Abstract

Code-switching is a common linguistic strategy in bilingual or multilingual communities, particularly in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. This study investigates the pedagogical functions of code-switching employed by teachers in EFL classroom interactions at MAN 1 Polewali Mandar. Using a descriptive qualitative methodology, data were collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with an English teacher and two classes. The findings reveal that code-switching serves five key functions: emphasizing important points, clarifying questions, checking vocabulary comprehension, reinforcing requests, and checking understanding. These functions facilitate better communication, foster engagement, and enhance students' learning outcomes. The study highlights the strategic value of code-switching in overcoming linguistic barriers, ensuring inclusivity, and fostering an effective learning environment in multilingual classrooms. Practical implications suggest that teachers should utilize code-switching purposefully to address students' needs while gradually encouraging active use of English.

Abstract

Kemampuan berbahasa Inggris saat ini sangat krusial khususnya bagi mereka yang berkecimpung di dunia pendidikan seperti siswa, mahasiswa, guru, dosen, dan peneliti. Itulah sebabnya untuk mendaftar dan melulusi suatu program studi, perguruan tinggi umumnya memberlakukan test Bahasa Inggris, salah satu bentuknya adalah TOEFL. Atas dasar ini, tim dosen Program Studi Tadris Bahasa Inggris Sekolah Tinggi Agama Islam Negeri Majene mengadakan kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat berupa pelatihan listening TOEFL Paper Based Test kepada siswa SMA Negeri 1 Majene. Ada tiga tujuan pelatihan ini: pertama, siswa kelas XII SMA Negeri 1 Majene memiliki pemahaman tentang konsep TOEFL; kedua, siswa peserta pelatihan mengetahui tips dan trik meraih skor maksimal pada Listening Section TOEFL PBT; dan ketiga, siswa memiliki motivasi untuk belajar TOEFL sebagai upaya persiapan melanjutkan pendidikan ke jenjang perguruan tinggi. Pelatihan berlangusng selama 150 menit, dilakukan selama satu hari pada tanggal 15 Agustus 2022 melalui metode ceramah, simulasi, dan evaluasi. Sebanyak 100 siswa kelas XII SMA Negeri 1 Majene berpartisipasi sebagai peserta pelatihan. Berdasarkan hasil evaluasi program diketahui bahwa pelatihan ini efektif dalam memperkenalkan konsep TOEFL kepada siswa kelas XI SMA Negeri 1 Majene. Selain itu, pelatihan ini mampu membantu siswa mengetahui dan mempraktikan tips dan trik meraih skor maksimal pada Listening Section. Evaluasi juga menunjukkan siswa peserta pelatihan memiliki motivasi untuk belajar TOEFL sebagai upaya persiapan melanjutkan pendidikan ke jenjang universitas.

Abstract

Vocational high school students in Indonesia are expected to develop English proficiency aligned with workplace demands, yet grammar-focused instruction often limits their communicative competence. Role-play, as an interactive and learner-centered approach, offers potential to enhance speaking skills in vocational contexts. Through a service-learning framework, this community engagement project involved lecturers, students, and teachers in collaboratively implementing role-play activities based on authentic scenarios in hospitality and fashion design. Students engaged in simulated real-life interactions that promoted active participation, peer collaboration, and pragmatic language use. Data from observations, questionnaires, and student reflections indicate that role-play significantly improved engagement, motivation, and speaking confidence. Quantitative results show 54.5% of students found the method engaging, 75.8% viewed the materials as clear, and 78.1% recognized the PkM team’s effective delivery. Qualitative feedback highlighted gains in vocabulary, practical communication skills, and readiness to apply English beyond the classroom. Embedding role-play into vocational English instruction thus addresses gaps in speaking practice and supports the development of workplace-relevant communication. This study contributes to ongoing discussions of role-play as an effective pedagogical strategy in ESL/EFL classrooms, particularly within vocational education where practical language use is essential.

Abstract

Youth is the potential speaker in the future and plays a significant role in language maintenance and vitality. This study aims to investigate the role, attitude, and language skills of Mandarese youth in maintaining their local language. It applied quantitative research and involved five representatives from eighteen districts in Polewali Mandar regency. The results indicate that the youth's role in preserving Mandarese culture, including its language and ability to use it, is deteriorating. The average percentage of their proficiency in the Mandarese language is 48.5%, while the percentage for the actual role is 27.5%. However, given that the youth still have a positive attitude toward that language, which is approximately 78.75% on average, the effort to save Mandarese from the definitively endangered situation is possible.

