Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This study critically examines the interrelated phenomena of fundamentalism and radicalism, focusing on their conceptual foundations, socio-political functions, and ambivalent impacts within contemporary Indonesian society. Drawing on a qualitative, literature-based methodology, the research engages religious texts, academic discourse, and socio-political theory to explore how these ideologies emerge in response to structural inequality, moral disorientation, and identity-based exclusion. Rather than reducing fundamentalism and radicalism to extremist threats, the study analyzes them as complex, context-dependent responses to perceived injustice and cultural fragmentation. The findings reveal that both ideologies possess dual potentials: they can foster moral solidarity, community resilience, and ethical critique, yet they also risk producing intolerance, exclusion, and authoritarianism particularly when politicized or absolutized. Root causes such as economic marginalization, epistemic insecurity, and elite manipulation are identified as key drivers of ideological entrenchment. The study concludes by emphasizing the need for nuanced, justice-oriented responses that address the structural conditions underlying ideological radicalization, and calls for future research grounded in lived experience, interdisciplinary analysis, and civic ethics.

Abstract

Due to the rapid development of information technology, the world is increasingly open. This causes the people of the world be intensely connected to each other. The diversity of cultures, beliefs, and religious practices is becoming more open. If society is not educated about the importance of diversity awareness, then conflict can occur. This study discusses the thoughts of Moh. Qasim Mathar on contemporary theological issues and his contribution to building theological awareness in the city of Makassar. The data collection method was carried out through an in-depth study of his thoughts (content analysis) which were published periodically in the mass media through the Jendela Langit column in the Fajar Newspaper, as well as through in-depth interviews with a number of sources. The results of the study confirm that Qasim Mathar offers valuable insights into the importance of building an inclusive theology and maintaining pluralism in the midst of urban society to ensure the presence of harmony and coexistence of pluralistic, heterogeneous, and dynamic urban society. This study also reveals how Qasim Mathar's thoughts contribute to presenting theological awareness in the midst of urban society. The presence of religious dialogue spaces in several institutions such as in MUI, Postgraduate Program, Cadar Garis Lucu Community, House of Philosophy, and Matahari Islamic Boarding School Foundation is the real evidence of Qasim Mathar's contribution to urban society. The findings of this study indicate that Mathar's thoughts provide a framework for understanding the flexibility and resilience of theology in facing modern challenges, and highlight the importance of contextualizing religious values in the socio-cultural realities of urban society.

Abstract

The contemporary era faces a profound crisis of identity and meaning, often characterized by nihilism, which challenges individuals to forge personal meaning in a world increasingly devoid of inherent value. This study investigates the genealogy of Friedrich Nietzsche's thought on authentic life, comparing it with the Islamic concept of Insan Kamil within the Sufi tradition to address modern alienation. Adopting a qualitative library research design, the study uses interpretation and comparative analysis of primary philosophical and key Islamic literature. This method enables in-depth examination of their conceptual convergences and divergences. The research finds that despite distinct ontological foundations, both Nietzsche's Ubermensch and the Islamic Insan Kamil emphasize self-examination, conscious living, and the active creation of meaning. Nietzsche's critique of inherited morality resonates with Islamic teachings against blind imitation and hypocrisy, while his call for authentic self-assertion parallels Sufi principles of ego-struggle and spiritual purification. This comparative analysis offers novel frameworks for understanding and potentially mitigating contemporary issues like burnout, toxic positivity, and spiritual emptiness. The study concludes that both philosophies provide robust pathways toward genuine authenticity and purpose, underscoring the urgent need for conscious, responsible living in a rapidly changing world.

Abstract

To Sallang is a term addressed to minority Muslims who live in Toraja. Even though they are a minority, they can live side by side, without losing their Islamic identity. This research aims to find out To Sallang's resilience strategy to survive among the mainstream religions and customs of the Toraja people who are predominantly Christian. In addition, it also aims to explore religious aspects that can strengthen To Sallang community to survive and adapt to a multicultural society. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The research results show that To Sallang manages to maintain their social identity as a native of Toraja descent, as well as negotiate personal identity as a Muslim community by adapting their genius and creative assimilation to universal religious values and local wisdom (indigenous knowledge). Through theological concepts such as fitrah-sunnatullah (natural law), hablum min al-nas (social interaction), hurmatu al-takrim (respect and honor), and al-ma'ruf (values of goodness and wisdom that are rooted in the traditions of society) synchronized with local wisdom values such as sikamali (love-miss each other), siangga' (mutual respect), and siangkaran (help each other), To Sallang can present a comprehensive picture of religiosity that accommodates religious aspirations with cultural characteristics. To Sallang strategy could be the best practice and reference to build religious and cultural co-existence since they can survive with their Islamic identity and local wisdom to live together in a multicultural society. It can also be a blueprint for religious and cultural harmony in overcoming potential conflicts caused by ethnic and religious differences.

Abstract

This research aims to delves into the survival strategies of Islam Garassik adherents within the diverse context of Tana Toraja society in South Sulawesi. Islam Garassik is not only a subculture in Torajan culture, but also a double minority group. They are not only a minority within the mainstream of Torajan culture but also within the Islamic community itself. This qualitative research employs an interpretative phenomenological approach within Tana Toraja Regency, specifically in Gandangbatu Sillanan Sub-district. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The research results show that Islam Garassik is an emerging form of Muslim religiosity in Tana Toraja, South Sulawesi, particularly in Lembang Garassik and Gandangbatu Sillanan sub-districts. This phenomenon combines Islamic teachings with local values, showing Islamic syncretism that is friendly to local traditions. Garassik Islam was born out of interactions with Bugis merchants in Mebali, a traditional market, and was influenced by the long and intense history of struggle between religious and cultural institutions in South Sulawesi. As a multiple minority group, Garassik Islam adherents face social exclusion that pushes them to defend their existential identity and values, including religious understanding and ritual practices. In their defense strategy, they negotiate their identity by integrating religious values and traditions, using Sufistic narratives, and interacting with other Muslim groups. This strategy allows them to maintain their religious identity and cultural diversity, establish harmonious relations with the surrounding community, and provide space for the growth of Islam in the rich cultural context of Tana Toraja.
