Abstract

The research is titled “Directives Speech Act in The Hunger Games Movie” The research aimed to find out and classify the types of directive speech acts used in The Hunger Games Movie and explain the linguistic form of each type of directive speech act based on the contexts. The method applied was the descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research were in the form of words and sentences that contain directive speech acts. The technique of collecting data was conducted by collecting the data from The Hunger Games movie, classifying types of directive speech act, and describing the form of each type of directive speech act. Furthermore, the technique of data analysis was based on Kreidler's (1998) classification of directive speech acts. The types are commands, requests, and suggestions. The next step was explaining the form of each type of directive speech acts based on the pragmatic contexts. The findings of this study showed that request interrogative is the most dominant type of directive used with a total number 117 utterances or 32,47% in percentage.Keywords: Pragmatic, Speech Act, Directive speech act

Abstract

Frightening expressions are the ones causing fear. Fear in any narrative story is very important. Accordingly, this research was aimed at analyzing the type of translation techniques and translation ideology on frightening expressions in Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories. This research applied Molina & Albir’s (2002) theory of translation technique. The theories of translation ideology by Venutti (2000) and Hoed’s (2003) were employed in this research as well. This research was qualitative descriptive. The data collection technique was document analysis. It is conducted by analyzing the frightening expressions in two original short stories entitled The Black Cat and The Fall of The House of Usher and their Indonesian translation entitled Kucing Hitam and Misteri Rumah Keluarga Usher. The result was that there were fourteen out of twenty-four types of translation techniques. This included Discursive Creation, Established Equivalence, Deletion, Generalization, Modulation, Addition, Explicitation, Paraphrase, Particularization, Adaptation, Concision, Description, Transposition, and Compensation. The dominant type of translation technique is Establish Equivalence. The most dominant translation techniques in The Black Cat were established equivalence while the most dominant techniques in The Fall of the House of Usher were discursive creation. Both the translations of frightening expressions in The Black Cat and The Fall of the House of Usher grasped domestication ideology.

Abstract

The act of naming someone is not merely an act of giving someone’s name to call. It is an act of giving someone a remarkable notion that will be a reminder of what, where, or when someone was born. Besides, giving name is also an act of wishing and praying so the kids will be whatever their names are. Considering the wishes and hopes behind the act of naming, the researcher finds it interesting to analyze how parents’ give names to their children and what kind of wishes they implicitly asked for in those names.  This study will use the semantic theory of meaning and the theory of character education. The data of the research are the 112 names of Widya Mandala Surabaya Catholic University Madiun Campus’ students. Those names are retrieved from Student Academic Biro of the University. The analysis shows that there are 5 character educational values found in those names.

Abstract

The phenomenon of code-switching occurs in people's speech both through conversation and text. One of them is found in a YouTube video. This study aims to analyze the types and functions of code-switching found in the utterances of host and guest stars in Boy William's YouTube video entitled "Episode 1: Livy dan Vior Ribut Besar". In conducting this research, the methodology chosen is a qualitative descriptive method that analyzes the type and function of code-switching by watching the video multiple times, taking notes, and classifying the types and functions of code-switching. The theory used in this research was proposed by Poplack (1980) to analyze the different types of code-switching. While the theory proposed by Apple & Muysken (2005) is used to analyze the function of code-switching. The results showed that there were 3 types of code-switching found in the host and guest star's conversations in the video. The types of code-switching consist of tag switching, intra-sentential switching, and inter-sentential switching. All types of code-switching found amounted to 144 data with intra-sentence switching being the most dominant type with 121 data, and the least dominant type is tag switching with only 6 data. In this study, there are five functions of code-switching. The most dominant function is the referential function with 48 data and the least dominant function is a directive function with only 1 data.

Abstract

Song translations are different from other translation materials. It not only requires the translator to translate the meaning or intention, but also to adjust to the original tone, rhythm, and intonation. Those requirements are principle especially when the translated song is meant to be sung. A translator often adds or deletes some parts of the lyrics to fit the translated lyric to the tone, rhythm, and intonation. Eighteen translation techniques have been proposed by Molina & Albir (2002). Two of them are amplification and reduction. Amplification includes explicitation, addition, and paraphrase. Reduction includes reduction, implicitation, and deletion. This research aims at analyze how amplification and reduction techniques are applied and influence the singability of GMS Live songs. This research uses the translation technique theory proposed by Molina & Albir (2002). To analyze the singability, the theory of singability proposed by Franzon (2008) is used. This research uses qualitative document analysis through the descriptive approach. It analyzes the data in song lyrics using amplification and reduction techniques. The source of data are five GMS Live songs translated from Bahasa Indonesia to English: Yang Termulia (Glorious God), Dahsyat (So Great), Perkasa (Mighty God), Berkenan BagiMu (Purify Me), and Melodi (Melody). The data analysis result shows that amplification-addition is the dominant technique in this song translation. The techniques chosen actively affected the singability of the song. It is proven by the data analysis result which shows that 80% of the translated lyrics have high level of prosodic match.

Abstract

This research investigates the application of Gottlieb’s (1992) subtitling strategies in the Indonesian subtitles of the first episode of the Wednesday series. The study aims to identify which of the ten proposed strategies—expansion, paraphrase, transfer, imitation, transcription, dislocation, condensation, decimation, deletion, and resignation—are utilized and how frequently they appear. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the researcher analyzed 40 subtitle data points and found that eight out of ten strategies were employed. The most dominant was the transfer strategy (10 instances), indicating a preference for literal translation that maintains the original meaning without alteration. Paraphrase (8 instances) and condensation (7 instances) followed, suggesting the translator's effort to adapt the content for better cultural accessibility and readability. Expansion (5 instances) and transcription (4 instances) were also used to clarify cultural references and preserve speaker identity. Meanwhile, decimation (3), deletion (2), and resignation (1) were applied less frequently due to translation challenges or irrelevance. Imitation and dislocation were not observed in the data. Overall, the study concludes that the subtitling of Wednesday reflects a balanced approach between faithfulness to the source text and pragmatic adaptation, adhering to the norms and constraints of audiovisual translation.
