Abstract

Literature works often reflect the daily lives of people, including the dynamics of local politics. Literature, especially poetry, serves as a medium for writers to express aspirations and concern representing public unrest toward ongoing political conditions. The anthology geguritan Dugale Asu Maring Menungsa is one such literature work that successfully reveals the portrayal of local political landscape represented in the guritan works of Atmo Tan Sidik. This research is qualitative descriptive in nature, using Roland Barthes semiotic approach which consists of three types of coding: denotation, connotation, and myth. The study employs note-taking techniques to collect and map data. Data analysis using the Miles and Huberman model, which consists of three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and verification. The findings show that local political practices in Tegal, Central Java have experienced a distortion of values. The poetry shows that elections have lost their spirit of struggle and have turned into a spectacle of entertainment and material transaction.

Abstract

Traditional kethoprak performances often portray women as passive figures, but the play Rara Mendut-Pranacitra challenges this by presenting an active female protagonist. This study analyzes how the central character, Rara Mendut, demonstrates female agency by fighting for her desires and freedom against a patriarchal social structure. Using a qualitative, descriptive-analytical approach grounded in Anthony Giddens's theory of agency, the research examines specific dialogues and scenes from a performance available on the Balkam TV YouTube channel. The analysis reveals that Rara Mendut exhibits her agency through three key indicators: reflective agency (subtly rejecting marriage proposals), symbolic negotiation (using humor to challenge authority), and personal decision-making (gaining economic independence). Her ultimate act of agency is her radical choice to control her own destiny. The findings confirm that traditional performing arts can serve as a powerful medium for female resistance. This study demonstrates that female characters in Javanese narratives are not merely passive objects but active agents capable of shaping social structures from within, providing a valuable theoretical perspective beyond traditional feminist criticism.

Abstract

Seni pertunjukan ketoprak bagi masyarakat Jawa tidak hanya berfungsi sebagai hiburan, tetapi juga menjadi sarana penyampai gagasan dan nilai budaya. Salah satu gagasan dan nilai yang disampaikan melalui ketoprak adalah konsep kesatria Jawa. Konsep ini tidak disampaikan dalam sebuah uraian sistematis, melainkan disuguhkan secara implisit atau tersamar, sehingga diperlukan upaya pemahaman lebih lanjut dalam aktualisasinya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis aktualisasi diri kesatria Jawa yang direpresentasikan dalam lakon ketoprak Damarwulan Ngratu. Kesempurnaan diri kesatria Jawa dikaji dengan berangkat dari teori psikologi humanistik Abraham Maslow, khususnya hierarki kebutuhan bertingkat, mulai dari kebutuhan dasar hingga aktualisasi diri. Representasi kesatria Jawa dalam lakon tersebut sekaligus dibedah berdasarkan simbol dan tanda yang bersemayam pada teks lakon, sehingga digunakanlah model kajian semiotika John Fiske yang membagi pemaknaannya dalam tiga level, yakni realitas, representasi, dan ideologi. Penelitian menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode deskriptif. Data berupa ujaran, sikap, dan tindakan tokoh yang merepresentasikan kesatria Jawa yang bersumber dari pergelaran ketoprak Tri Manggolo Budoyo Lakon Damarwulan Ngratu. Data dihimpun dengan teknik simak dan catat. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa lewat tokoh utama bernama Damarwulan, konsepsi kesatria Jawa teraktualisasikan dengan terpenuhinya kelima syarat kesatria Jawa wisma, turangga, kukila, wanita, dan curiga. Aktualisasi tersebut mencakupi terpenuhinya kebutuhan fisiologis dan keselamatan (menjadi pekatik, ngenger di kepatihan), kebutuhan cinta dan memiliki (memiliki istri yang dicintai [Anjasmara], mendapatkan istri dari negeri yang ditaklukkan [Wahita dan Puyengan], serta mendapatkan permaisuri [Ratu Kencanawungu]), kebutuhan penghargaan (menjadi senapati Majapahit), dan aktualisasi diri (pemimpin majapahit). Penelitian ini merekomendasikan kajian lebih lanjut terhadap tokoh kesatria lain dalam seni tradisional untuk memperkaya pemahaman tentang psikologi budaya dalam konteks lokal.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to describe the personality of Karsana, the husband of a ketoprak actress in novel Tabon by Margareth Widhy Pratiwi, and the impact of Karsana’s psychological disturbance on his life. This study uses a qualitative approach with a literary psychology analysis method. The data source is the novel Tabon by Margareth Widhy Pratiwi. The data consists of dialogue excerpts between characters related to the husband of the ketoprak artist, as well as his dialogue with other characters and narrative sentences. The data was collected using heuristic reading techniques. The data were analyzed using the language style, point of view, and telling showing models. This study used Carl Gustav Jung's psychoanalysis theory. The results of the study show that Karsana has a personality with aspects of conscious attitude that tend to be introverted, personal unconscious, and collective unconscious in the form of shadow and persona. Regarding the impact of Karsana's psychological disturbance on his life, when he experiences conscious, Karsana is able to distinguish between right and wrong. Conversely, when he experiences personal unconscious, Karsana loses his rationality. Even when he experiences collective unconscious, Karsana no longer becomes his true self.Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan kepribadian Karsana yang merupakan suami seniwati ketoprak pada novel Tabon karya Margareth Widhy Partiwi dan dampak keguncangan jiwa Karsana atas kehidupannya. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode kajian psikologi sastra. Sumber data novel Tabon karya Margareth Widhy Pratiwi. Dengan data berupa kutipan dialog antartokoh yang berkaitan dengan tokoh suami seniwati ketoprak maupun dialog tokoh tersebut dengan tokoh lainnya dan kalimat kalimat naratif. Data dikumpulkan dengan teknik pembacaan heuristik dan dianalisis dengan model gaya bahasa, point of view, dan telling showing. Dalam penelitian ini digunakan teori psikoanalisis Carl Gustav Jung. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pada Karsana ditemukan kepribadian dengan aspek kesadaran sikap jiwa cenderung introvert, ketidaksadaran personal, serta ketidaksadaran kolektif dengan bentuk shadow dan persona. Adapun dampak keguncangan jiwa Karsana atas kehidupannya, saat mengalami kesadaran, Karsana mampu membedakan antara benar dan salah. Sebaliknya, saat mengalami ketidaksadaran personal, Karsana kehilangan rasionalitas. Bahkan saat mengalami ketidaksadaran kolektif, Karsana tidak menjadi dirinya sendiri.

