Abstract

The standard of perfection illustrated in Istri Sempurna short story is embodied by a gynoid. However, this portrayal of perfection presents a dilemma in itself. This study focuses on the concept of an ideal life depicted in the short story Istri Sempurna. However, the existing literature review reveals a research gap, specifically that no research has discussed the value of perfection as portrayed in the short story Istri Sempurna through Derrida's perspective.  The data collection technique in this study was carried out by reading and understanding the short story Istri Sempurna several times to obtain an overview of its themes and characters. This study attempts to apply Derrida's deconstruction principles, such as différance and binary opposition, to analyze how meanings in the text can shift and contradict each other. To ensure the validity and reliability of the study, data triangulation was carried out by comparing the results of the text analysis with relevant literature.  The results of the study found that the concept of perfection depicted in Istri Sempurna short story is an ambiguity surrounding the idea of perfection, which shows that what is considered ideal is not necessarily the same as true satisfaction or happiness.  The findings of this study are expected to provide a new perspective on how the notion of perfection is constructed and deconstructed within contemporary Indonesian literature. Future research is recommended to explore similar themes using other poststructuralist approaches to enrich the discourse on gender, technology, and ideality in literary studies

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the representation of the female protagonist’s lifestyle in Berliana Kimberly’s novel Laut Tengah through Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of practice, especially habitus, capital, and field. The novel portrays Haia, a high‑achieving Muslim student who negotiates modernity, religiosity, and family pressure, yet her lifestyle practices have rarely been analyzed from a Bourdieusian sociological perspective. Using a qualitative descriptive method, this research takes Laut Tengah (2024) as the material object and focuses on the construction of Haia’s lifestyle as reflected in narrative descriptions, dialogues, and everyday scenes. Data were collected through close reading and note‑taking, then analyzed using an interactive model involving data reduction, matrix‑based data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal three interrelated lifestyle configurations—independent, simple, and modern—emerging from the interaction between limited economic capital, high cultural capital as an outstanding student, and symbolic capital derived from a religio‑modern image. These configurations function as symbolic strategies for negotiating family‑based symbolic violence, gaining legitimacy in academic and urban spaces, and articulating a modern Muslim female identity within the demands of class and popular culture.

Abstract

Consumer culture increasingly shapes modern society by redefining consumption as a marker of identity, status, and social distinction rather than merely fulfilling material needs. This phenomenon is critically represented in Home Sweet Loan by Almira Bastari, a contemporary Indonesian novel that portrays urban life immersed in symbolic consumption. This study aims to analyze the representation of consumer culture in the novel through Jean Baudrillard’s theoretical framework, particularly the concepts of sign value, simulacra, and hyperreality. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the research uses repeated close readings of the text to collect data in the form of narrative excerpts, which are then systematically categorized and analyzed using content analysis techniques. The findings reveal that consumer culture in Home Sweet Loan operates through the dominance of sign value, where luxury goods function as symbols of social identity and status. Simulacra emerge in the portrayal of urban spaces and lifestyles that prioritize appearance over lived reality, while hyperreality is manifested through glamorous images of success that obscure socioeconomic disparities. These dynamics demonstrate how consumption shapes interpersonal relationships and self-perception within a materialistic urban society. This study contributes to literary and cultural studies by extending Baudrillard’s consumer culture theory to contemporary Indonesian popular literature, highlighting literature’s role in reflecting and critiquing modern consumerist ideology. The study concludes that Home Sweet Loan not only mirrors consumer culture but also invites critical reflection on the social consequences of identity construction through consumption.

Abstract

This study examines the construction of the perfect woman in Laksmi Pamuntjak's novel, Selaput Biru, through the perspective of Elaine Showalter's gynocriticism. The background of the study is based on the persistent strong cultural and social pressures on the ideal image of women in Indonesia, reflected in literary works and everyday life. The purpose of the study is to analyze how the novel, Selaput Biru, represents the perfect woman and to explore the renegotiation of this concept through the narratives of the main characters. This study is a qualitative descriptive study, using data sources in the form of phrases, words, and sentences in the novel, Selaput Biru. The data analysis technique used was content analysis, and to ensure data validity, the researcher used data triangulation. The results show that the representation of the perfect woman in the novel, Selaput Biru, emphasizes the importance of women's experiences, acknowledges complexity and imperfection, and resists patriarchal norms and social hierarchies. This study recommends further studies of women's narratives that respect the complexity and diversity of women's life experiences.
