becomes the concern towards this new universe; since people need to be well-informed in the term of consequence and benefits. The method of the research applied qualitative method and distributional method by Segmenting Immediate Constituents Techniques; which means the technique of dividing a construction of direct elements which form the construction. Three main theories used in this paper are neologism by Kilmer (2020), social disruption by Kumbara et al. (2020) and Metaverse by Mystakidis (2019). The paper puts three different terminologies that are analyzed using linguistic and cultural perspective. Those three words are Persistent Virtual World (PVW), blockchain and NFT that massively arise in the Metaverse terminologies. Based on the analysis, it can be inferred that those terminologies are categorized to morphological and semantic neologism; which also includes abbreviation and broadening. The notion of an immersive Internet as a massive, unified, persistent, and shared realm is at the core of Metaverse.

Abstract

This research delves into the collocation and semantic analysis of the words "Mom" and "Dad" in two novels, "How to Talk to Mom?" and "How to Talk to Dad?", authored by a teenage male writer, Alec Greven. The primary objective is to investigate the frequency of occurrence of these parental terms and explore their semantic preferences and prosody within the context of dictions used in the novels. The study uses a mixed-method design, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative approaches to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the research topic. Using corpus linguistic methods, the study examines the frequency of the words "Mom" and "Dad" in each novel, revealing that "Mom" occurs more frequently than "Dad." Through concordance hits, the collocational patterns of the parental terms are analyzed, shedding light on the contexts in which they are commonly used. The collocation analysis demonstrates that "Dad" is frequently associated with family, friendship, and engaging activities, while "Mom" is linked to family, household chores, and maternal preferences. Furthermore, the research explores the semantic prosody of "Mom" and "Dad" revealing that "Dad" is portrayed more positively compared to "Mom."

Abstract

The post-pandemic situation has triggered a seismic shift in the education landscape, forcing educational institutions worldwide to transition to online learning platforms. Understanding students' perspectives towards this abrupt transformation is crucial for improving the quality of online education. This study employs sentiment analysis techniques, specifically Word Frequency Analysis, to gain insights into students' sentiments and opinions concerning online learning. Using a dataset of student responses collected through surveys and open-ended questions, the researchers conducted a comprehensive analysis of the words and phrases frequently used by students when describing their experiences with online learning. Through the systematic identification of prominent words and their frequencies, this research provides a valuable overview of the prevailing sentiments, concerns, and areas of satisfaction among students. The findings reveal a nuanced picture of students' attitudes. While positive sentiments such as “nyaman”, “baik”, and “responsif" are prevalent, there are also concerns and challenges highlighted, including 'isolation,' 'technical issues,' and 'communication difficulties.' Furthermore, the analysis uncovers variations in sentiment based on demographic factors, course types, and prior experience with online education. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of students' sentiments towards online learning, offering educators and policymakers valuable insights for enhancing the online learning experience. The Word Frequency Analysis methodology employed in this study proves to be a powerful tool for efficiently distilling the sentiments expressed in large datasets of qualitative responses, providing a foundation for further qualitative and quantitative investigations in the field of online education.

This research uses qualitative methods to analyze data and use descriptive methods to explain the data. The object of this research is the written register terms found in Akulaku Marketplace apps. The theories used to classify the data are according to Halliday and Hasan's (1989) theory of register types and Jakobson's (1960) theory of language functions. According to this research, there are 90 data analyzed. The data is categorized into two types of registers, they are closed register 41 data (45,5%) and open register 49 data (54,5%). The functions of the register are referential function 14 data (15,5%), emotive function 20 data (22,2%), conative function 27 data (30%), phatic function 11 data (12,2%), poetic function 11 data or (12.2%) and metalingual function 7 data or (7,7%). Abstract

Communication is an important thing especially for humans to give information to each other, and humans use conversation to convey something with the tool language. Discourse analysis as part of linguistics is the study of how language is spoken or written. In this research, the researcher analyzes the language spoken by Maudy Ayunda and Jessie Choi from one of Maudy’s videos on YouTube. People should make a good sentence in a conversation to make it easier to understand others. In conversation there are two or more people that talk to each other, it is a good conversation when they reply to each other. Another thing that makes a good sentence is grammatical cohesion which is part of discourse analysis. Grammatical cohesion is the study of how a component of grammar in a sentence is according to the rules. Grammatical cohesion has four types, there are conjunction, reference, ellipsis, and substitution. The theory of grammatical cohesion that the researcher uses is from Halliday and Hasan (1976) with the qualitative descriptive method to explain more detail about each type of grammatical cohesion. From 30 pieces of data that the researcher found in the conversation, there are 14 personal references, 5 additive conjunctions, 4 demonstrative references, 3 causal conjunctions, 2 verbal substitutions, 1 comparative reference, and 1 temporal conjunction. The most frequent grammatical cohesion in Maudy Ayunda’s video is personal references.