Abstract

Pisuhan (swearing) has long been considered by most Javanese people to be a rude expression that is taboo or not good to say. However, in reality, pisuhan is still used in everyday conversations, such as pisuhan in the Woko Channel short film, pisuhan is definitely functional as a messenger. mpatan is not only used to express negative emotions in the form of harsh, dirty words or cruel expressions. Swearing is also used to express positive emotions as a form of greeting, praise, or used to familiarize each other when interacting. This research aims to reveal the constructions built by village communities through pisuhan. This study is a qualitative descriptive study. The data collection method used is observation combined with recording techniques. Data analytics techniques use pragmatic social data analysis techniques. The results of this study are 1) meaning and function of pisuhan; 2) the relationship between pishuhan and Javanese characteristics; 3) pishuhan has an impact on social relations in society.

Abstract

Children's dolanan songs are a form of traditional oral literature that grew and developed in the west coastal communities of Central Java, especially in Tegal Regency. However, along with the times, the existence of dolanan songs is increasingly rarely sung by children, both in the school and home environment, so that the positive values contained in it began to be neglected. This study aims to reveal the formula of joy and the spirit of optimism in dolanan songs for children on the west coast of Central Java through Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. The research method used is qualitative with the techniques of observation, recording, and content analysis of the lyrics of dolanan songs that are still sustainable in the community. The results show that the aesthetics of joy is reflected through simple lyrics, full of cheerfulness, and rhythms that invite children to move and interact socially. Meanwhile, the spirit of optimism can be seen in the moral messages that teach hope, enthusiasm, and togetherness in facing everyday life. Thus, dolanan songs not only function as entertainment, but also as a medium for character building and strengthening local cultural values amid the challenges of modernization.

Abstract

This study examines the construction of truth in the Kethoprak play "Saridin Andum Waris" performed by Bhakti Kuncoro Pati in 2022. Using a sociology of literature approach, we analyze how the play's storyline reflects substantive truth, exploring its relationship to procedural truth. Our data, comprising characters, plot, and settings, is examined in relation to the lived experiences of these elements in Javanese society. The analysis reveals that "Saridin Andum Waris" prioritizes substantive truth over procedural truth. This manifests in the play's conflicts, which arise and unfold due to irrationalities and emotional motivations rather than through legal or logical sequences. This suggests the play engages with deeper societal truths beyond surface-level legal or factual accuracy. By exploring the play's construction of truth, this study offers new insights into Kethoprak's role in reflecting and critiquing Javanese society. It also highlights the potential of dramatic works to delve into nuanced and subjective understandings of truth beyond established legal or rational frameworks.

