Abstract

Background: Leaves are a plant that is widely used and widely cultivated throughout Indonesia, and has the potential as a traditional medicinal plant that is beneficial for the health of the body. Bangun-bangun leaves have been investigated and are known to contain compounds that are thought to have antibacterial activity, namely flavonoids, and tannins. The bacteria used to test the antibacterial ability of the leaves was Propionibacterium acnes. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity of the ethanolic extract of the leaves of Bangun-bangun against Propionibacterium acnes bacteria. Method: The process of making extracts of the leaves of Bangun-bangun using the maceration method with 96% ethanol as a solvent. The macerate was evaporated until a thick extract of the leaves was obtained. The simplicial powder was characterized and screened for phytochemicals. The concentration treatment groups used were 1%, 2%, and 3%. The test was carried out by the agar diffusion method against the test bacteria using a paper backer, the results were observed in the form of a zone of inhibition and the value of the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) was determined. Results: Results Characterization of simplicial powder, including water content, water-soluble extract content, ethanol soluble extract content, total ash content, and acid insoluble ash content were as follows: 7.99%, 24,24%, 24,02%,5,82,%, and 1.24%. The results of the screening of Simplicial powder were positive for containing alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, saponins, tannins, and steroids/triterpenoids. The results showed that the ethanol extract of the leaves of Bangun-bangun had an antibacterial activity with the MIC value of the ethanolic extract of the leaves of Bangun-bangun against Propionibacterium acnes at concentrations of 1%, 2%, and 3%, respectively. Conclusion: The ethanolic extract of the leaves of Bangun-bangun has very strong activity as an antibacterial.

Abstract

Vitamin C is found in many fruits and vegetables, one of which is chilies and peppers. Paprika is thought to have the highest vitamin C content among other types of chili. This study aimed to determine vitamin C levels in green bell peppers (Capsicum annuum L. Var. Grossum) which grew around Mount Sinabung exposed to eruptions and green peppers that grew. far from Mount Sinabung which was not affected by the eruption Compared with the literature the content of vitamin C in fresh green bell peppers is 120 mg/100 g. The method used was an iodometric quantitative analysis method to determine vitamin C levels. The standard solution used was sodium thiosulfate 0 solution. .1 N and the titer solution used was 0.1 N iodine solution. The results of the determination of vitamin C levels in green peppers growing around Mount Sinabung which were affected by the eruption using quantitative analysis methods obtained levels of 104.67 mg/100 g and Green peppers growing far from Mount Sinabung that were not affected by the eruption were found to be 113.71 m g/100 g. The results of the study concluded that both samples experienced a decrease, from the original vitamin C content of fresh green peppers, which was 120 mg/100 g. This is caused by exposure to volcanic ash and hot steam generated by Mount Sinabung.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Aphasia is a major post-stroke complication that causes communication difficulties and significantly reduces patients’ quality of life. Conventional speech therapy is often limited by time and resources, highlighting the need for technology-based alternatives that can be practiced independently at home. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a symbolic communication therapy (SCT) application in improving communication skills among stroke patients with aphasia. Methods: A one-group pretest–posttest quasi-experimental design was used with 15 motor-aphasia patients recruited from the Neurology Ward of Haji Medan General Hospital. Participants used an Android-based SCT application for six weeks (two 30-minute sessions per day). Functional communication ability was assessed using the Derby Functional Communication Scale (DFCS) before and after intervention. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test. Results: The SCT application significantly improved patients’ communication performance. DFCS scores increased in expression (5.93 to 6.93), comprehension (5.47 to 7.93), and interaction (4.93 to 6.93) domains (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The SCT application effectively enhances functional communication in post-stroke aphasia patients and can serve as a complementary, low-cost tool within neurological rehabilitation programs, particularly in resource-limited healthcare settings.
