Abstract

This study aims to describe students' intuition in solving mathematical analogy problems, which is an essential aspect of analogical reasoning in 21st-century education. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The population in this study was high school students from East Java, with the research subjects comprising students from SMAN 1 Ngoro Mojokerto and SMA Katolik St. Albertus Malang. A total of 31 students participated as samples. Data were collected using an analogy problem related to the system of equations with three variables and a validated interview guideline. The data were analyzed qualitatively by categorizing student responses and identifying intuition characteristics. The results showed that 16 out of 31 students used intuition in solving analogy problems. Their intuition was classified into two main categories: (1) catalytic inference and common sense, shown by 3 students who gave quick and concise answers using prior knowledge, and (2) the power of synthesis and common sense, found in 13 students who gave more elaborate answers based on their understanding and experience. The findings highlight the significant role of intuition in mathematical learning and suggest the need for instructional strategies that support intuitive reasoning.

Abstract

When students solve an algebra problem, students try to deduce the facts in the problem. This step is imperative, students can draw conclusions from the facts and devise a plan to solve the problem. Drawing conclusions from facts is called reasoning. Some kinds of reasoning are deductive, inductive, and abductive. This article explores the characteristics of some types of abductive reasoning used by mathematics education students in problem-solving related to using facts on the problems. Fifty-eight students were asked to solve an algebra problem. It was found that the student’s solutions could be grouped into four types of abductive reasoning. From each group, one student was interviewed to have more details on the types. First, the creative conjectures type, the students can solve the problems and develop new ideas related to the problems; second, fact optimization type, the students make conjecture of the answer, then confirm it by deductive reasoning; third, factual error type, students use facts outside of the problems to solve it, but the facts are wrong; and fourth, mistaken fact type, the students assume the questionable thing as a given fact. Therefore, teachers should encourage the students to use creative conjectures and fact optimization when learning mathematics.

Abstract

Mathematical reasoning is an essential competency assessed in the Asesmen Kompetensi Minimum (AKM) and PISA because it supports students in understanding and solving problems. However, studies have shown that Indonesian students’ mathematical reasoning ability is not optimal. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach using a phenomenological framework to describe the mathematical reasoning abilities of grade VIII students in solving AKM problems related to number patterns, similar to those found in PISA, with data analysis conducted using Miles and Huberman's method. The research instruments were researchers, AKM problems of number patterns similar to PISA, and interview guidelines. Subjects were taken from each level of reasoning ability, namely the extending, consolidating, developing, beginning, and not evident levels. The results showed that students at the extended level can connect number patterns with the area of flat shapes, write patterns, use two methods, create new ideas, and show generalizations. Consolidating students are able to connect number patterns with the area of flat shapes, to write properties, to find differences in patterns, to conclude, to use two methods, and to show examples of counterexamples of conjectures. Developing students can expand patterns, convert images, prove conjectures, and identify differences in patterns, but are not yet able to draw conclusions. Beginning students cannot write conjectures and patterns, make errors in writing, using, and converting units, and perform calculations. Students at the not evident level cannot convert images, are not aware of the relationship between number patterns and the area of flat shapes, as well as rows and columns, and cannot make conjectures about number patterns.

Abstract

In the subject of Natural Sciences, PjBL offers the ability to enhance students' understanding of concepts and scientific skills through practical exploration activities. However, in its implementation, the PjBL model also faces several challenges. Some of these include difficulties in integrating a dense curriculum with project-based learning approaches, resource limitations, and challenges in assessing students' achievements comprehensively. In an effort to address these challenges, an innovative learning approach emerged, namely Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL). The aim of this research is to analyze the TaRL approach within the PjBL model in the science subject, focusing on how the combination of these two methodologies can enhance student engagement and motivation. This research method employs descriptive research using a qualitative approach. Data collection techniques in this study include observation and documentation. The research instruments used in this study include observation and document analysis. The results of applying this approach have been proven to increase student engagement in learning, as it provides opportunities for them to learn independently and collaborate on challenging projects. Although it has not fully enhanced students' intrinsic motivation towards learning science.