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini mengungkap dialektika kuasa dan etika Jawa dalam wayang lakon Parikesit Jumeneng Ratu. Analisis didasarkan pada semiotika Charles Sanders Pierce yang terdiri atas tahap representamen, object (ikon, indeks, simbol), dan intrepretant. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode deskriptif. Sumber datanya pergelaran wayang lakon Parikesit Jumeneng Ratu oleh Ki Enthus Susmono. Pengumpulan data dengan teknik simak catat. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dalam lakon Parikesit Jumeneng Ratu, kuasa dilegitimasikan berdasarkan keturunan. Keturunan yang dimaksud semestinya berurutan, artinya dimulai dari keturunan tertua. Namun, jika legitimasi kekuasaan seseorang rendah karena bukan keturunan tertua, legitimasi tersebut bisa diperkuat oleh wahyu. Parikesit dalam lakon tersebut bisa memimpin Astina meskipun bukan keturunan tertua Pandawa. Itu karena legitimasi kekuasaannya diperkuat oleh kehadiran Wahyu Cakra Ningrat. Adapun prinsip etika Jawa, terutama rukun, hormat, dan tepa salira, berperan penting dalam menegakkan kekuasaan. Meskipun konflik selalu mewarnai penegakan kekuasaan, etika Jawa tetap menjadi pedoman perilaku bagi tokoh-tokoh yang terlibat. Itu menunjukkan bahwa kuasa dan etika Jawa berjalan beriringan.

Abstract

Abstrak. Mayoritas warga Desa Candisari, Kecamatan Windusari, Kabupaten Magelang, Jawa Tengah, tidak melanjutkan pendidikan setelah menyelesaikan pendidikan sekolah dasar Hal ini menjadi salah satu penyebab rendahnya budaya literasi dan pemahaman mereka terhadap berbagai aspek yang berkaitan dengan kehidupan masyarakat, sehingga diperlukan upaya untuk meningkatkan budaya literasi. Salah satunya lewat pengadaan perpustakaan desa. Hasil observasi menunjukkan bahwa sarana dan prasarana Perpustakaan Desa Candisari masih terbatas. Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan perpustakaan di Desa Candisari untuk meningkatkan budaya literasi masyarakat setempat. Tahapan pengabdian ini adalah observasi, koordinasi, pelaksanaan kegiatan, dan penginformasian atau sosialisasi. Hasil kegiatan ini berupa tercapainya penambahan koleksi bahan bacaan, klasifikasi bahan bacaan, pemberian label identitas pada bahan bacaan, penataan, dan pengategorian bahan buku. Lewat kegiatan ini, diharapkan budaya literasi warga masyarakat Candisari meningkat.Abstract. The majority of residents of Candisari Village, Windusari District, Magelang Regency, Central Java, do not continue their education after completing elementary school. This is one of the causes of low literacy culture and their understanding of various aspects related to community life, so efforts are needed to improve literacy culture. . One of them is through the provision of a village library. The observation results show that the facilities and infrastructure of the Candisari Village Library are still limited. This community service activity aims to develop a library in Candisari Village to improve the literacy culture of the local community. The stages of this service are observation, coordination, implementation of activities, and information or socialization. The results of this activity are the achievement of increasing the collection of reading materials, classifying reading materials, giving identity labels to reading materials, arranging and categorizing book materials. Abstract

Wayang kulit not only functions as entertainment, but is also a vehicle for conveying philosophical messages. As in the Cupu Manik Astagina puppet play, there is a philosophical message in the form of "sapa nandur ngundhuh" or whoever plants will reap. Therefore, this study aims to explore the philosophical message of "sapa nandur ngundhuh" in the Cupu Manik Astagina puppet play by Ki Enthus Susmono by representing it so that the message can be conveyed. This qualitative research uses Stuart Hall's representation theory through Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis model, namely symbolic code and action code. The data source is a video of a shadow puppet performance entitled "Pakeliran Solid Wayang Kulit Lakon Cupu Manik Astagina by Ki Enthus Susmono" on YouTube Aa Studio. The listening-note taking technique is used to collect data in the form of words and utterances obtained from ginem and janturan in the story. It is known through the symbol code and action code. The results showed that the concept of "sapa nandur ngundhuh" in the Cupu Manik Astagina puppet play does not only apply to the karma themselves, but can affect other people, including their descendants. In the story of Dewi Windradi, her actions have consequences not only for herself, but also her three children. This research also highlights how karma can be prevented from continuing to reap through some tirakat practices. Such as fasting (ngrowot), meditation and asceticism (tapa brata) which aim to cleanse themselves of past sins and minimize negative karma in the future.
