Abstract

Eyeshadow is used to give the eye dimension to look attractive, so the selection of eyeshadow materials needs to be considered to avoid side effects that can occur on the surface of the eyelids. Eyeshadow can be made from natural ingredients. One of the natural ingredients that can replace talcum chemicals is chicken eggshell powder because chicken eggshell powder contains a source of calcium that can nourish the skin. Rosella flower petal powder extract is also added as a natural colourant for manufacturing this compact eyeshadow powder. In addition to functioning as a colourant, Rosella flower petals contain anthocyanins and flavonoids, which have antioxidant and antibacterial properties. This study aims to determine the innovation process of chicken eggshell waste into Compact Powder Eyeshadow as decorative cosmetics by analyzing the feasibility of eyeshadow through organoleptic tests, pH tests, particle uniformity tests, specific gravity tests, and water content tests. This study's results show that formula III's physical quality with an extract concentration of 50% has good physical quality compared to other concentrations because the resulting colour is light. However, the colour resistance produced is the same as other formulas and does not last long.

Abstract

Air pollution level in Indonesia can cause oxidative stress which can impact the antioxidant defenses of the skin so it can trigger premature aging problems. Skin protection should focus on the application of topical antioxidants which include flavonoids as antioxidants. Furthermore, corn silk containing flavonoids has the potential to be used as a topical preparation in the form of a sheet mask as an antioxidant in preventing premature aging. Corn silk which is processed using the fermentation method becomes an eco-enzyme since it can act as a good catalyst and produce antioxidants. The aim of this research is to analyze the feasibility of eco-enzyme as an essence in sheet mask preparations with antioxidant content which meets the preparation evaluation requirements. The method used in this research consisted of making corn silk eco-enzyme which was homogenized with other chemicals to become an essence sheet mask and packaged by using paper sheets in foil bags. The research results show that preparations with eco-enzyme concentrations in each formula, namely 10% (F1), 20% (F2), and 30% (F3), have good physical evaluations and met test standards which included organoleptic, pH, homogeneity, spreadability, adhesion, and stability tests. Moreover, the antioxidant activity test shows the IC50 values for each formula are 190.67 µg/mL, 185 µg/mL, and 96.75 µg/mL, respectively. The conclusion is that the F3 with a concentration of 30%, shows the best antioxidant activity, having an IC50 value of 96.75 µg/mL, which is classified as strong. In addition, the results of this research prove that the eco-enzyme from corn silk is suitable for use in preparing essence sheet masks with antioxidant content.

Abstract

Free radicals are a major cause of skin damage that can accelerate premature aging; therefore, the use of antioxidants, particularly from natural sources such as papaya leaves (Carica papaya L.), is essential due to their flavonoid, tannin, and polyphenol content. The application of antioxidants in a face mist formulation is considered practical as it is easy to use and provides a refreshing effect on the skin. This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant activity of a face mist containing California papaya leaf extract using the DPPH method and to assess its physical characteristics. A quantitative experimental method with a post-test only design was employed using two formulations with different extract concentrations. The results showed that the IC₅₀ values of Formula I and Formula II were 2475.23 ppm and 812.14 ppm, respectively, indicating very weak antioxidant activity, although Formula II exhibited better performance. Physical evaluation revealed that both formulations were organoleptically stable and homogeneous; however, the pH values were below the acceptable skin range and the viscosity of Formula II was relatively high. In conclusion, the formulation demonstrates potential as a natural antioxidant product, but further optimization is required to improve its effectiveness and quality.

Abstract

Acne (Acne vulgaris) is a skin problem often caused by Propionibacterium acnes bacterial infection. Guava leaves (Psidium guajava L.) contain antibacterial compounds, but their use as facial cleansing cosmetic preparations in the form of micellar water has not been widely done. This experimental study aims to determine the feasibility of guava leaf extract micellar water preparations in inhibiting the growth of Propionibacterium acnes. The preparations were formulated into two variations of extract concentration, namely F1 (50%) and F2 (100%). The evaluation stage of the preparations included organoleptic tests, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, and antibacterial activity testing using the well method. The results of physical tests showed that both formulas were liquid in texture, dark brown in color, and had a distinctive odor of guava leaves. However, the preparations were proven to be inhomogeneous due to the presence of particle deposits. The average pH value of the preparations was classified as acidic and was below the physiological standard of the skin (<4.5) which was 3.05 for F1 and 3.19 for F2. Antibacterial testing showed weak inhibition (<5 mm), with an average F1 inhibition zone of 0.961 ± 0.0300 mm and F2 of 1.142 ± 0.0226 mm. One-way ANOVA analysis showed a statistically significant difference between the treatment groups (p<0.05). However, the preparation was not yet clinically effective, thus concluding that guava leaf extract micellar water is not yet suitable for optimal application due to the physical instability triggered by the high extract concentration and its inadequate ability to penetrate the complex cell wall of Propionibacterium acnes. Further research is needed to optimize the formulation of this preparation.
