Abstract

This study examines the implementation of political ethics in the management of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) in North Sumatra. It focuses on decision-making, cadre formation, political campaigns, discipline enforcement, and the impact of political ethics on public perception and party performance. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the study incorporates in-depth interviews with PDIP cadres, students, and community members, along with document analysis of internal policies. Findings reveal that PDIP North Sumatra has integrated political ethics through transparency, moral-based cadre training, and ethical campaigning. However, challenges remain, including external political pressure, a pragmatic local political culture, and internal resistance to change. Despite these obstacles, consistent adherence to political ethics has enhanced the party’s image, strengthened public trust, and improved its political standing. The study concludes that successful political ethics implementation depends on leadership, organizational culture, and external political dynamics. Recommendations include strengthening internal oversight, enhancing political education for cadres, and collaborating with independent institutions to ensure ethical governance. This research contributes to understanding how political ethics shape local party dynamics and democratic development in Indonesia.

Abstract

The development of digital technology has significantly transformed the political landscape, particularly with the rise of social media as the primary platform for political interaction among the millennial generation. As a generation that grew up in the digital era, millennials tend to be more active in accessing, sharing, and discussing political issues through social media compared to conventional methods. This study aims to analyze how social media shapes millennials’ political perceptions and engagement while highlighting challenges such as the spread of hoaxes, opinion polarization, and low digital literacy. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this research examines the patterns of political information consumption on social media and its impact on millennial political participation. The findings indicate that social media serves as a key tool in raising political awareness and mobilizing political support, but it also acts as a channel for misinformation, potentially influencing public political perceptions. Therefore, enhancing digital literacy is essential to ensure that millennials’ political participation is based on accurate and credible information. By understanding this digital political dynamic, this study is expected to provide insights for policymakers in designing more effective and inclusive political communication strategies for the millennial generation.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze in-depth the use of rhetorical persuasion by political actors in the Indonesian political arena and the role of this rhetoric in shaping public opinion amidst a fragmented media landscape and intensifying political polarization. Backgrounded by the dynamic political competition and the transformative digital media landscape, this study identifies gaps in previous research, particularly concerning the unique Indonesian political context and the influence of social media on the effectiveness of rhetoric. Employing a qualitative approach with a descriptive analysis design, data were collected through document analysis, including transcripts of political speeches, social media posts of politicians (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook), online news and opinion articles, and political campaign materials. Data analysis was conducted through content analysis, discourse analysis, and interpretation, grounded in Aristotle's classical rhetoric theory, Entman's framing theory, McCombs and Shaw's agenda-setting theory, and Tajfel and Turner's social identity theory. Triangulation techniques were used to ensure the validity and reliability of the findings. The research results indicate that Indonesian political actors strategically employ a variety of rhetorical techniques encompassing ethos, pathos, and logos, as well as utilizing issue framing, agenda-setting through social media, and social identity mobilization to influence public opinion. The exploitation of echo chambers and social media algorithms was identified as a factor that amplifies rhetorical messages and deepens polarization. This study concludes that the art of rhetorical persuasion plays a crucial role in shaping public opinion in Indonesia, especially within the context of digital media and political polarization, and provides theoretical and practical insights into the dynamics of contemporary political communication.

Abstract

This study analyzed the factors influencing the political preferences of Generation Z (Gen-Z) voters in the 2024 Regent Election (Pilkada) of Southeast Aceh. Employing a qualitative approach through an intrinsic case study, the research explored the subjective experiences and socio-political dynamics of Gen-Z in shaping their political choices. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and digital documentation involving 30 respondents selected through purposive sampling. The findings revealed that Gen-Z’s political preferences were shaped by issue-based rationality, candidate capability, and perceptions of personal branding and leadership integrity. Social media platforms—particularly TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube—emerged as the primary channels for political socialization, while local figures such as teachers and religious leaders (ustadz) continued to hold influence within limited social contexts. Challenges to participation included low levels of political literacy, the spread of misinformation, and limited internet access in rural areas. Nonetheless, Gen-Z demonstrated active, selective, and critical engagement with political messages. This study affirmed the relevance of rational choice theory and cognitive domains in explaining young voter behavior and recommended campaign strategies that were educational, value-based, and inclusive of digital generation voices.

Abstract

This study analyzes the formation of political preferences among Muslim women in North Sumatra during the 2024 General Election, focusing on the dynamic intersection of religion, culture, and social networks. Drawing on data from 152 respondents collected through online surveys and in-depth interviews, the study finds that culture, particularly through family norms, domestic responsibilities, and spousal influence, emerges as the most dominant factor (93.4%) in shaping electoral decisions. Religion (77.6%) functions as a source of moral legitimation but is often actualized within cultural contexts and channeled through social networks. Social networks (42.1%) act as conduits for political narratives, primarily via social media and religious figures. This research challenges the simple dichotomy between agency and structure, demonstrating that women’s political autonomy does not always equate to individual independence but often manifests as a form of reflective obedience—wherein choices are forged through a negotiation between religious values, familial demands, and personal aspirations. These findings indicate that women are not merely passive recipients of influence but actively interpret and assign meaning to their political choices. To enhance women’s substantive participation, empowerment strategies must be holistic, addressing the transformation of family norms, the reinforcement of an inclusive religious identity, and the strengthening of social capacity. Consequently, the domestic sphere can be transformed from a restrictive space into a political power base for Muslim women.