Abstract

This study was conducted to analyze the use of standard costs as a means to increase efficiency in production costs in the legging convection business. The background of this study is the inefficiency of its costs caused by waste of raw materials, use of working hours that exceed the limit, and an increase in factory overhead costs. The method approach chosen is qualitative research with a case study technique. Primary data was obtained through direct interviews with the owner of the convection business, while secondary data was collected through observation and documentation of the production process. The findings of the study indicate that there is a significant difference between standard costs and actual costs, which is IDR 11,000 for each product unit. The standard cost for each legging unit is recorded at IDR 50,000, while the actual cost reaches IDR 61,000. This inefficiency, if multiplied by the number of products produced each day of 100 units, will result in a waste of IDR 1,100,000 in a day or around IDR 27,500,000 in a month. These results indicate that the application of a standard cost system can provide a clear picture of the production cost structure, identify sources of waste, and play a role in increasing operational efficiency. Therefore, standard costs can be used as an effective cost control tool in convection production management

Abstract

This research explores the impact of To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee on undergraduate students’ cultural understanding, focusing on themes of racial prejudice, empathy, moral development, and social justice. Using Focus Group Discussions (FGD) as the primary data collection method, the study gathered insights from 30 students enrolled in an educational literature course, English Education Study Program STAIN Majene. The findings revealed that the novel significantly enhanced students’ awareness of racial inequalities, prompting them to draw connections between the novel’s historical context and modern-day issues such as systemic racism and social justice movements like Black Lives Matter. The study also highlighted the novel's role in fostering empathy and emotional engagement, particularly through the character development of Scout Finch and her moral growth. Furthermore, the novel encouraged students to reflect on their own cultural biases, leading to increased self-awareness and a commitment to addressing social inequalities. The research emphasizes the ongoing relevance of To Kill a Mockingbird in contemporary education, demonstrating its ability to promote critical thinking, moral courage, and cultural empathy. The study suggests that literature plays a vital role in addressing societal issues and fostering a more inclusive, socially conscious generation

Abstract

This research was motivated by the lack of community political participation in Margahurip village. The method used in this research is a descriptive method with a qualitative approach and data collection techniques through observation, interviews and documentation. Based on the research results, it shows that the Village Consultative Body (BPD) as a legislative institution at the village level plays an active role in socializing the importance of political participation to the community by holding various activities, such as citizen forums, open discussions and seminars, to increase community political awareness. The obstacles faced by the Village Consultative Body (BPD) in increasing community political participation ahead of the 2024 general election in Margahurip village are differences in educational and economic backgrounds, political apathy, lack of access to information, BPD's internal constraints, unsupportive government policies, and money practices. politics and difficulty determining the right time for socialization. The solution implemented by the Village Consultative Body (BPD) to overcome obstacles in increasing community political participation ahead of the 2024 general election in Margahurip village includes direct outreach in crowded places, the use of digital technology, and increasing communitybased activities. BPD also seeks to educate the public about the negative impacts of money politics and strengthen its supervisory function. Collaboration with other institutions is also a focus for BPD in overcoming obstacles to political participation.

Abstract

Pendidikan dasar memiliki peran penting sebagai landasan dalam membentuk karakter, kemampuan literasi, serta keterampilan abad ke-21 yang dibutuhkan anak untuk menghadapi berbagai tantangan di masa depan. Namun, sejumlah sekolah dasar di wilayah pinggiran perkotaan, seperti Desa Srimukti, masih menghadapi keterbatasan dalam mengoptimalkan fungsi sekolah sebagai ruang belajar yang holistik. Melalui program BSI Explore 2025, mahasiswa melaksanakan kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat di Desa Srimukti, Kabupaten Bekasi, dengan tujuan meningkatkan literasi, kreativitas, serta nilai sosial siswa sekolah dasar melalui pendekatan pembelajaran aktif berbasis pengalaman (service learning). Program ini berlangsung di SDN Srimukti 01 selama tiga minggu, mencakup berbagai aktivitas seperti pembelajaran kreatif, literasi berbasis konteks lokal, pelatihan bagi wali murid, serta pemberdayaan ibu-ibu PKK. Hasil kegiatan memperlihatkan peningkatan motivasi dan keterlibatan siswa dalam proses belajar, bertambahnya pemahaman orang tua terhadap kebutuhan pendidikan anak, serta terjalinnya hubungan sosial yang lebih erat antara mahasiswa dan warga desa. Kegiatan ini menunjukkan bahwa kolaborasi lintas elemen mampu memperkuat ekosistem pendidikan dasar di wilayah semirural secara berkelanjutan.
