Abstract

This study aims to examine: 1) The philosophy of wedding day selection in the Mappettu Ada Bugis tradition of Punggur Village; 2) The practice of wedding day selection in this tradition; and 3) The 'Urf review of wedding day selection in this tradition. Employing a qualitative research method with a sociological approach, this research is a field study. Primary data were obtained through interviews with Bugis tribal leaders, Bugis community members, and religious leaders, while secondary data were sourced from relevant literature. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, presentation, and verification, with data validity ensured through member checks and triangulation. The research results indicate that: 1) Wedding day selection in the Mappettu Ada tradition is usually done during the engagement period involving the family; 2) Village leaders in Punggur have various versions in determining the wedding day, either using hereditary books or the symbol of 'twelve stars'; 3) In the 'Urf review, this tradition can be classified as a valid 'urf if viewed as a form of effort, but it can become an invalid 'urf if linked to beliefs about safety or fate that contradict Islamic law.

Abstract

Abstract. This study highlights the effectiveness of the Time Zone in English Language (Ti-ZEL) program in improving speaking abilities among academic staff at one of the public universities in Pontianak, Indonesia. This was a mixed-method study that included some participants with provoked tests and treatments. Other forms of observation and interviews were conducted to evaluate the overall obstacles and success factors of the Ti-ZEL program. The program significantly improved speaking abilities with measurable progress (p < 0.001). The findings underscore the importance of providing opportunities and supportive environments for English practice within habituation programs. Success factors included respondents' basic English skills, an engaging and practical approach, and consistent commitment. Challenges included technical and non-technical barriers, limited proficiency, internal factors (job exhaustion, mental strain), and external distractions (workload, other activities). This cultivated approach greatly governs the level of skill improvement in speaking English. This strongly concludes the necessity of enhancing the English language skill among the academic staff of the university using the Ti-ZEL habituation model. Implementing this approach to the academic staff was new and at first unfamiliar but it proved to be successful. Keywords: Ti-ZEL, English habituation program, speaking abilities, academic staff

Abstract

This research aims to examine the issue of bilingual learning ecosystems (BLE) in industry-based technology vocational schools. This study is interesting because it becomes an academic effort in overcoming learning difficulties in vocational school students, primarily in setting English learning time and mastering the particular skills of global competitive industrial technology. Using descriptive qualitative research that includes a series of observational data collection, interviews, and documentation, the authors discover the concept of BLE based on school perspective and BLE implementation in the learning process. This study concludes that BLE can be prepared in English and non-English courses by involving school biotic and abiotic elements through collaborative teaching. BLE also supports scientific integration in vocation learning at the secondary level, which has implications for increasing study hours and increasing enrichment of English material that is specific to industry technology vocation students outside of hours that have been scheduled. It is believed that BLE can support the achievement of enhancing English skills with specific goals as well.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the practice of ijarah (leasing) in rental housing agreements and to analyze such practice based on the Compilation of Sharia Economic Law (KHES), specifically regarding ijarah contracts for rental houses built on land owned by a third party. The research employs a qualitative method with a field study design and an empirical approach. Primary data were collected through interviews with ten informants—five landlords and five tenants—in the Waduk Permai area of Pontianak City. Secondary data were obtained from books and journals to support and strengthen the findings. Data collection techniques included interviews and documentation, and data validity was ensured through triangulation. The findings show that: 1) Rental agreements for houses in Waduk Permai are conducted orally, without any written contract or formal written ijarah agreement. The researcher also found that landlords did not clearly disclose at the outset of the agreement that the land under the rental house was not their own property. 2) According to KHES Article 303, the lessor in an ijarah contract must be the owner of the property, their authorized representative, or a legal guardian. However, in the observed cases, the lessors did not meet any of these conditions stipulated in KHES Article 303, raising concerns about the validity of the ijarah contracts in this context.
